Do you have any things made by your ancestors?

Knitting needles - This is a picture of some treasured knitting needles made by my great-granfather, who died in the 1940s. They are 30cm long.

I have several things dotted around the house that were made by some of my long-dead relatives. Mainly small bits of furniture - some not very good, but precious all the same. I think my favourites are these knitting needles made by my great-grandfather, who was born in 1853, I'm not sure when he made them, but I would guess in the 1920s. They are 30cm long, so they are big, and you have to use thick wool, but it means that you can knit things quite quickly! Do you have any things made by your ancestors?

Interesting question. Thanks for posting it. I have a wooden carved bird that my uncle made and some knitted doll clothes and quilts that my hubby's mom made. I also treasure a painting that an artist did of my mom when she was 18 years old...that is the most special treasure.

I have quite a few things that were made by ancestors. Some of my favorites are tools that my great great grandpa made. There's forks that he added deer antler to (for the handles) and there's a knife set that he made. I still use the knives today, they stay real sharp for a long time...he did a great job making them and tempering the steel. He liked to work with wood, so I have a three cornered shelf that he made that has an ivy design. I have quilts that were made by family members in the late 1800's, as well as tatting and fine croched dresser-scarves, and things like that. I love family history, so it's wonderful I have these memories of relatives from so long ago.

Thanks for B.R. :-) Just found your comment from 3 months ago. Lol, I must have missed it when my internet was down. To answer...yes, I make things that I hope will be passed down too. I make each ancestor a memorial scrapbook of their lives. Well, the family members I knew well that is. My grandmother was a one-room schoolhouse teacher who rode her horse 3 miles to the school. (Kinda 'little house on the prairie' hahaha) So, I have really old pictures and stories in there about it. My Dad was our town's fire chief so I made an album to commemorate those years. Stuff like that so that future generations would know more about their family history more than just reading dates and numbers on a genealogy site. I've taken all the ties that were my Dad's, and uncles, and saved out all the red and green ones. With that I made Christmas tree skirts. I have mine out of that, and I made another one for a different family member who knew the men it came from. We both plan on passing these down. Sorry it took me 3 months to find your comment! Thanks again!

It sounds like you have the basis for a really interesting book. Have you ever thought of writing a book?

It is wonderful that you have so many things made by your ancestors. Do you make anything yourself? It sounds like you come from a talented family.

I have a baby dress that was crocheted by my Grandmother for me when I was a baby. I also have some lamps that my Dad made. Other than that, I don't think I have anything else. I like home made things. My husband made a coffee table when he was in school - eons ago lol. We use it in our living room and may one day pass it down to our kids.
