The Government Said No.............and that's when the fight started.

Like the wife who bemoans the signs she sees in herself of aging, and begs her husband to say something nice to her, and he tells her, '"At least your eyesight is good'..............and that's when the fight started'; my hubs recent days off at home went pretty much the same way. We filed our tax returns. Last year we could only claim part of our moving expenses and this year we were told we couldn't claim the balance as the tax laws had changed. Fight number one......... Last year I was allowed certain deductions due to my back problems and inability to work outside the home. This year I'm not allowed those deductions as I handled the books at home for my hubs reno business. Fight number two..... Last year we could claim certain deductions due my son's illness. This year we can't carry those expenses over because he is no longer a dependent. Fight number three.... H&R Block has now banned us from using their service. My hubs is back at work, and I will be spending most of this week researching our tax laws and finding loopholes and revising our return in order to gain the maximum deductions allowable. Because I just KNOW that the government, for the sixth year in a row, is going to reject it again and again, and reduce our rebate to practically nil as it has done every year. Fight number four begins.............without the shouting and desk banging. March is not my favorite month. Neither is April. So. Have you done your taxes yet? Wanna do mine? LOL

we have been using an accountant service to do our home and my shop tax. I have tried do it myself but it was wrong and the accountant had to revise it. so for years now he has been taking care of ours and I'd rather use him again now that the tax laws changed. Not sure though which laws changed but we will talk to the accountant when he comes to file our tax and maybe he can give us tips for us to survive until end of this year. I can't believe H&R bans people and I think a carry over is a carry over, it's not your fault that you can't fully claim it last year because they limit the number you can claim anyway. and yes, march isn't my favorite month either. april to september are.

I don't have taxes to do being on comp but mu husband will get a real nice break on what he owes Uncle Sam since he can claim me and my 4 kids as his dependents this year. That is, even after my oldest daughters father claimed her as a dependent on HIS tax return even after he lost primary physical custody of her in March of 2007. I would love to see the look on his face when he gets his letter from the IRS telling him he needs to pay back her portion of the child tax credit he received this year....plus interest! But so far I have already done my step brothers taxes and my grand fathers taxes. My grandfather was quite pleased with me. He cashed in $24,000 worth of his stocks and thought he was going to be paying through the nose. After doing itemized deductions for him and giving myself a migraine in the process, not only doesn't he owe any money he is going to get $68 back from the government. Which he promptly pulled out of his wallet and gave me for my time. lol H&R block would have charged him 3x that much to do the work I did for him, but it's Ok. Try TAXACT.com. Pay the extra $9.99 and do the itemized deductions. I've been using them for 4 years and having had a return rejected yet.

I can do without the migraine, but I don't think that'll happen. lol I have a program from the Canadian Gov't called "QuickTax" they sent me when I did a survey for them a couple of years ago. I've blown off the dust and am giving it a try..........wish me luck. After all the gov't made this one up, so how much of it can they reject? (yeah that was sarcasm!LOL)

Yeah I filed mine already. I did it online through the IRS site. FREE!! Everyone I know goes straight to H&R Block, and I used them once until I realized that I could do what she was doing for myself and save myself the $100-200. And don't get me started on that emerald card....crap. This year I got my tax refund exactly one week from the date I filed online. Now my state is another thing entirely. Because I have no children and am single...well you know what will happen with that refund, right? I'll be lucky getting back anything. I am just going to mail that in. Which I have not done yet.....Good luck with your IRS woes.

Do you mean you have to file two separate returns? One federal and one state? Oh, that would drive me nuts. Ours are combined, but you do have to know what your province allows or it messes up your federal claims.

