There have been some times in the past where I would use regular detergent along with softener. I would sometimes notice mysterious spots on clothing. Has this ever happened to you when using a certain softener or detergent?

hi bamakelly!
well, i am not really sure. what i notice though is that when we steep the clothes in water with soap for quite some time in order to soften tough dirt, some of the colors mess with the other fabrics to cause stain. but with softener or detergent, na, i have not noticed that.
maybe your softener or detergent has bleach and you used it on colored fabrics?
take care and God bless you!
happy mylotting! :D

Yes, if liquid softener directly touches the clothing it can sometimes cause it to discolor, always make the the liquid softener goes in to the water and not directly on to the clothing. Also spots can show up on stuff because you may have spattered bleach on or in the washer with out realizing and gets on the clothes. A good way to make sure this never happens is after you do whites using bleach, do a load of towels immediately after. Take one of the towels that is not in great shape and wipe off the washer. That way if anything is going to get bleach spots it will be a towel and not any of your clothing. Since nobody sees most of your towels if there is a little bleach spot nobody is going to care. Of course if you have good towels you use for company you would not want to wash those right after doing a load with bleach in it.
