What is your view on driving while talking on a cell-phone?  email this discussion to a friend?

First off, I would like to add clarification to the topic. I mean a standard cell-phone. Im not talking about using bluetooth headsets, or in-car bluetooth calling. I mean holding your cellphone up to your ear with one hand while trying to drive.

I strongly feel that this should be against the law. Many accidents of many magnitudes are caused by driver-distraction. Most of these "driver distractions" are their cellphones. When talking on the cellphone, having only one hand on the wheel, I feel that drivers can not put their full focus on the road, and what is ahead of them. In emergency situations, the driver cannot react fast enough either.

Personally, I have a big problem with this. Strathcona County is going to be putting a ban on talking on cellphones while driving, but only on some roads. Roads like provincial hi-ways will not have this ban put in place. Just the roads within the city I would assume. That is a good step. That means city council has to listen to the ever-growing call of the people and their demands. I really hope it gets to be a provincial ban, then spreads to every other province in Canada.

Is it so hard to let the person calling leave a voicemail? Is it so hard to pull over if you must answer it?

It is very hard to let voice mail just answer it. Also it is hard to just pull off and lanswer it.

But It is hard to drive and hold the phone at the same time. I do agree that is wear most accidents happen. you get caught up in a conversation loose thought and dont react in enough time.

They are trying to get the law passed hear.

My other thoughts were when this first came out. What about the smokers taking both hands off the wheel to light a cigaret and one hand on the wheel while smoking? Just curiouse I know its not the same but is it jursdiction?

If the call is important enough, I think they can leave a message. The only time when that is hard would be during rush-hour traffic. Im sure it isnt that hard to pull a right turn into a mcdonalds parking-lot for instance.

That is a very valid point. They do take their hands off, but they arent really being distracted. Once it is lit, they either keep it in their mouth, and have both hands readily available for the steering wheel, or they keep it between their fingers with both hands still readily available for the steering wheel.

I dont mean to sound like I support this, but it is a valid point. It is a distraction, on a much lower level.

I heard this news report on a man who was driving, and dropped a cigarette on the floor of his car. Instead of getting a new one out of the package, he decided to go rummaging through the bottom of the car going full speed (I think it was 60km/h). He does not realize it, but he is headed straight into an intersection, and flies right through the red light and completely annihilated the vehicle he struck.

I do believe a lot of accidents are caused by cell phones. we just had one hear wear I guy was in the middle of texting and hit a telephone pole. police saw a incomplete text and figured that's what it must of been.

I hope they do set the law about cell phones being used while driving. Also people I know that smoke only have one had on the wheel while driving cigarette in the other.

Hi Canowyrms,

I totally agree with you. This is one of the most annoying things there is. I get so ticked off when someone is driving too slow or just being careless because they are talking on their cell phone. It is dangerous and should be against the law. I don't even understand why they want to. I don't even answer mine when I am driving. Whoever it is can wait till I am at my destination. There is nothing worth causing an accident and maybe injuring someone or even worse killing them.

Thanks for the post:)

Thank YOU for your post!

I feel the same way! People are too focused on their conversations to drive properly!
Its annoying when you get someone backing up an entire lane because they are on their cell phones while driving. My brother yesterday was nearly rear-ended because the driver was on his cell-phone. the driver was so close, that if my brother had not moved forward a foot or so, there would have been damage. and my brother has a baby just over 1 and a half years old!!

I am glad to hear that you have common sense and can wait a few minutes to call the fellow back.

I actually do believe that we should follow the laws that have been placed and not use a cell phone while driving. I know that this law has passed in most places and is being heavily enforced and it is in my opinion a very good safety measure that has been placed. An accident can happen in a split second when the driver is either reaching for their phone or even dialing. The best way to avoid putting our lives or someone else's life in danger is to either not use the phone while driving entirely or to use a hands-free bluetooth headset.

That is a very good statement. It really can happen in a split second. Even at city speeds. Bluetooth hands-free kits are debatable, but definitely a lot safer than a cell-phone user.

i personally think that it is a little irresponsible to drive while chatting on the phone, it is better to pull over to the side of the road. i say this because if you are on the phone this means that you are only using one hand to drive, and even if you are a great driver, there are other drivers on the road and some of them are not so great. so it is important that you have both hands free in the case of you needing to steer yourself out of the way of danger, accidents can happen in a split second.

To be honest ts not the most smartest thing to do. But all of us are urged to grab the phone and answer it whereever we are. Even with rules on not talking whilst driving dont prove that effective, people talk handsfree now. So bottom line is if you are going to talk on the phone whilest driving, your going to do it irrespective of laws or whatever. i guess whats will urge the driver to stop and pull over to talk on the phone might be curtiacy and safety for other users.

That is one of the very worst driver distractions. Granted there are many others but this is one a person can control. To me, it's silly and dangerous for people to continue doing it. Nobody needs to yak that bad.

I'm looking forward to see this law passed everywhere. If you really need to take calls while you are in a car get a hands free device. They are easy enough to get and you can get an inexpensive model. There are just too many highway deaths because someone was juggling the phone talking and try to drive at the same time.

I'm strongly against driving while talking on a cell-phone.Because the driver can not concentrate on driving. This is very dangerous, many accidents happened due to this. In China this is forbidden by law.But still many drivers don't abide by the law.I hope the regulatory department will punish or fine the drivers who talking on phone while driving more seriously.

i think talking on the phone or texting while driving should prohibit as it can cause accident many accident that had happen due to cellphone using while driving. just to make sure your safe in the road you should not use your phone while your driving, because its either you or other people might get hurt or even tragic incident will happen so lets be safe and no phone using while driving.
happy mylotting!!!
