To tag or not to tag

Occasionally I forget to add a tag to my discussions. Often times those discussions may go for a long time with out a response because they are not showing up in the additional areas they normally would if I had added a keyword tag to them. I just commented in a discussion started by a friend and realized she had not added any tags which was limiting the amount of responses she would ultimately get. The more detailed your tags the more people will see your discussion. I don't always add tags to other people's discussions but as an afterthought I added one this time and when the page reloaded I noticed my tag was the only one. Do you add a tag when you respond to a discussion?

I tag when I start my own discussions, when I respond or comment and also when I see discussions with no tags even though I may not respond.

I may not respond. You are not responding but adding tags, interesting. So, have you ever repent that you have entered a wrong tags for a discussion. Like, instead of typing "war", it is written as "war"?

I dont often add tags to other's discussions, but I do sometimes. Usually when I notice that there arent any there. But I dont often look! I have heard several people comment that the tags can really make a difference for the number of responses. How is this? I dont pay attention to the tags at all! I have noticed that if you put a discussion in a category rather than general discussion, you will get far more responses. It seems to me that tags are only useful if someone is searching for something. Is there another way to use them?

Look to the right of this discussion--- There you will see 'similar discussions' to this one depending on which tags are added here. This gives other discussions extra views. Likewise THIS discussion will be seen on the right of those. Tags are important for this reason too.

...and when an old discussion gets a new comment or response it gets 'bumped' to the top of that list on whichever page it happens to fit into depending on the tags (just another piece of info for any that happen to be reading here )

I noticed the discussions listed in the right margin a while back. It's another way to find more discussions and friends to respond to yours.

Honestly, I forget to tag, but I try to make my subject such that I will get the responses I want - of course, I have hundreds of friends, so I've always got 10 or 20 who might respond.

Oh, I had a few early ones that had zero responses, but someone asked if we'd post our discussions and she'd respond - and she did, so I could resolve them.

That is good that you don't have any discussions with 0 responses.

There are times I forget to add tags to my own so I go back and add them on the pages like I would if I had forgotten to add tags to a response I made on another's discussion. Tags do help a lot in the long run but at the same time, you've really got to be careful how you tag, and sometimes it's better to have five relevant ones you've made yourself or lest someone will unknowingly or intentionally tag to make the discussion seem different. Well I hope you have a wonderful day and happy tagging!

I hadn't actually thought of the possibility of tags being used to direct people to another person's discussion, but tags being used like that is just wrong. I hope more people will take tags seriously, although they can be very confusing! Opinions differ and so does understandings so when it comes to tagging, sometimes what you meant a discussion to be about, and what it ends up being about are two different things.

I think it's best if you can come up with your own and if you can come up with 5 good ones.

It is definitely better to do them yourself. Someone added a crazy and random tag to one of my discussions which made no sense at the time but now I wonder if it was an attempt to direct traffic to their own discussion.

As for me, I always add a tag to a discussion, be it mine or others. Reason being is that I use to add comments to other's discussion and if I will not add tag to that discussion, it will ask me to add every time, I will add comment to it. You are right, the more tag we will give, more chance it to be seen by other mylotters.

There are so many more opportunities for a discussion to be seen if the right tags are used.

You must be talking about me? I rarely tag my discussions. I never really even think about putting tags on them. I didn't know they were important until I saw this. I guess it would make sense that that is how someone would find your discussion if they went searching. It's a wonder anyone answers my discussions. LOL

I think we get into the habit of choosing "skip" so much that we do the same when we start new discussions.

I have on occassion added a tag to a discussion when I have responded, though definitely not all the time. I haven't even had much time to respond to any discussions lately either here or gather and with my new granddaughter due the first of June, I will probably even have less time than I do now.

the only time I tag someone else's discussion is when I report it for violating guidelines I do that so other people will realize it is a violation and report it as well beyond that I dont bother with tags

Hi Canellita, I think tagging or not has not much effect on popularity of discussion thread. I used to faithfully tag every single thread I started, but not great responses to them. Recently I get lazy to tag any discussion thread I started, and find that the most popular thread attracts more than 120 responses. I guess it's the way the question is asked, when you start a discussion with "what do you think", it will attract response, if you ask "would you do this or that", not many people will answer. I think people are more comfortable sharing thoughts than make commitment.

Hi Canellita, that's true. Since I'm so lazy to tag the discussion, mylotters who respond will tag them for me. Quite interesting to see how they tag the discussion, some use long tailed keywords too!

I don't think that tags affect popularity only categorization. The tags help people find discussions related to their interests they might not have found otherwise. How helpful the tagging of your own discussions is towards them being responded to depends on who is responding and how they approach locating discussions to participate in.

I haven't fully utilized MyLot's search functions in my short time of being here, so I didn't take into account the importance of the tag system. i have looked over the FAQs. Still though, didn't think tagging was that big of a deal/ Now I kinda feel bad about not tagging every discussion I reply to. I've some across some interesting topics that got only a handful of responses. If I had taken the time to tag said topics, maybe they would have gotten a butt load of replies. I have been thinking about tagging things I don't reply to. Something I can't think of a good, or lengthy response, but was still interested in what was posted. I think I'll make it a habit to tag things after I post at least ten or so times daily. That'll be a good little routine to break up the monotony of posting responses.

I don't think the length of responses is affected by tagging. Some people have a lot to say and some only have a little but the tagging at least helps the discussion show up in the various places that myLot uses to suggest similar discussions.

Yes it is necessary to add tag in the topics that you create . Because it helps in getting indexed , also shows in the similar topic area . Comes very handy while you search for any particular things . Which all together draws more people towards it and get more response . But i often feel so lazy to add all the tags lol , but its a bad practice not to add.

It really makes a difference. There seems to be a limit because when I added the tags for this discussion only a few of them appeared.

When you start a discussion you can add up ro 10 tags but only the first 5 will show. Then, as other tags are added, the ones added the most will be seen on the left. The first to the left is the one added the most, the second is the second most added and so on.

Tags help your discussions be put into categories to make them easier to find when people are searching for discussions. The next time you start a discussion enter at least one tag. When the page reloads scroll down and you will see similar discussions with the same tags.

There needs to be a system where smart software can do the tagging automatically. Seems kind of archaic to me - to have to highlight your own discussion. Doesn't it? Kind of like we'll look back and be like remember when...?

I agree Canellita! An automatic system would give priority to certain words whereas if we choose the tags we can decide which words are more relevant.

I would much rather tag my own since computers can't distinguish context.

I think it is also important to use as few words as possible like keywords for SEO.
