What does Arlen Spector offer the Democratic PArty?  |

|  The talk is Arlen Spector thinks he deserves seniority, something he forfeited when switching his party. He has been in Congress since the 80s, he's a lawyer, previous member but he also says that one of the main factors was that he didn't see his chances of winning against Pat Toomey in the upcoming 2010 primaries for the Republican Party.
Does he bring anything other then his own motives?

What he brings is a vote. As an independent, they know his vote isn't a sure thing. That's why they stripped him of his seniority and said they would "revisit" it in 2010. Translation: "Be a good boy and do as your told and you might get to play with the big boys again. We don't tolerate moderates in the Democratic party because we don't have to." | | | | | | |

| |  Besides the obvious, which is just havinganother Democrat, he also brings experience and the fact that he has been listed as one of the ten best US senators in just about every poll taken.
What he saw was that his career was going to end because he could be drummed out in the primary by his own party. to his credit, he has admitted that he was notready to see things end that way and itwas a reason for switching parties.
A recent poll here in Pennsylvania indicates that Spector will slaughter Toomey. However if they run Tom Ridge, they have a chance (uphill but still a chance) of
defeating Arlen Specter. Problem is that Tom Ridge is another moderate, pro choice Republican. In other words, the only chance the Republicans have to retain a senate seat in Pennsylvania is to run a clone of the man they got rid of. Talk about a Pyhric (spelling?) victory.