Wanna adopt me? Then you'd have a kid and could get money from the state. LOL Like, what's the idea here? Your states can pass laws directly in opposition to federal ones. That's senseless. Rather makes either the state or the federal gov't in a position of being WRONG! Heaven forbid! LOL

Oh yeah, and if you're single they gotcha. LOL Cause on the federal form if I can claim my parents as dependents on the state you can't unless you have children. So even though my income supports three individuals the federal form recognizes this regardless whether they are children or not, but on the state in order for me to get tax credit I would have to have children.... Oh and the state is a much tougher form to fill out and understand compared to the federal.

I'm not even close to getting my taxes done--I bought the software to do them myself (I'm paying $400+ to do half the work???), and all I can think about is this tremendous financial disaster I'm in. Well now we have something else in common. The government takes our money too after they make changes in our income taxes that hve been prepared by anyone and everyone. I have yet to do mine and I'll be going to the same place as I have for 2 years prior to this. They have been the closest to what the government wants to take when they do our taxes. I plan to take my stuff to them this afternoon and they will call me in a week or so to come in and finalize everything. I'm so tired of paying taxes and hen them wanting eveything even more than w have paid in every year. And my husband only claims himself. Then when we do taxes we both get claimed, we still have to pay more in. It's a joke and the joke is on us since we are the ones losing money.

A long month for you and me too. I am worried just how much am I going to have to pay in extra this time and that's on top of paying $175 to over $200 for having the taxes done by these people. Since the IRS changes it and checks it everytime I wish I could just bundle everything up and send it on to them for them to do the taxes and save that fee. lol

You know, if you really think about it, what with computer data bases, paper trails from employers to the gov't, files the gov't already has on us and all the other info in various other data bases that the gov't has access to, you'd think that THEY really could do our taxes for us just be co-relating all the info they have on us as it is! Wonder why THAT idea is not part of the stimulus packages falling like rain from your current government! LOL

Why has H&R Block banned you? They can't turn away business. WTF? Or is it because you got mad when they wouldn't allow deductions you were previously allowed before? Did one of you make a scene? Handled the books? So what? That's not a full time job nor income. Not like he gives you a salary for it, does he? What do you mean carry over your son's deductions. They all should have been deducted in the year they were incurred and at the time they were incurred he was your dependant. Even if it was only half of last year. By rebate, you mean refund or the deductions against his income to reduce your total income for tax purposes? And H&R Block is not the be-all end-all either like everyone thinks they are. They just won't allow deductions that they are not 100% certain of if they are giving you a cashback. Were you doing a cashback? Or just having them file it for you? You can file your own, without them very easily, you know.

You know the hubs. Don't give him his own way and all hell breaks loose! lol He got pissed because we didn't get the tax person he wanted and things went downhill from there. They said because our company is registered (the reno business) that we had to claim me as an employee so I couldn't claim my disability......... Then because Devon was in recovery and then back to work in 2008, and all our out of pocket medical expense were claimed the year before, and he was over 21, we couldn't claim him as a dependent for the months he was with us in 2008. Go figure! That really pissed the hubs off. As for our moving expenses, some had to be carried over to this years tax return and I don't quite get that, but now we can't claim them due to new changes to the tax laws. As for being banned, the woman we were dealing with was a real tarter and when the hubs kept yelling, she finally gave us our file and told us to take our business elsewhere! LOL It was kind of funny actually. And no we never do a cash back, we always have it deposited to our account. And yeah, my QuickTax program only cost me $49.99 and it's good forever apparently. It's tied right to the CRC website so I'll get updates from the website when the laws change and the adjustments will be made automatically. But that's for next year. Right now I'm trying to learn from scratch how the whole thing works and it's damned confusing!

Because you're youngest is in Uni, you can still claim her. Mine aren't. Thanks DAD! Anyway, yes our return is auto deposited into our bank account. Always has been. Yes I did a survey for Quick tax when they first came out which is why I get updates to the program every year at no cost once I've purchased the initial program. One of the perks of doing survey's for the gov't. There were only about two dozen of us across the country that participated apparently. I was living in AB at the time and just never used the program after I installed it as the hubs always took our taxes to H&R. I'll be using it now though. I got my updates loaded this morning in fact. And yes, we will be claiming 'expenses' as the business was run from home. But yes, because I 'worked' and did all the submissions and it's my signature on most of the paperwork, I have to be claimed as an employee. SK law in order to keep our business license I've been told as my name is on the license. Like I said, it's complicated and between provincial laws and federal laws it's a bit of a muddle, but I'll work it out.

