An Abbreviated form of English used in text messaging and in online chat,sometimes referred to as Netspeak uses LOL as an abbreviation of "Laugh out Loud"..there are many others..do a search online for more info,as there are pages of these things!

Well that is a real blow to my ego! I was thinking so many ladies fancied me and were sending me very friendly messages. Is everybody really sure that it means "laughs out loud"? I need to re-read all my messages where I thought a lady friend was sending me "lots of love" and see what impact that has on the overall meaning.(lol)

It's simply short for 'Laughs out loud'. You may also come across ROTFL (Rolling on the floor laughing) and one or two other less polite versions!
