The Department of Homeland Security! The $5.7 billion National Service bill calls for tripling the size of Americorps. Currently that organization has over 70,000 members, which means over 210,000 when Obama's plans for it are completed. We thought the federal budget was getting bloated when Prs. Bush created the Department of Homeland Security, which has around 200,000. But most of those weren't new to the federal budget because the DHS simply absorbed several existing agencies under its umbrella. What The Central Committee just passed into law is a 14,000 person increase in the Federal Government... and a budget increase of $5.7 billion that will have to be increased every year until further notice. So friends and neighbors, this means that either Obama is just off to a good start in his dream of a civilian security force, or this has nothing to do with that and he's still got plans up his sleeve to bring millions more under the Federal Government security blanket.

I would love to know which it is. Is he going to spend billions more on his civilian army. Or is this his civilian army. Personally I think this is too small to be it. He said he wanted them to be just as big our our armed services, and just as well funded. How many people do we have in the armed services and what is their combined yearly budget?

Currently the US Department of Defense has around 2.3 million servicemembers and 700,000 civilian employees. It's budget is $786 billion. The goverment has around 2 million civilian employees total. In other words, to get his wish, Obama will have to create a "civilian security force that more than doubles the current non military federal employment numbers.

I hate to burst Obama and his followers bubbles but I really do not see this plan working. People that were already volunteering will be happy they are now getting some money for it. But it is not enough to really make anyone go out and decide to do it. Plus it is not mandatory (thank god). So there maybe some increase to start out with. But long term I think most people will go right back into their normal routines.
