Do you pick up pennies?

I think it is great that you have passed it along to your children. Of course, most people probably do let their kids pick up the coins instead of themselves when they are with their children. I know my brother will always point it out to the kids and then tell them to pick it up and they will have good luck. He has a little rhyme that he says along with it.

I not only pick pennies up if I see them, but I say as I'm picking them up.."find a penny, pick it up, all the day you'll have good luck". I will also pick up other random coins too and paper money, if I'm that lucky to see such a site.:)

My kids are embarrassed by me picking up coins off the street... especially those I find in the McDonald's parking lot. Every penny counts; it adds up.

Oh my goodness, I cannot believe your children are embarrassed because you pick up money. Do they think everything in life is free? Are they still too young to realize that you have to have money to buy things?

I used to love finding money when I was a kid. I am sure I would not have been embarrassed if my mother would have been finding money and putting it in her pocket. That is really surprising to hear. Kind of sad. Just makes you wonder what the world is going to be like 30 years from now. Scary.

I used to walk around and pick up cans when I was a kid. I didn't have a way to take them to the recycling center, so my brother would buy them off of me. I'm not sure, but he was probably profiting. Otherwise, he probably would have just let me go along and cash mine in separate. He is still a trade and bartering. And he usually comes out ahead. LOL

It's great that you are teaching your kids this financial responsibility at such a young age. I think that is great!

I have stopped my vehicle and hopped out and picked up a beer bottle I saw lying on the ground. We don't get money here for cans but we do for beer cans & bottles, and wine bottles. Besides, it's helping clean up the environment!

Thanks Patgalca, you are not only picking up a nickel or a dime there with that bottle, but like you say you are helping to clean up the environment. It's kind of like killing two birds with one stone, as the old saying goes.

I know sometimes in the cold weather they can get stuck to the ground, and with gloves on sometimes it is impossible to free them. Maybe they will still be there the next time you walk through that way.

I know it has been colder this year than in about 24 years I think, throughout most of the United States. This winter has made me want to hibernate. LOL

Money is money to me too. In my opinion, the little things that we do in between jobs, here on line like at myLot is much like picking up pennies. I pick up all of the pennies I can.

I remember a time when a friend of mine was cleaning out her car and forgot the change on the hood. Then after she moved it, I walked up and found all of this change. I walked in and said, hey look at all of this change I found. Turned out I had to give it to her. LOL

That is so incredibly scary. Now I am going to be extra cautious when I am crossing the road, and extremely cautious when thinking about bending over to pick up a penny.

Your avatar looks like a auto sales facility. I just saw that, I'm going to have to check that out after I finish typing this response. I used to sell used cars, that's why it caught my curiosity.

That was the best picture to represent what I like to do. If I could have found one with trucks that would have been on there instead. I should have been a truck salesman. I can tell you all about the trucks on our one car lot in our town. I used to take my dog and go look at them every Sunday when I wouldn't be bothered. I still go some but it isn't as much fun without my dog as company. My wife doesn't like doing that. She will only window shop if she plans on really buying something.

That's so great. I am still cracking up laughing about that picture. And now with the explanation it makes it even funnier. I'm kind of into cars and trucks myself. Seems like I know more about them (especially GM products) than the men that I know.

All your comments are highly surprising. I have always been taught as a child NEVER to pick up pennies or type of money for that matter. It is almost a cultural thing as everybody i know does not encourage kids to pick coins or notes. It is believed that if you pick up coins you can turn into an animal. So you click your heels past the coins. Asides from that, I dont pick the coins cos I believe that someone else needs it more than I do. Yeah?

That is a cultural thing I have never heard of. Does that mean that if you accidentally drop some money on the ground you are forbidden to pick it up? If no one picks up money that has been dropped on the ground your streets must be rolling in cash.

Yes, I could never figure out how people think that finding money is a bad thing. LOL I figure the more money I can put in my pocket, the better off I am in life.

I want to start saving as much as I can right now and try to buy some stock. I think this is the perfect time to buy because it can only go up from here! And they have programs where all you need is $100. I figure that's pretty cheap, even if I can only afford to buy $100 worth in the long run it will go up!

That's the expression I was trying to think of. My brother says that all of the time. If his kids are with us, he will point out the money if they don't spot it and then he'll say that as they are picking it up.

He has such a great sense of humor, the way he says it just makes every one in a good mood for the day whether they are the one who found the money or not.

I used to never spend my change. I would always put it in this jar and save it until it was either full, or too heavy for me to carry anymore. Then I would take it to the bank. I would have to go two towns over, because our local branches didn't have a change machine (which I worked there so it wasn't far out of the way). But once I made it to the bank, I usually had about $125 worth of change in that jar every time.

About the same time of year, I would usually take in my aluminum cans and get about $45 for them. Although, the last time the aluminum was really up, and I got something like $72 for those. That's a lot of money for trash. LOL

Good for her, your daughter is starting out the money collection early I see. That's a good thing. I remember once when I was a kid getting left behind at the store because I stopped on the way out to check all of the machines to see if there was any change in the return slot.

I guess I have been frugal all of my life. LOL Probably has something to do with being born the last day of the year, and being a tax baby.
