Iris Beauty

I hope to have irises next year, they are so beautiful. My neighbor has some beside his front porch, purple, but they only lasted a couple of weeks. I wonder if they'll bloom again?

I'd love to have them inside. I think I'd have to use the staggered method. Plant the bulbs at different depths so that they bloom weeks apart. You might try that.

Irises are one of my favourite flowers. I can't tell definitively from the photo whether it's a yellow Bearded Iris or what we call a Yellow Flag. They both have fairly similar flowers but the Bearded Iris has a larger flower (which comes in many different colours ranging from deep purple through blues to pale yellow) with a 'beard' on the petals near the centre, broader leaves with a bloom on them that makes them appear greyish and prefers a dry soil.

The Yellow Flag (Iris pseudacorus) is a wild flower (here in the UK) and grows on the margins of ponds and lakes. The flower is smaller and always yellow. I seem to remember that the leaves were used to cover the floors of houses to sweeten the air but, since I can't find any reference to this at the moment, I may be confusing it with the Sweet Rush.

Yes that is a yellow iris. Iris means rainbow. I am learning so much today from doing searches for you. I did find some tips also about Iris's. I hope they are of help. I hope I am not breaking any mylot rules with posting things from sites about these things for you, if I am please let me know so I can stop.
Iris Plant Care
Apply a thin layer of compost around the base of plants each spring, leaving the rhizome exposed.
As flowers fade, cut back the flower stalks to the base of the plant.
To encourage a second bloom on reblooming varieties, promptly remove faded flowers and maintain consistent watering throughout the summer.
In autumn, trim away dead foliage and prune back healthy leaves to a height of 4 to 5 inches.
Once the soil has frozen, apply a layer of mulch to help prevent roots from heaving out of the soil during alternate freezing and thawing.
If heaving occurs, don't try to force plants back into the soil. Instead, cover rhizomes and exposed roots with soil.
Divide bearded iris every 4 to 5 years, preferably in late summer. Each division should have one or two leaf fans. Older rhizomes that have few white feeding roots should be discarded.

Oh what a beauty and yes it is a Iris. It is one of my favorite types of flowers. I have purple ones and it is weird as they smell like .. get this .. GRAPES! I love to smell them! lol Im hoping to get some yellow ones and some other colored ones next year to add. This year we are just working on a new vegey garden and stuff so I dont have much time to plan another flower garden.

The only iris I have is in my eye, and it is no where as pretty as yours!

You sure are handy when it comes to growing things Grandpa Bob! Here in Cairo, you don't get to see too many naturally growing flowers and plants like these. My Wife and I just saw a wonderful cactus garden when walking to the stire this morning though and were very impressed. I love Iris flowers also and the one you've shared the picture of is beautiful.

I used to have 10 or more different variety/colors of iris' but afraid lost the last of them in the last move... From here on out I'm keeping my plants in pots and close to me. I so look forward to having a home of my own again in the future.

Iris are very pretty flowers. I would love to have some of them when we have a place we can plant flowers if they will grow here, as well as impatients. I also Love Lilacs as well. There is nothing better than having the satisfaction of growing some flowers to help decorate your place for sure.

my iris plants are blue. mistakenly, the first year i planted them, i didnt realise that when they are planted the corms have to be planted shallowly, so you can see them. i buried mine too deep and they didnt flower at all. but now this year they are are in bloom and they look brilliant!! the best of it is, they were a free gift from one of the plant catalogues i buy a lot of my plants from.
