Do you do it yourself or do you pay the groomers? How much do you spend on grooming your dog?

I am a groomer, so I groom my dogs myself. To tell you the truth, even though I'm thankful they do, I've never understood why someone would pay me to groom their dogs. It costs a lot of money. The basic bath for a small dog (bath ears and nails) starts at $25. The bigger or more aggressive the dog, the more I charge. Just cutting their nails makes me $10, and it usually only takes about 2 minutes. It's fairly easy money, except for the fact that I have multiple scars from getting bitten. But luckily, I have never cut a dog. And I've only had to turn away three. One was a German Shephard that refused to get out of her kennel, and the other two were brother and sister Chows. All three of them were just too aggressive...I would have ended up in the hospital. I have had to muzzle a few, but I only do so for a few minutes. I would never use it for more than 20 minutes, or without the owner's consent.

You sound like you enjoy your job! I'm sure a lot of people appreciate your work. Have you even been injured or bitten severely from the job? What do you do when they bite you?

Thankfully, I haven't been bitten too badly. Mostly on the hands and arms....a couple of the bites went all the way to the bone. But they all healed alright. One thing that helps is that I refuse any animal that isn't up-to-date on its shots. I did get bitten by a cat on the hand one time and my whole arm swelled up from my fingers to my shoulder. That scared me!! But I just took a trip to the hospital and began the 10-shot regimin for rabies. Not fun. That was the last cat I will ever groom. I am a dog person. When I get bitten, I try to stay calm so that the animal won't get any more upset. If I can, I finish the groom...most of the time it's just a little nip. Then I soak the wound in betadine. You get used to it after a while. The job definitely isn't for everyone, but I love it.

Wow, that is scary! But very courageous. I wouldn't mind grooming dogs too but I don't know how I'd handle getting bitten... although it's happened to me a couple of times.

I have 2 beagles and it does not really take that much, I brush them out, give them a bath, and clip their nails. They love being brushed, hate taking a bath, and give me no trouble when i clip their nails.

My dog hates baths too... and she doesn't like her nails being clipped too, but she loves getting brushed.

I brush our dog myself when it needs doing about once a week, anything else my sister does when we see her, he has really short fur though and doesnt need much grooming. My sister is a qualified dog groomer and she doesnt charge me a penny!

That's a great advantage you have... a sister as a groomer! Thanks for sharing.

I groom my puppy by myself, I don't see why I need to pay somebody to touch my dog and I know how to do the grooms and I have time. I spend $$ on the tools and I can re-use the tools for quite a long time.

That's very true. You can have a closer bond with him/her too.

Hello I have a black lab...she sheds ALOT but requires little grooming. I brush her myself at home and bath her myself too. Although she does not need to be bathed often she has an amazingly healthy coat and rarely smells...when she does I know it is time for a bath. She dosnt need to go to a groomer ever. My aunt knows how to clip nails but she never needs hers done, last time we were at the vet she said it was because she runs on the concrete with my son so it files them down for her! I feel really lucky to not have that extra expense or hassle!!! Although if needed be i would still do it my dog is so worth it.

That's good that you can do it all yourself, I think the relationship becomes stronger too. I've heard that the concrete files the nails for dogs too. Thanks for sharing!

Minature Schnauzer hair cut - Here is his Schnauzer hair do. Hes all spiffed up and ready to go!
We groom are dog at home. We give him the Schnauzer hair do and everything. We bathe him weekly and brush him when he needs it. Once of year we will take him to a pro for the flea dip and the extras. Here's a picture of the Schnauzer hair cut we gave him.
