Former First Lady "Totally Forgot" President's Address to Congress email this discussion to a friend?

I guess maybe for Lady Laura Bush it's "Out of sight, out of mind"; the recently departed First Lady told ABC News she did not watch President Obama's address to Congress on Tuesday night because she "totally forgot about it."

http://abcnews.go.com/Politics/Story?id=6966519&page=1

She added, "The next day I thought it was so ironic that for eight years I would be a nervous wreck before the State of the Union, and for days before, as George would be preparing his speech, worried about it and thinking about what was going to be in the speech. And this time it came and went and I didn't even think about it."

No, I'm not here to attack Laura Bush, I have no desire to do that, I just found it interesting that she didn't watch her husband's successor's first speech before the Joint Sessions of Congress. I'm not sure if I'd have expected her to watch it to see what it's like being "on the other side" or if she maybe would have had a natural curiosity to compare performances and reactions.

Maybe she's just so relieved to be out of Washington D.C. she really didn't even give it a thought! What do you think?

I'm not surprised. I can't remember the last time I watched a president's address to congress and you know how into politics I am. I just find those things boring as hell. Sure, if my wife were giving it I'd care, but since Bush isn't president, I'd have to go with you on the "Out of sight, out of mind".

I'm really surprised that you don't watch the State of the Union Addresses.

It's time out of my life I'd rather keep to myself. I typically watch the highlights the following night. For the most part they just rehash the same things they've already said many times. There are never any surprises.

I can actually see this happening. She paid attention more because her husband was front and center and she was expected to be there - either visibly or behind the scenes. That isn't the case any more. She no longer has that social responsibility, so I can totally see her "forgetting" to watch it. Hell - I didn't even bother watching it, and I supported him for election!!

Personally if I had been in her shoes I would not have bothered much about it. It would not have been on my list of priorities. She probably is still getting used to being just a normal citizen after 8 years of being in the limelight. I could see how she would forget although I am pretty sure George was watching very closely.
BTW I did not watch it either. blush

I don't think it's strange at all. Think of what this Lady has been thru with her husband for the last 8 years! I'm sure she is so happy to be home again and getting back to her own life that it would be super easy for it to slip from her mind. And she as much as said that in the quote you provided, if you think about it.

I also can imagine she would make sure it "slipped her mind" since she's probably had it with politics for now, but she wouldn't say that to the press -- because she is such a fine Lady.

Annie,

Of course it couldn't have been other distractions such as maybe her mother-in-law's impending open heart surgery, could it?

myLot reputation of 65/100. anniepa (9146)   ranked 377 out of 6,327 in politics  9 months ago

The bit of sarcasm I seem to detect here really isn't necessary since I hadn't even been aware of Barbara Bush's surgery until after I started this discussion. I certainly wish her nothing but the best.

Annie,

It wasn't really intended to be sarcastic but rather to point out that people do have other things in their lives that don't pertain to a presidential address. Still, she may have been like me and avoided it purposefully.

myLot reputation of 65/100. anniepa (9146)   ranked 377 out of 6,327 in politics  9 months ago

I'm sorry, Rodney, I didn't mean to jump on you there, I really hadn't heard of Barbara Bush's surgery until later last night. I do understand everyone, including former First Ladies, has their own personal lives and family matters that take center stage, as well they should.

Well comparing her mother in law is having health issues (and under went heart surgury recently) I am sure she had other things on her mind. ALso if you saw Bush Sr. at the swearing in than you know he is not doing well either. So it looks like she may have her hands full right now. Plus she is probly so glad to be out of the fish bowl (white house) and back to a somewhat normal life with an actual degree of privacy that she is enjoying it. She was a first lady that liked her privacy. She never liked the spot light or was comfortable with it. I think she may do an interview every now and again but for the most part I think she will stick to her personal life. Which is fine. Some former first ladies want to go on with a public life like Hilary Clinton. Some perfer a private life like Nancy and Barbara. Which ever makes them happy is fine.

myLot reputation of 65/100. anniepa (9146)   ranked 377 out of 6,327 in politics  9 months ago

I certainly agree that whichever makes any of our former First Ladies happy is certainly fine and they all spend a long enough time living in that fish bowl you mentioned. As I told a previous poster, I hadn't been aware of Barbara Bush's surgery until after I'd started this discussion and days after I'd first heard of Laura's comments regarding the new President's speech. I did NOT mean any sort of disrespect towards either of the Bush First Ladies, believe me. I don't know if Barbara's pre-scheduled surgery had been made public prior to last night but that was when I first heard of it, after it had ended.

they did not announce it that I know of til she was already in the hospital. They did that I guess to keep the press down so she could have some privacy.

I know you did not mean anything against her or the Barbara. I thought it was a little unusual til I heard about Barbara being in the hospital.Looks like the Bush's have a lot of health issues going on right now (including Bush Sr) so Laura probly has her hands full. Or she just might be completely sick of politics after 8 years in the white house and just wants a complete break from it. Who knows.

I'm pretty sure that neither Laura nor George had any interest at all in seeing Obama's address to Congress. They've had it with politics for a while. Of course I could be wrong. George W. probably still thinks that the world adores him. I did watch the address by the way & found it to be interesting & well performed. There is no doubt that Pres. Obama is a gifted speaker. I am quite pleased with out current President.

Well, she has her life like anyone else, and for eight years and some before that, she was the First Lady of the Nation and before that of Texas. If I was her, I wouldn't look, read, smell or touch anything political unless by choice and that goes for any ex first lady(except Hillary cause she ain't quitting no time soon). but that's my own opinion. and you can't get mad with Barbara either because she is still in the hospital recuperating.

myLot reputation of 65/100. anniepa (9146)   ranked 377 out of 6,327 in politics  8 months ago

I wasn't MAD at anybody, not at all. I just found it interesting that Laura had said she'd forgotten. I don't mean that in a bad way either. I wonder that about all former First Ladies or other members of a President's family - they live their lives in a fishbowl for all those years and then it's back to "normal", if you can ever have a normal life after that.

She probably did; the other day the President was on tv again but I didnt see it myself; Plus let's think about this. The Bushes were probably trying their best to move back into their home; They have been gone for eight years due to George's presidency, and with no one telling you that you have to do this or have to do that, I wouldnt want to see a press conference, a State of the Union or nothing again if it was up to me. And I hope I wasn't being accusatory when I made my earlier comment. She's a free bird now, she don't owe nothing to no one.
