... kid left in the car ... email this discussion to a friend?

So I go to the Chinese restaurant order my food and wait the ten minutes for it to be done. I walk out the door and see a yellow car parked in the handicap spot windows down, car running, radio blaring. No big deal right … I walk to my car which is parked next to the yellow car and what do I see but a child about 2 years old in the back seat!

I go to the restaurant door and yell in whose yellow car is this. A guy says “its mine”. I said “get you’re a$$ out here and get your kid before I call the police”. He says “I can see him, he’s fine” At this point I am pisssssed! I say again “get out here and get your kid it is neglect to leave your child in a car unattended and I will call the police!”

So he walks out to the car opens the back door then shuts it. I am sitting in my car at this point with the doors locked thinking to myself OMG is this guy gonna kill me or what?!?! (You never know in today’s world and I read/watch the news too much) So he’s just sitting there and I put my window down just a little bit and yell. “I’m not leaving till I know your gonna take that kid in with you to get your food or leave”. So he gets out of the car and gets the kid out and goes into the restaurant.

So my questions are what would you do? If you seen a child in a car alone? Would you say some thing or let it go? Would you walk away? I want all your thoughts on this please!?!?!

You took a big risk confronting a stranger...and one who was so callous as to leave a small child in a vehicle unattended. Personally, I would have called the police from the parking lot. I doubt this was the first or will it be the last time this man leaves that child in the car unattended but, with a police record, he would have been more likely to change his behavior.

I didn't even think about the risk to me when I confronted the owner of the car all I could think of was what would happen to the child if I didn't.

Believe me I was very tempted to still call the police I hope that my saying some thing put enough scare in him.

wow, people like that are just irritating.

There is no chance in hell that i would walk away. I wouldn't even have bothered to call into the restaurant to see whose car it was. I would have just called the police and told them the situation, given them a license plate so if the person left before the police got there, they could still deal with him or her.

If it was an extremely hot day, hell i would have just busted into the car and grabbed the baby and waited for the police to show up. Sure you might get taken to court, but i would rather put up the fight in court that you possibly saved a babies life then watched it die waiting for cops to show up or the irresponsible adult to get back in the car or sit there and argue with you about whether he is paying any attention to the baby or not.

It was actually a really nice day outside and being in the car for 10 mins wouldn't have harmed the child thank God ... Let me say this though... If it had been a normal hot Florida day I would have called the police right away and not even attempted to talk to the parent.

I have to give you credit for taking this stand. I have 5 kids and there are times when I tell my 10 yr. old to watch the kids while I go in to get something. I don't think I would mind if someone told me to get out there because sometimes parents need to be slapped back into reality. I definately wouldn't have left a 2 yr. old in the car at all alone. Give yourself a pat on the back for taking a stand. thumbup

I personally would hate to have to take 5 kids out of the car just to run into a store for a moment! Leaving your 10 year old in charge for 5 mins isn't as big of a deal as leaving just a 2 year old in the car.

When my daughter was younger we lived in PA come winter time I didn't want to take her out of the car if I didn't have to so I would drive to the gas station that had a drive up window. It was about 2 miles more then I needed to drive but that was okay because it ment not having to get her out of the car.

I used to do that too, my younger brother hates those ATM gas run machines and I told him for mother's they come in handy. You don't leave your car or have to take your child out if it is cold. I hated to take my baby out too when it was really cold but sometimes you just had to.

It's like I said to the first responder... I didn't even think about the risk to me all my thoughts were on that child.

With the world as crazy as it is ... I won't let my 2 year old in the fenced in back yard with out me! Now when my neice (8 years old) is at the house I'll let her and my daughter go out back with out me but shes old enough to be able to yell if she sees some one that shouldn't be there or if some thing happened.

All I have to say is the guy got VERY lucky with me because had it been a normal hot Florida day I would have called the police right away!

