I owe a thanks to one of my Australia friends, Goodie for sending me this in an email. As many of you know Australia is being hit with it's worse "wildfires" in known history. The fires are suspected of being started by arsonists. The death toll of humans is near 200 people, thousands of homes completely destroyed, some people were even killed in their cars as they tried to get away from the fires, but the fires were faster and overtook many in their cars burning them to death.
And then there are the animals. Whenever I hear about ANY natural disaster be it floods, fires, tornadoes, hurricanes, earthquakes..my first thought is What happens to all the animals?
Here's a link to the article my friend sent me, plus a video of a fireman trying to help a koala bear that had burnt paws
{Warning: This is NOT a referral link but a link to the article}
http://news.ninemsn.com.au/national/750113/fires-may-have-killed-a-million-animals
From the article it's thought that the wildlife that has perished in these fires in Australia could possibly run in the millions...not just domestic animals, but all types of wildlife....koalas, kangaroos, owls, lizards, possums...."
Here's a brief excerpt from the article itself
Ms Chappell is among those working to rescue the animals and says the extent of the devastation may never be known.
"It [the animal death toll] will be in the hundreds of thousands, possibly millions," Ms Chappell said.
"We are not just talking the animals we are familiar with, there are gliders and all sorts of possums, antechinus [a mouse-like marsupial], bandicoots, birds — there is so much wildlife.
Koalas are also especially vulnerable to wildfires because they move slowly on the ground. (Read one firefighter's amazing koala rescue story here).
The wildfires cut through parks and forests and sent countless wombats and other native species fleeing.
One resident reported seeing kangaroos bouncing down the road with flames at their backs.
"It is devastating, the actual size of the destruction is devastating to a number of wildlife populations," Ms Chappell said.
It is feared endangered populations of gliders, owls and lizards may be among the dead.
For those that have survived, the recovery process will be long and slow.
"They have lost their homes too and they are not going to be rebuilt in a year or two years, it is a much longer-term picture," Ms Chappell said.
"You can't reconstruct a forest."
The fires also destroyed four wildlife shelters including Stella Reid's Wildhaven shelter at Kinglake.
Ms Chappell said Ms Reid escaped with her life, but the animals were not so lucky.
"It has been a real blow for everybody I think. That is what has really brought it home for everybody, hearing that Stella Reid's place was totalled and all her animals ... they weren't able to get any animals out at all."

My hopes and prayers are still with those from Australia and truly hope these fires end soon. Whenever you hear of natural disasters, do you too think...What about the poor animals and the natural wildlife and forests??

Does not quite happen that way... but...
I think a million of animals is a bit over the top... unless you are counting the insects and the lizards.
Wombats and Koalas would get caught in it. But their numbers are small.
Kangaroos would move a lot faster than the fire and escape. So would the birds.
Animals would not wait for the fire to get there. They have a sixsense about that... and would move out.
As for the forests... only the leaves get burn.
The tree and the root of the plants survive.
Twelve months later... everything is green again.
Sure... it will take two or three years to be back to normal.
But once it is back to normal... it will catch fire again.
This is nature at work.
Bushfires were common in Australia long before it was colonized by the english.
Burning vegetation feed the earth and promote grow.
The farmers do it all the time.
And so did the aborigines long before we came here.

Nope don't millions of wildlife is far-fetched as I found this article

And I quote some of it here
SYDNEY – Kangaroo corpses lay scattered by the roadsides while wombats that survived the wildfire's onslaught emerged from their underground burrows to find blackened earth and nothing to eat.
Wildlife rescue officials on Wednesday worked frantically to help the animals that made it through Australia's worst-ever wildfires but they said millions of animals likely perished in the inferno.
Scores of kangaroos have been found around roads, where they were overwhelmed by flames and smoke while attempting to flee, said Jon Rowdon, president of the rescue group Wildlife Victoria.
I know all about animals having a "sense" about these things, but from what I'm gathering the fires swept so quickly the fires often overtook them

OK... I did not say that none would die.
I am just questionning the million figure.
Even if they have more kangaroos in Victoria than we do where I am... we would be talking perhaps of 10.000 kangaroos? Don't know.

that's my first thought.
especially when people are evacuated and leave their animals behind.
why someone would leave a pet in a house in the face of an advancing fire is beyond me.i'd be thinking horrific thoughts if i did that.
wildlife,i just hope they make it out.
most often they do,but there's always a few unfortunates, like that koala.
that poor thing,she looked miserable.

it is,but if it's for the animals and the photog said it was ok..
i guess then it's ok.
all i've heard is the koala "found love" where she's being treated.
i guess she's sweet on the other koala they had there.

