I'm a huge fan of the Shrek movies... I love many animated films but Shrek is so cute and touching and also has wonderful music! I recently came across a version of "Hallelujah" that I think is beautiful. I love this piece of music and I think these young men perform a super version of it:

Kurt Nilsen from World Idol is one of the singers.
I thought I'd share it (if you haven't already heard this one) and also ask if others pay much attention to the music used in animated movies... do you notice it? Does it impact on the overall story for you? Or is just in the background and you're more caught up in the dialogue? I love music so I always seem to notice it and how it fits into the overall theme.

my favourite versions are the original, by Leonard Cohen, and the cover by Jeff Buckley.
they are like two completely different songs. the original is very broken. almost morbid. really bitter, but quite defensive. maybe even a bit spiteful.
the cover has a more melodic feel, but holds a bit of that bitterness to it.

I totally agree with you, Galena... I had been softened by listening to the cover version performed by the four Norwegian singers. Lind's guitar is so mellow and almost entrancing. When I played Cohen's version, I was caught by the sharp difference. I couldn't come to a good description but you have -- morbid, bitter -- excellent terms for how I perceived it. I'm not saying I didn't appreciate the quality of Cohen's version, either. He's so worthy of respect for his talent. I did pull up Jeff Buckley's version on youtube last night but got interrupted before I could listen to it. I think I'll go have a listen now... thanks for the reminder! :)

I do pay attention to music in the movies, especially with a movie like Shrek that uses so many different songs. I really like Hallelujah. It took a bit of searching to find the version that's in the movie, which is by John Cale. I've heard others do it but I like his the best. Every time it comes on, I have to listen to it several times before I'm finally able to move on to the next song.

Yep there are definitely a lot of version of Hallelujah. Rufus Wainwright's version is very popular and I tried listening to Leonard Cohen's version last night. I did NOT like it. I watched a few Cohen videos on youtube and ... just... no. LOL I really adore that guitar version that I posted - I think it's the purity and clarity of the vocals that gets me. Thanks for giving the information on John Cale, too, Reesers! You've probably saved some people a lot of search time

I don't really notice background music. I get so caught up in the storyline of things, I don't pay attention to anything around me. Just like when I'm reading a book.

Sometimes, I'm very aware of the music and other times not... I think I pay even more attention if it strikes a familiar chord and I'm trying to figure out if I've heard it before LOL Books are an entirely different matter for me too... I have to carefully consider when I'm going to start reading because I will see nor hear anything else until I've read the book from cover to cover. I'm not good at being able to put it down and pick it back up multiple times.
