WHO has said swine flu one step closer to being a pandemic

I've been watching the reports from the World Health Organisation, and they have increased the severity of swine flu to phase 4, which apparently means that the risk of it turning into a pandemic has increased. They have said that there is no point imposing travel restrictions as they can't test for it quickly enough. To me, this suggests even more reason to stop unnecessary travel. Surely it would be better to stop travel for a few days to help prevent the spread now, rather than wait until the whole world has got it. They are leaving it up to individuals to make up their own minds on whether to travel. Do you think this is the best decision?

Didn't we have all this with the bird flu? I can't help thinking that it's just scaremongering, commons sense dictates that we should wash our hands and not to cough and sneeze over people. I find it all disconcerting and have little faith in the government anyhow, if it was so precarious and lethal then surely the government wouldn't be so lax? I can't help but read between the lines, mind you I can be a little paranoid at times but I just think it's a storm in a teacup. In a few years we'll have buzzard flu or elephant flu, sorry to pour jest on it, but in this crazy world you really do need a sense of humour otherwise you'd wallow in doom and gloom that is presented to us on a daily basis.

It's hard to know how any new virus will progress. They can either just run their course or evolve into something more dangerous. Most of the time these things do just fizzle out, but I think that given the fact that there is so much air travel now germs can be spread worldwide very quickly. Anyway let's hope it is just a storm in a tea-cup.

I think we should act now not later. Why wait to impose travel restrictions. Why wait until more fall ill. I agree we should start now and be more aggressive in preventing this flu the best we can in our country.
