Sprained ankle

My son fell and hurt his ankle yesterday at school during last period. He was limping on it when he got home, and it had already begun swelling. We figure it is just a sprain and had him prop the foot up and put ice on it. The swelling became worse and he can't put any weight on it now. How do you decide when to go to the doctor with something like this? I've kept him home from school and he is using crutches to get around the house.

Thanks for your advice. You make a good point with the example of your friend.

Seems like evryone was falling over yesterday. I've just come from another discussion and at least three fell over! I agree with the first response and don't take it lightly. The longer you leave it, if there is something broken or out of place, then the longer it will take to heal and get back to normal. I hope your son is soon hopping about again and that it is nothing serious! Good luck!

A small bean bag also called a footbag. You play by trying to keep the bag in the air with your feet. Kind of a juggling with the feet.

I sprained my ankle, and then sprained it again and again, 2 more times before it healed. I never went to the doctor, but I knew it wasnt broken, but it is still a little weak at times. But if you have health insurance, I'd say go ahead and make an appointment, just to be sure, =)

At this time I'm feeling more confident that it isn't broken. He says it is feeling better and the swelling has gone down some.

Don't put weight on the ankle because the nerves in that area becomes weak.Try going to the doctor and asking tablets for swelling and pain. The swelling will go immediately but the pain will take some time to go as the ankle needs to be strengthened.See that he takes a lot of rest his legs will automatically heal.

I have given him some ibuprofen to help with the pain and swelling. We borrowed some crutches so he could stay off the foot.

The ibuprofen did help and he stayed off the foot most of the day yesterday. He's back at school today.
