How Old Were You When.....

I was 18 1/2 when I moved out and the reason was I had just switched colleges and I was too far away from home. My parents weren't exactly thrilled about the whole idea either but it all worked out well. Actually my mom cam and stayed in my apartment with me for two weeks when I first moved in. We were and still are very close and I think she had a harder time letting go than I did! LOL

hi lynne you will say thats much too late but I moved out when I was 30. I had moved out temporarily with 19 right after school cause I studied in another town, and when I had completed my training as a librarian it was the best to move back to my moms place and look for work from there.
I thought that would be only for a limited time but it were nine complicated years when I had jobs, paid rent to her yet was treated like a little child.
I wanted to make sure, first, before signing a renting contract that I had enough cash stashed away for emergencies so I would not lose the roof over my head and be forced to get back to my mom.
When I was 30 I found the job I still have till today and I thought Public Service is secure enough to go for it and now finally have my own place and get rid of this daily bickering about each and everything with my mother who was a perfectionist by that time and thought I am a zero in housekeeping.

i would have done the same thing if i were you. i just hate it so much when i don't have my own space and personal freedom. of course i know my limits, not the kind of freedom that will eff my life up...just that kind of, u know, freedom to make personal decisions in life.
im just curious, did things turn out better for you when you moved out? or did it turn worse? what happened next???

I can't tell by now, but I prefer to move out when I have a stable mind set. Living in the Phil is a different case, compare to the US. not just like in US people are somehow needed to move when he/she turns 18. But in our country, there is a strong bond in each family member, that even the grandsons of the parents are living in just one roof. In different raises we have different ways of taking a site.We can be independent by mind and in all oftenly when we get married because that is really when we are planning to build our own haouse and family.

hi there lynnemg.. in our country we don't really moving out in our house, mostly the children are still with their parents eventhough they are already married..it's our culture, we are used to it.. like in my case, i'm a single mother, me and my child are still living with my parents, but i have a work and i'm also giving money to my mother for the expenses inside the house like light and water and also for the food.. if i have a good job and big salary i really like to move out, and if i will become married, i will decide to move out to become more independent in every ways i can.. nice discussion.. have a nice day and happy mylotting!!

I was 17 when I was on my own. Kind of not wanting to but the way things worked out the person who was supposed to be caring for me did her own thing and I was alone, got married as soon as I turned 18 and the rest is history.

I moved out when I was 19 and got married. Before that there was no good reason for me to leave my parent's home. I had a job and a new car to support. My parents and I got along and my fiance wasn't finished with school yet so moving into our own place would have forced him to work as well as concentrate on his studies. Some kids are in a hurry to move out on their own but I had all the freedom in the world along with all the comforts of home so I wasn't in any rush.

My son moved out two times, one after graduation and got his first job. We supported him, but when out he kelp calling back asking for living common senses, like where to buy this and how to cook that. We were patient to teach. After a try of several months, he decided to be back.

The second time is when his son was four years old, when his apartment was one year after decoration. They want to have their own life. We understand and it proved a good decision. We have more leisure time, and they enjoy running their own family, and the child is ok with a part time helper.

Your mother's reluctance is understandable. You had better explain to them your reasons, and get prepared for the hardships, and never forget to call and go back to see them to reduce their concern.