Well, my youngest is 21 and we still claim her as a dependant because her principal residence is here, even though she lives in Guelph most of the year to go to University. Hell, even the hubs benefits package will pay all of her prescriptions and dentist while she is still attending school full time. We just supply them with a letter from the University proving she is enrolled there full time. I don't understand why you HAD to claim you as an employee, when you were not. You were his wife and dependant. So, yeah, if he asked yoy to crunch numbers for him and make up some of the books to help him, that just falls into the 'wifely duties' category as far as I am concerned. I'm sure he didn't issue you a paycheque every week for 40 hrs a week's pay. Not like Kenny did for Shirley, remember? She did 'work' at the shop as the secretary, bookkeeper, organizer, etc, etc, etc. She had an office and a desk and a paycheque for it. Your hubby could claim 20% of all your home expenses for a home office use. It is called "Business Use of Home Expenses". Look that form up and use it. So, by deposited into your account, you mean directly from the gov't then? I thought you had to buy a new QuickTax program for every taxation year. That's why I don't use it, because it costs as much to buy as it would to pay someone else to prepare them. Are you sure yours is perpetual? Tax laws do change every year. Cost you $50, I thought you said you got it from doing a survey? Not that confusing on paper, just look at last year's, as most would be similar. You just skip the parts that no longer apply. But yeah, the computer program one is intended to be simple and do alot of calculations for you to prevent addition and subtraction errors. Also, to remind you to do certain calculations and such. But I still find it confusing the one time I tried to use one. I ended up just doing it on paper in the end.

I've always done my own taxes, until this year. Because of our (my husband's) corporation, I didn't want to handle it. He's done corporate taxes before so he was the best choice. Besides, he did some totally freelance work, plus his corporate work, plus was employed by someone else. Too much paperwork for me! I don't know about the laws where you live, but here, in the U.S., we can claim anyone as a deduction as long as we have supported them for over 6 months of the tax year and they are not filing their own taxes. Not many people know about this little law. Of course, if they have made any money at all that year, you have to claim that money as your own income if you claim them as a dependent. I despise tax season! It's one time that we can all truly see where our own government stands as far as caring for it's citizens goes. If you owe them even one penny, they'll come after you with both barrels loaded, charging penalties and interest for each second you owe them but, when they owe you, they take their good ol' time getting that money to you, and we're not allowed to charge THEM penalties or interest! I also very much dislike tax season because so many people wait until the very last day to do their taxes. Guess when my birthday is? Yep, the day before taxes are due (also the anniversary of the day Lincoln was shot and when the Titanic hit the iceberg...not a good day). I never had a very good birthday celebration as an adult because all my friends were busy fretting over their taxes! Not fair!!! At least I'm old enough now to not really WANT to celebrate another birthday. You might be able to find some help by doing a search for "unusual tax deductions" or "strange but legal income tax deductions", something along those lines. It's truly amazing how some people manage to owe nothing and generally get almost every penny back that they've already paid in! We just recently learned that we were in error for 2007's taxes... by about $124,000.00! Holy Poop!!! That was the money my mother had in an IRA account that I inherited. We had totally forgotten about it by the time tax season rolled around in 2008 because all but $7,000.00 of that money went into buying this house and fixing up the old house to sell faster. As long as money you receive goes into real estate, you won't owe taxes on it. A great big, gigantic WHEW!!! Reading all you can about tax laws and legal deductions is a MUST! Don't go by what is listed on the tax forms. The government doesn't want to give you back any money they don't have to, so they leave a lot of legal deductions off of the tax forms. Nope, you've gotta do an internet search to see how other people have managed to "work" the system. Good luck to you!!!

