Peanut butter recall hurts FOOD BANKS! |
|
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/... a lot of the stuff donated is peanut butter related and has been recalled which has made them short on feeding the needy.. ordinarily i would say we all need to pitch in and donate to them but since a lot of people i know cant afford their own food it makes me really worry.. food banks are always low as is and now they are having to return a lot of it because of stupid recalls..
does any one have any ideas on how we can some how help the food banks?? its so sad

2. OLIJULSAR (1063) | 11 months ago | Peanut Butter be a cheap source of protein makes it hard to replace it with anything else in the food banks except maybe dried beans. Not alot of children will eat these though so peanut butter is usually the food of choice.
I would judt like to know how these contaminations keep happening? You would think with these factories being as big and producung so many different products they would be a little more watchful of where they get there peanuts from.
The recalls seem to increase evryday and more and more products are added. Who knows when it will stop and when peanut butter will be save to eat again.
As far as helping the food banks...each of us need to do what we can do to get them through this bad time.

OLIJULSAR (1063) | 11 months ago | They are saying in the news that the peanut plant in Georgia knew that they were sending out contaminated peanuts and did it anyway. Now what is the FDA going to do about it?

5. Piscesmoon (2885) | 11 months ago | Wow. I hadn't even heard of a salmonella outbreak related to peanut products. Perhaps that means brands sold in Australia aren't affected - or just shows that I don't watch TV. I read the article you linked to but it didn't mention brands. I guess I'll have to Google to find out more.
Being such a protein-rich food AND one that most kids would eat, it does make sense that food banks give out peanut butter, although a huge number of kids seem to have peanut allergies these days. Admittedly, I don't know how food recalls work. Does someone have to produce a receipt to receive a refund on a recalled product? I would have thought that the food banks could return the products to the company involved and, either be issued with a replacement product or get a standard refund of the recommended retail price. Actually, I would have thought that, if a food bank produced a whole heap of the company's product, the company would replace it, no questions asked. After all, they don't want the bad publicity of providing a product that someone eats and dies from.
With the worldwide recession, it is sad that most people simply can't afford to donate to charities anymore. Most of us are struggling to keep up with our own family's needs. My mother's church (and probably many others - don't know as I am not a church-goer), have a thing they call Harvest Sunday, where everyone in the congregation is asked to bring non-perishables that are donated to services that supply needy people. Wouldn't you think companies - factories/supermarkets and other companies would get onboard and supply foodstuff to organisations that provide food to needy community members. Surely the food banks have a liaison person who rings companies for donations and, it would have to be good advertising for the companies who donate to these organisations? I know EVERYONE is doing it rough lately but, the major companies are in the best position to help out.

moonlitmagikchild (7151) | 11 months ago | i think you have to take the product back to the store you bought it at but with the food banks getting some directly from like places that are day old bread type places and i dont know if they can return it.. heck if they have anything to replace it with!
| |
|
|
Piscesmoon (2885) | 11 months ago | Yeah, that makes sense. Still, you'd think companies like the peanut butter producers, would swap the recalled product for one that is not affected. If nothing else, it would be good public relations.

6. cripfemme (5785) | 11 months ago | I'm on foodstamps, yet I always manage to save a couple of dollars for the food bank. It means I give up junk food for the most part, although I brought lots of chocolate for the libary fundraiser today. I also keep cupons that I don't use for soup, which I hate, and buy those things for the food bank.

7. ahgong (3853) | 11 months ago | Well, you can try by going to all the bakeries at the end of the day. See if they are gonna be throwing out any left over bread. A lot of the high end bread shops will usually throw away their left over bread for the day to maintain a certain quality of freshness in their products.
You can do a one off collection everyday and deliver them to the food banks. These breads are still good for consumption. They are maybe a little dry which will fail the food quality control of these bakeries. So that is a good start.
