This was something new to me. But when I heard if from the radio, it got me all curious.
So I did some search on the internet and found that it is true.
No wonder some of the breakfast I took or the meals I had for lunch makes me feel so sleepy.

Aparrently, foods that contains tryptophan, the amino acid that the body uses to make serotonin, the neurotransmitter that slows down nerve traffic so your brain isn't so busy, make you feel sleepy.
Foods that rank high on the Glycemic Index will also help you to fall asleep.

Here is the list of foods that makes one sleepy:
Golden Grahams
Plain Bagel
Corn chips
Watermelon
Honey
Mashed potatoes
Saltine crackers
Graham crackers
French fries
Frozen waffles
Vanilla wafers

Jelly beans

That is like darn near everything that I eat for all my meals. No wonder I am always feeling sleepy in the office!
Guess we must take note of what we eat eh? lol

But these foods are best if you find it hard to go to bed at night.

Well, I just search it on the net. I am not sure if honey alone will make you sleep.
Maybe the effect is not as strong as the other foods on the list. But I know that drinking honey sure has a soothing effect on me.

I got it from different sources on the web. And since all of them listed the same food groups and similar food types, I just consolidate them into one single list.

You do? I always feel good and relaxed after drinking milk. Especially warm milk. And on days which are particulary tough to sleep, it does help to some extend to help me go back to sleep.

Maybe we all react differently to milk eh? I am one of the majority in general then. winklol

lol =D I"m so so surprised by all the food listed here.. lol =D Almost all the breakfast items are inside the list, and that, those foods are actually rich in protein and are supposed to keep us real full.. hehe ^_^ Or maybe it's due to the fullest we have, that makes us sleepy instead?? hehe ^_^

But i cant imagine etaing of cornflakes and crackers can make one sleepy, because they are meant to be eaten as snacks and breakfast.. The same goes for milk soy products!! confused

As for water melon, it's an after meal desert and it's sweet too, by right that should make us more awake due to the sweetness which increases our metalbolism rate in the body.. lol =D shocked

All these are really new to me here.. hehe ^_^

You are not alone my friend. In fact, it only hit me when i saw the list.
Cos there was one stage I was having peanut butter sandwiches every day. And I feel sleepy afterwards. But I did not feel that way when I stopped the peanut butter sandwiches.

At first I thought it was the tea beverage I have when ever I eat the sandwiches. But even when I stopped the tea, it is still the same. Just never occur to me that it could be the one causing one to sleep! lol

The list is an eye opener, ain't it? lol

lol =D I will never allow the Zzz monster to attack me during the afternoons.. haha =D I will make sure i keep walking around and finding things to do, but never allow myself to be idle.. haha

Given my job nature requiring me to sit behind a computer, it is tough to be walking around to keep awake.

Friend, office cubicle leh. How to stand and still work on the computer at the same time? That would be a very awkward position to be in. Very bad posture for the back! Worst than slouching on the chair! lol

I just did a google for the key words food sleepy and then read them through. Consolidating facts along the way and then compiling them to this discussion.
I cannot remember were I got all the information from.

It's natural to have a sleepy feeling after eating, which would be caused by all foods, and not just the ones on your list haha.

Yeah... that is possible too.
But to know what causes the sleepiness, wouldn't you want to try these foods for their effect?
Especially on those long, insominia nights where you try to sleep but sleep just would not come?

Honey makes sleep, but honey makes me thirst.Usually I drink honey water and go to bed, but fastly I get thirst, so I drink water and go to wc, and again i feel thirst and drink water and again wc and drink and wc.........insomnia

Oh my... most of the food that i love to eat are on your list... maybe this is the reason why i always feel sleepy after eating lunch or dinner... i guess i need to make more research on this... and to try to schedule the type of food that i will prepare...

Yes serotonin can make one feel sleepy. In fact there are supplements that can help release this chemical for people to have a better quality of sleep. But eating foods that can make us feel sleepy is certainly not welcomed for the office workers. I will definitely feel sleepy when I consume soft drinks, fast food, or any starchy food. Milk products are also another culprit. Therefore I've switched to having light lunches avoiding the food you mentioned as far as possible. Also I'd drink water instead of canned drinks. So far this have been quite effective for me.

Yeah... I have been avoiding sodas as well. And it is working. I do not feel so sleepy in the afternoons. But I still feel tired. Probably the sleep I am getting is not quality enough.

That has to be worked on. Maybe food from the list in the evenings may help! lol

i don;t know all those list items can make us sleep .

but onething i know is when i take rice and yogurt in dinner and night,i get good sleep whenever i want. yogurt makes us cool and gets good sleep also. yogurt is good for our health and if we get good sleep ,with sleep also our health will be good. so eat yogurt daily ,if u want good sleep.

Hmm... yoghurt and rice! That is a new combination that I have never tried.
Is it good? Wouldn't it make the rice all creamy? And that would be very overwhelming, no? confused
