I see them as extremely large directional transmitters and receivers in outter space, operating as huge communication towers in the sky. My preception is totally over-simplified but, bottomline, they are just global communication tools that can be adapted to many different purposes. Life without them would isolate the globe.

Hello Lindery and welcome to myLot. Satellites are used for communications. with it we can make phone calls to many different countries with out having telephone wires criss crossing the world. We can get 100s of Televisions stations for entertainment to satisfy every one. With the satellites scientist can find out what is going on in the oceans. They are used to analyze wave patterns, monitor marine surface life, analyze ocean tendencies. They are used to predict the weather patterns so we know what to expect each day. They have been used to track oil spills, to Monitor Deforestation, Urban Expansion, can be used for search and rescue missions and a wide range of other tasks. They are also used to track the migratory paths of birds and other animals. wow I'm glad you ask that question. I hadn't realized how important they have become in recent years.
