Have you ever moved into a new home? |
|
My family is planning a big move really soon; not sure of the exact date. We already have the place picked out. And, right now, things are really hectic around the house with all the packing and getting ready.
We've never traveled on a long trip with our daughter before, so this will certainly be a new experience for everyone.
Have you ever moved from one home to another?
What are your best tips for moving time to make the whole process less of a hassle? How do you make the moving experience less stressful for your own children?

1. cher913 (13545) | 8 months ago | we had 2 sets of friends that moved into a brand new home and they both have so many issues that the builders did wrong. like putting the wrong vanity in the bathroom, the cracks on the wall, the windows wont seal right, etc. i would not every buy a brand new home.
the home we bought about 12 years ago was built in the 1970's and we moved here before my daughters started school, so this is really the only neighbourhood they know.

2. jillhill (11660) | 8 months ago | It's been a long time since I have lived in my current home almostt 30 years! That seem unbelieveable...anyway...I found that doing one room at a time helped me be more organized.....marking the boxes and unloading them in the room where they belonged.....My kids were little when we moved and were so excited that it wasn't stressful at all.

3. Archie0 (3139) | 8 months ago | Well yes i have moved out to a new house, and it is really very hectic.we have to keep check of every single and smallest thing to be transfered from the old house.Well i will suggest you to make different bags for different things in your house suppose there should be completely different bag for children clothes and your clothes.differnt bag for shoes and accessories too. make a list of what you going to carry and what you going to transport, see that you write numbers on all your bags which you will transport away, when you about to download them check whther they are in good condition etc. just keep a track of things a bit early to avoid hassels at main times, be sure to keep the first aid on one hand distance itself. hope you enjoy your new home. happy mylotting.

Make sure everything is labeled and that way you can place your things where they need to be easier. I think that you can minimize the stress on your children by making it easier to set up their rooms faster. Pack all of their stuff in one box so when you get to your neww place you can unpack their stuff and keep thier surroundings as familiar as possible. I think that depending on their ages you can let them pack their own things so they know where everyhting is and they can help set up their own rooms. Also pack so you can set things up. As soon as you get to your new place have at least one room where you can set thigns up quickly the best thing is knownig you have a place to retreat to when you are done for the night. Be able to unpack as much of the necessities as possible and make it a place to relax. For example, Pack your daughters room stuff all in one box. little decorations and pictures can be saved for later but make sure all the stuff she loves is in one place so when you get moved in you can set up her room, have all of her favorite toys and furniture that reminds her of "home" where ever that is. Pack the cords ot the tv, dvd and movies together in and be able to unload them, set up your tv, and living room so you can have a place to retreat to once the day is over. WHile your hubby or the movers are unloading stuff you can get to setting up easier without digging through lots of boxes. and then when you are ready to just crash for the night or sit down and relax even if there are boxes all over your room or crammed in the corner, your daughter will feel comfortable with all of her comfort zone stuff nearby and you can retreat to the living area and relax with out worrying about where you packed the remote or your favorite sofa pillow, because you packed them in a place where it would be easy to get out.

5. spalladino (8992) | 8 months ago | Along with the other great advice you've received, since you're going to be going some distance away, make sure that you have a bag of your daughter's favorite toys handy to have with you in the vehicle. Pack a few day's worth of clothes and other necessities in a suitcase or two so they'll be easier to get to once you arrive at your new home. I'm real big on making lists so that nothing is overlooked or delayed. The utility companies need to be dealt with at both your current and your new locations, change of address forms should be completed and delivered to the post office by the day prior to your move so that your mail isn't delayed. Plan to get rid of all perishable food a day or two before you actually move so that you have time to clean out the frig...and leave it open when you go so mold doesn't grow. Our farthest move was from Maryland to Florida. My husband and I transported my teenage daughter, two ticked off cats and one big dog who loves to travel. We planned many pit stops along the way since it was a 20 hour trip and didn't rush. Moving is stressful enough without being in a hurry so plan to take your time and make frequent stops so your daughter gets a break from riding.

6. giftsandbagscom (12032) | 8 months ago | I recently moved into this apartment I live in. I have had a pretty good move this time around as I am always moving. I tagged all my boxes to go to the right rooms. I did the living room and kitchen the first night. I put the beds down and left the boxes for the next day. I went through all the boxes with in one week. It was very easy after I had the living room/kitchen done.

7. moonchild1au (847) | 8 months ago | We moved from Mackay to the Sunshine coast (10 - 12 hour drive) back in October & my daughter was 18 months old at the time. All I did was make sure she had some of her fave toys with her & the rest in the removalist truck. She was still a little stressed but I just made more time for her to make sure she felt at home & within a week, she was right.

8. zoey7879 (1254) | 8 months ago | I've moved into one brand new home.. and the builders made many mistakes. Most things were unlevel and many pipes weren't properly fastened or sealed.
As for moving in general... I have moved 32 different times. No, I'm not a runaway or a foster child or military or any kind of child... Just restless:)

10. Ruthep (5928) | 8 months ago | On the boxes write which room they go in. That way you don't have to open it up before you know where it belongs. We moved when my daughter was 2. It never really seemed to be that big of a deal to her. Just let her know where the place is and answer all her questions. Show her pictures of the place and act like it will be a fun thing. Have stuff in the car that she can amuse herself with. They get bored on long trips and than they get crabby and bug you and you get irritated. So things like that are always good.
