Does Your Boss Have The Right To Tell You That You Can Not Talk About God |
|
In the workplace? My sister and I are having a debate and she says that a boss has the right to tell you not to mention God while you are at work. She says, that if you do, he has the right to fire you. I believe that no one should be able to tell me when and where to talk about God. I would never interrupt a businesss day, but if I am talking about something to a co-worker and I happen to mention God, I do not feel that anyone has the right to censor me. I would not make a big fuss about it, I would simply seek another place of employment. What are your feelings on this?

1. Shaun72 (11882) | 9 months ago | That would upset me. I hope her boss sees differently about talking about God one day before something bad happens to him and he needs God. Of course I am sure he needs to accept God into his life. It sounds really sad to me.

I do feel as though your boss has the right to set standards as far as during working hours. It really shouldnt be a problem if this topic is being discussed during lunch or at break time.

3. TRWilliams02 (225) | 9 months ago | I wouldn't see how he has the right to tell you not to talk about god, but I think he has the right to ASK you not to talk about God. Not everyone believes in "God" so its a tough issue. Think about it this way, atheist parents have taken the pledge of allegiance to court because it mentioned God. The prayer that use to be said before class started was taken out of public schools too. Yes, I believe everyone has the right to speak freely but if its a controversial topic I think its better not to do it in the work place. Take the conversation outside of the work place with respects to others there that may not agree with you.

Rozie37 (7142) | 9 months ago | I do not mean that I would try witnesing to people at work, unless I felt God prompting me to. I just mean in every day casual conversations I might mention a blessing or something.

Reason being: religion is a very heated topic. There may be some in your work place that do not have your beliefs and thus can become offended by the talk. Some can even cosider it harassment. It is perfectly legal.

Rozie37 (7142) | 9 months ago | I was not meaning to try to witness to someone. I was talking about an everyday casual conversation. I would never want to cause a heated arguement at work. I know how offended some people become about the subject of God.

BethsMom24 (817) | 9 months ago | I understand what you were doing and I have no problem with that. I have been in management for 12+ years and I was just giving you the business end of the subject. Companies, while you are on their time, can dictate what you do and the conversations you have. Now, if you are "off the clock" during these discussions then no, they can not dictate that. I don't necessarily agree with these policies however, this is how most companies do business.

5. CatsandDogs (5128) | 9 months ago | There's so much repression in our so called "free speach" that I wouldn't be one bit surprised if that were true what your sister said however, I'd fight back because nobody and I mean nobody is going to make me stop talking about God. It would be like going back to the worst of times when Christians were condemed for admitting to believe in him. Condeme me if they may, it won't stop me.

8. roysville (266) | 9 months ago | I had a boss like that once, no discussions of religion at work. Ironically, we hold mass during his birthdays, company anniversaries, and other occassions. He just want to have it at any other time. For him, business is business, and he wants to separate faith from it.
I resigned after six months.

9. sid556 (10611) | 9 months ago | I think it should be your business just what you talk about on your own time at work. My boss has mentioned that he would like to make it a rule that there is no talk of politics at work. why? because that subject just seems to get people fired up. Religion is the same. I think that the only reason a boss would or should step in is if the talk on such a subject is causing conflict between the workers. Normal, friendly conversations....I wouldn't imagine the boss would be bothered at all and probably wouldn't even know unless someone issued a complaint.
