question about fluorescent lights |
|
Our bathroom fluorescent lights blew out (we have the old fashioned fixture that is above the medicine cabinet, my husband said 60 is all right and put them in, but I figured 40) so we decided to go back to incandescent lights there. So when I went grocery shopping, all I saw were incandescent lights in chandelier, appliances, fan lights, etc. so I bought one fluorescent light that was 40 w so we could have at least a little light in the bathroom. But when I came home it was equivalent to 150 w incandescent. So I figured that there is a chance that a 40 w fluorescent bulb will blow up so I put it down in the basement where we are allowed the maximum wattage. Oh and I did find some 40 w incandesents at Canadian Tire. So the question is when they say maximum 40 w for this fixture, meaning incandescent lights, does that mean that it will also accept a 40 W fluorescent light?

1. Arkie69 (1099) | 8 months ago | 40 Watts is 40 watts no matter the kind of bulb. The 40 watt fluorescent will be fine and it won't blow up or anything. Just because it puts out more light doesn't mean it pulls more current. It just produces a lot more light with the same wattage.

suspenseful (17136) | 8 months ago | Thanks. I was wondering about that. And at least that will mean I can put one fl bulb when 2 incandescent bulbs will do. That will save me a bit of money in the long run.

suspenseful (17136) | 8 months ago | That's the trouble. I did read the label. Most of the time the florescent bulbs say can be used in place of, and make sure that it is not in one of those globe thingst because it will heat up.

suspenseful (17136) | 8 months ago | Except with flourescent lights you cannot have them where it is damp. So in the basement, unless it is near the stairs, we have to use incandescent lights.

5. marciascott (11745) | 8 months ago | You would think so, Don't they have the wattage on the light bulb? they should. Why don't you try to google it if you don't get an answer, ask the same questions.

suspenseful (17136) | 8 months ago | It was that they said that their 40 watt was equivalent to 150 watt incandescent. So I was wondering whether there was any danger of putting it in the bathroom. They do have lesser wattage bulbs, but we are going to get the bathroom fixed up anyway so we would need to get different lights.

6. dragon54u (9751) | 8 months ago | The whole thing confuses me. I've replaced what I can and it's very hard, as the new lights are so harsh. I've made do by replacing the shades of the lamps to cut the glare--from the thrift store, of course!
I hate the new lights. They are harsh and brittle-looking light and I wish they could make them softer. Sorry I can't answer your question, but I really dislike them. I have a stash of "old" bulbs if I want the luxury of soft light.

suspenseful (17136) | 8 months ago | I like them because it makes me look the same as I do when I am outside in the sunlight. With the incandescent bulbs, I go out after fixing myself up in the house, and then almost die of shock in seeing me in a store front window. I think you can get the cool light fluorescent bulbs.