I haven't heard any updates about the fires have you? Yeah, that poor koala lot like it was in some kind of daze. One thing I think is unfair...they are using that photo of the koala at different animal organizations to prompt people to donate...don't you think that's taking advantage there??

I have read about the fire in Australia in the news. It is sad to note that such incident happened. I pity those people who have lost their lives during the incident as well as the wildlife. I do hope that everything will be fine soon.

I am so sad about this, not just the loss of people but all of those animals. It just nails the fact that nature is a power greater than we are and cannot take anything for granted.
What makes me more angry is when destruction of forests and jungles, and animals who lose their lives due to the loss of their habits, that are done on purpose, by humans. That makes me more angry because it IS avoidable.

I forgot to mention, that yes I had heard that it was started by one or more people, but once a fire starts, nature takes over and there is no stopping such a thing. That is what I meant by the power of nature.

All the fires in California were started by arsonists too. What kind of sick mind does that anyway? Yes, the force of nature can be pretty devastating. Look at what just recently happened in Oklahoma where three tornadoes hit in one day and it's not even officially tornado season.

Hi pye,
That poor koala but she was the lucky to be alive, I am heartsick to know that all those wildlife and domestic animals had perished in the fire and the worst thing is it was cause by some callous persons or person, I just can't bear it anymore and all the people that had suffered. I am lost for words. I pray for them.
Bright Blessings.

Yeah, that koala is lucky to be alive...poor thing looked a bit bewildered. I read somewhere that wild koalas don't normally interact with humans and stay away from us---from what I'm reading the fires are still burning

The wild fire in Australia annoyed me, especially in view of the fact that it killed so many and destroyed so many property and the people who started it are still not all arrested.I feel so bad about it.

These fires have been devastating, and I cannot understand why anyone would start a fire, especially of this magnitude, I suppose it would be too much to hope for that those who started it were also among the victims.
It has been suggested that the fires were worse than they should have been because of the environmentalists who objected to fire brakes being built, because they may have destroyed shelter for mice or insects (which again probably didn't survive).
It was quite touching seing a Koala being given a drink of water (I believe they don't usually drink).

As one person mentioned here, I haven't heard any coverage of what's going on in the Queensland area of Australia where they are having the opposite problems...horrible flooding. The fire is also probably worse since Australia is having a real heat wave (our winter is their summer)
Yes that was amazing with that koala..they aren't known to let humans near them if they are wild ones....poor thing must have been in some kind of shock

I am also wondering how are our friend's doing that are here in mylot that live in Australia? I am hoping that everyone who can help and can donate , will do it. They need prayers but will also need many dollars and much labor! @Aurone (4755)

How terrible. Australia has some of the most amazing wildlife anywhere. This is truly horrible. I often think about the domestic animals that suffer during natural disasters because most people don't care about their animals the way I do--I won't leave without my kitties. And you hear about many many pets being left behind. But I have never considered the wildlife--I just assumed that in the case of a fire or something they relocated themselves. But it sounds like that is not the case. How very sad. I hope those animals can get some help.

I have also been praying for the victims of the fires in Australia, pyewacket. It has turned out to be much worse than I ever expected. Many people don't consider the loss of life in the animal population when a disaster strikes, but I think that the attention it received during Hurricane Katrina opened the eyes of most everyone. I also hope that this ordeal will soon be over for the people of Australia.

Yes it horrible and the police now believe that the fire that wiped out Marysville and Kinglake was arson. The fire fighters say that people are still lighting fires after they have moved through an area. I cannot understand these people and I hope they are arrested and severely punished.
It is always shocking to see such devastation but it seems to touch closer to home when you know the place that burned. I used to live in the eastern suburbs of Melbourne and these towns are well known to me. This is such a tragic loss of people, animals and the environment. We have had terrible fires before but never this bad and the environment experts say it will get worse as the climate changes.
Yes I think about everyone who never escaped both human and animal. The Australian bush is also used to fire and some of our plants do not acutally produce seeds unless they are burned which seems really strange but arson is not natural.
These fires are still burning and still moving. More towns could soon be under threat. We can hope the weather changes as they desperately need some rain to kill the fires.

Im from victoria and a friend of mine lives there and has cattle. he literally broke through police barriers to get to the city to buy water tanks so that he could take the tanks around his property and spray it with water to stop the fires claiming everything.