Hey! Move here to the U.S.! As a foreigner, you are entitled to a VERY low interest rate loan to buy your own franchise. You also don't have to pay business taxes for seven years. After seven years, "sell" the business to a relative, another foreigner to this country, and there's another seven years of no business taxes. That's a legitimate way of avoiding business taxes here. My son gets all bent out of shape regarding the people who use this method of avoiding taxes, but I see it as good business sense. If I were able to use this method of avoiding taxes, I would. I almost want to move to another country, become a citizen of that country, then come back here and open up my own franchise! It is so NOT FAIR of our government allowing foreigners this legitimate way to avoid taxes forever when the same is not allowed for natural-born citizens! Foreigners seem to have more benefits for living here than we do.

No, we haven't done ours. My husband has been getting things together to take to our accountant/lawyer who does ours. It's just too complicated anymore to do your own with the laws the way they are, constantly changing. My daughter had hers done last Friday and she said her oldest son cost her $1,000 since he was no longer going to college and had turned 20 this past December. She did find that his and her daughter's father had filed to get her child support stopped, so she quickly sent in her daughter's form because she's claiming herself this year! I pray he didn't claim her! HE is a JERK from the word go...... He's claimed her for years and never done a thing for her but had money from his pay check sent to her Mom because it was in the divorce papers! My husband thinks we may possible get some back this year - haven't done that in YEARS! Or, hopefully we won't have to pay what we've always paid!

I'll keep my fingers crossed for you Barb that you get something back this year. What a treat that would be eh? lol My husband's ex has claimed their two kids every year too (even though his son lived with us on and off, and hardly with her) and not claimed the support he paid her, which he did claim, and therein lies the reason we've been audited every year for years.

My daughter claimed her daughter for about 8 years until he started claiming her via the divorce papers - and they had to stop claiming her daughter. BUT she gave him the right, although she had full custody and didn't have to do it. Also, she let her second husband use one of their 2 sons on his, although she has FULL custody of all the kids! She was being nice, but she had no idea that she'd miss out on things she needed, like the $300 stimulus check he got for a son he hardly ever sees and she could have used the money to pay things he hasn't paid for! I think, if she had it to do over with, she'd not given either of them the chance to use them! If you have papers proving you had custody of the children, then IRS would make the other parent stop claiming him on her tax returns. The way this one was caught, the same ID showed up on both parent's tax returns. IF he hadn't been remarried to a spiteful woman at the time, he'd never have claimed her. But that woman didn't want my daughter to have anything.

I can't remember if you responded to my discussion on taxes or not but I went thru quite a bit of hassle with the IRS this year as well. How about just filing without trying to get all the exemptions? I know a few people that filed the 1040 that could have filed for all the deductions and they fared better that way. H& r Block? I went to them once years ago and would never go back. My last dilema...I did call them. For a "small fee" they would investigate. I did consider it but I'm glad I put a bit more time in it myself...got it cleared up and got my rebate without their help. It sounds as if you are getting misunderstood. In my case I called a tax advocate which was listed in the front of my tax book and he was more than helpful.

I worked for H&R Block and they were very strict about any questionable returns, they needed to protect their audit ratio. The best advice I can give you is to make sure every expense has a paper trail, even if it's just a calendar with your working hours on it. These hours can only be used to delineates work time from personal time on your machines. The only way I know you can claim your hourly time is if you have a separate business from your husband and he buys a service from you. As you can imagine the IRS is not going to be very impressed with this idea. Home business are some of the most audited returns there are. Good Luck to you

I've had a few customers like that and even had to call 911 once he started throwing things. I know it's frustrating but there is no good that can come from killing the messenger.

You would think with the number of families in the U.S. that 'trade' years of claiming their children, that the parent whose turn it is NOT to claim, would not end up paying anyway! Doesn't seem right.