Yeah I think I would pretty much do what you did. Theres no way he should be leaving a child that lil alone in a car. Let alone with the keys in it. Its like a big calling card to theifs hey look no adults cars running lets still it. Point being put a side hey they may not even notice the kd in the back seat. Then whos to blame. Not the dumb theif. Its the brainless person that left the child like that in the frist place.

myLot reputation of 96/100. ebsharer (2474)   ranked 11 out of 1,895 in have kids  7 months ago

I agree 100%! You know the Shell there on Babcock that has the outside window. I would take Lu there just so I didn't have to get her out of the car (winter time). I'd drive past a gas station just to go to that one! The window was as close to the car as if I was standing outside the car pumping gas.

Hows the girls?

A child that young shouldn't be left in the car for even a second! Can you imagine all the horrible things that could happen? I mean, you look away for one second and the kids are into everything. Leaving one in a car with all kinds of buttons and levers and such? No way. You did the right thing. I would have been tempted to call the police or DCFS anyway. Nothing like a quick home inspection to get the juices flowing.

myLot reputation of 96/100. ebsharer (2474)   ranked 11 out of 1,895 in have kids  7 months ago

Well the child was in a car seat but still kids get into things. I know my daughter (about the same age) can take her seat belt off - not that she does because she knows better but point is if I left her in a car she would surely get out of her seat!

I was very tempted to call the police anyway but hopefully I gave this guy enough of a scare to get his kid out even just for a min.

I would have just called the police on this woman. Chances
are this is not her first time leaving her child in the
car. I am so tired of hearing stories like this and they
are the first ones to cry when something bad happens to their
children. If she would have just taken her child in with her in the
first place she would have little chance of someone taking her child
and doing harm. I wish that more people would just take their kids with
them my daughters are 14 and 12 they still go in the store with me I don't
leave them in the car. I dont get people like this.

myLot reputation of 96/100. ebsharer (2474)   ranked 11 out of 1,895 in have kids  7 months ago

I'm sure he has left his child in the car before I'm sure he will do it again. But hopefully he will think twice before he does. Hey the way I see it is I drive a very common car maybe he will see someone elses and think $hit shes here too!

myLot reputation of 96/100. patriciaqualls (4607)   ranked 149 out of 1,895 in have kids  7 months ago

Yes I hope he will think twice about leaving his kids in the car.
I don't know how people think that is ok don't they realise how
dangerous it is to leave their kids in the car.

myLot reputation of 96/100. ebsharer (2474)   ranked 11 out of 1,895 in have kids  7 months ago

Thanks for the responses! And thanks for not telling me how unsafe it was to confront this guy!

myLot reputation of 96/100. patriciaqualls (4607)   ranked 149 out of 1,895 in have kids  7 months ago

No you did the right thing! I have done that to people as well and I hope that
next time they do think about not leaving their kids in the car.
I really do hope we make a difference. I see little kids sleeping in the back
seat of cars all the time what is wrong with these people. One time I waited until
the lady came back from shopping I was worried someone was going to take her
baby. I just don't get people like this.

i can't imagine what will happen to the kid if you haven't found it.The man is it's father? Even a little pet is not been left alone. Poor kid!

If I were in that situation I would have been bothered too. Imagine leaving a two-year-old alone in a car with the engine running! That's just insane. I would have done the same thing. Some parents are just plain senseless or careless to leave their kids in that risky situation.

myLot reputation of 96/100. ebsharer (2474)   ranked 11 out of 1,895 in have kids  7 months ago

I agree 100% some people shouldn't have kids! I know how much it sucks to get your child out of the car pick some thing up and put the child back in the car it can be a hassel when you are just running in for a moment or some thing but to me it is worth the hassel!

That guy's lucky you didn't report him right away (are you from a state where this is illegal?). That was really brave and I'm glad he didn't make trouble for you. Anyway, do you guys remember that mom whose car (with her kid in it) was stolen from her own driveway? She reported the theft, they found the car, the kid was unharmed, and the mom later found herself charged with negligence or something like that. Apparently, it's against the law to leave a child in the car by himself or herself in that state, even if you're just bringing in the diaper bag and other stuff before getting the baby.

myLot reputation of 96/100. ebsharer (2474)   ranked 11 out of 1,895 in have kids  7 months ago

I don't know if there is an acutaly "law" against it but I do know that The Deparment of Children and Families wouldn't be okay with him leaving his 2 year old in the car! Neglect is illegal and thats just what it is to do some thing like that!
