Have you been on a beach but not gone in the sea?

I went to Hawaii year ago and the waves were so high that people were surfing. If I had tried paddling the waves probably would have knocked me over. Swimming certainly wasn't possible.
Have you ever been on a beach but not gone on the sea. If so why?

A few times. If it is not safe to swim then of course there is no point in trying. Sometimes even though it is not safe to swim, it's still ok to stay by the water and even enter , just not to go any further. In those cases it is kind of ok and I usually stay.
But if it's to dangerous to even stay by the water - as it happened in certain beaches I went - then I just don't have the patience to stay and I just leave.
I like the beach mostly because of the water. Sand and sun are just the place I go to warm up or dry before I go into the water again. So if I can't do it, I get bored really fast :)

I have only been to the beach off the ocean once and I did go into the wate. NOt very far though as the waves would start getting to big and I was afraid of going under and being carried off. I love the beach though it is a beauftiul place to be.

Last time I went to California which has been like 8 years ago, I didn't go in the water.
We just laid on the sand. I took a couple steps into it for a picture but I was afraid to swim because I worried about sharks. Stupid.
