i just bought one yesterday and great timing since i read we are suppose to have some bad storms in a few hours!! this will be my first time using it and im excited since i have never had one before.. i usually end up sleeping through storms or not knowing till its almost too late to seek shelter that one is happening.. my house is in a valley between a highway and a train tracks and on a dead end and it has to be raining down hail pratically before i hear ANYTHING! and i dont really hear wind much either.. of course this is nice but not good if you have no other way of knowing that there is weather issues going on.. and i currently live very close to downtown that was torn up by a tornado like 12 years or so ago and then i just moved from a town that a tornado ripped apart and got as close as a block away from me.. my best friends town got tore to shreds and was even on the news a year or two ago.. so YEAH im glad i invested in it!!
if i am not on later i am prob just riding out the storm or maybe i lost internet lol.. fun fun! what type of weather alert radio do you have? or do you have other ways of getting weather alerts?

We live in south Florida and we really should get one but haven't yet. Our neighbor across the street has one that is set so loud (because he has a large house) that we can hear it when the weather alert alarm goes off so we know that something is going on somewhere. Unfortunately, he has it set for a very wide range so he gets alerts for the coast and we're inland. I really feel sorry for his bird because many times when that thing goes off, he's not at home and it blares until her returns.

Wow!~ With all that description, the weather alert radio is definitely a very handy tool for you!~ As for us, we just watch the news weather report that's all. If our place ever get flooded, the whole of the island we're on will be gone, haha
So we're not too worried on that part. At the moment, we're not in the earthquake belt & I hope it stays so. So that one's off the list too. As for winds & storms, I think it's not that bad as what you guys are experiencing. The worst was the time the Tsunami hit. But our area is not affected plus we stay in an apartment so that's not too much of a problem too

sounds like you have it good as far as not having to deal with some of the disasters out there

I have a weather radio, although I don't have it plugged in. Not that I like to live dangerously here in Tornado Alley, but that the darn thing will go off too many times sometimes! When the storms come in fast and hard, it's one alert after another, lol!
But we have one computer always on with a weather alert program running, plus, until we get cable or satellite, we can only tune in the "local" stations (in Oklahoma City, 70 miles away), but they have state-of-the-art tracking systems, so we feel pretty safe. Or maybe I should say, we feel pre-warned enough to take action.

We have a NOAA weather radio. It is a good thing to have if you are anywhere that sees tornadoes. We are in Arkansas and have had some close calls. We have a storm shelter so the alerts let us know when to get in. It is kind of annoying though when it goes off in the middle of the night and it is just for thunderstorms. I have taken the batteries out a couple times. Our towns tornado siren is about a block from our house so I figured if it was going off I would hear it.

I do not have one as I live about two blocks from the sirens....so I do get woken up if there is an emergency! So between work and home I have it covered. One of my friends does though as they live out in the country across from a lake in a very heavily wooded area...

Hope you are in an adventerous place then...I just on my TV for weather alerts, it scrolls down in the news channels...but the funny part whenever they predict something and inform us, the weather would be just opposite to what they described would happen...this has happened around 60% of the time

yeah i have had that happen too!! some times i think the weather people are completely clueless! they will say snow by the inches and it get warmer.. they will say a storm and it wont be raining lol.. usually if i am awake i will just turn on the news but the last couple of bad storms i slept through which disturbed me.. some times i sleep really hard to where nothing wakes me up and im worried one of these days i wont wake up till its too late to seek shelter since i have to get all my pets together.. but other times when i dont sleep well a bird could chirp a mile away and wake me.. i cant win lol

Depending on where you live in the 'States, this can be a very good thing. The weather where I live now is rather boreingly predictable. Cold after September, snowing after November, cool after April. I've lived in both Georgia and Tennessee, but the first tornado I ever saw was in Arizona. Even though I grew up in Southern California, the worst earthquake I endured was in Denver.
