How often are you asked for ID when you pay with a credit card?

I have really noticed that stores/cashiers are very inconsistent with IDing when you use a credit card. In bigger cities I seem to be asked more often and when we were on holidays in Vegas I just handed my ID to the cashier with my card. But I find it kind of surprising that most places around where we live do not ask for ID.
I was in a store the other day and paid with my Mastercard. The lady asked to see my ID and I didn't have it since I had just changed my name on my driver's license and all I had was my interim (paper) license with my new name. She just shrugged and said 'that's fine then'. So a piece of paper with no photo and a different name and signature is good enough?! A few times since I changed my name on my license I've had the same reaction. One girl even said 'whatever, I just have to ask'. Wow!
How often are you asked for ID where you live? Have you ever had a store refuse to take your card because you didn't have ID or it didn't match the card?

Nobody checks ID anymore, I don't think. Except government agencies. My ex had his debit card stolen once with his picture right there on the front. The thief spent hundreds of dollars and nobody ever once checked the picture to the cardholder!

I'm rarely asked to see ID, and I don't have my name signed on the back of the card either. What kills me is when a cashier at Walmart does decide to ask... by the time the register tells the cashier to compair signatures (which is the point where she asks to see the card, then ID) the transaction has already gone through and the reciept already printed. One time, just for giggles, I told the cashier I didn't have my ID. She was obviously not happy, but what could she do? The transaction had gone through. So she just gave a bit of a groan to let me know she was unhappy about it, then handed me the reciept and off I went.

What really surprised me is the two times I didn't have ID - both at the same store - they just said 'whatever'. I couldn't believe that! And asking for ID after the transaction already went through is like asking for ID after you've already served someone a drink - it's too late.

When I used to cashier and wait tables and have to accept people's credit cards often, unless I knew them as a regular or a friend, etc, I would always ask for ID. Some people got mad, but it was for their own protection. Others appreciated this.
However, when I go shopping and use my card, it's very VERY rare that anyone ever even asks for my ID. I would prefer them to ID everyone, especially in today's economy. I even have written on the back of my card "See ID." ... No one really even pays attention. They are supposed to at least match the signature on the back of the card with the one you sign on the receipt, but they don't even do THAT. -- That's why you are supposed to sign the back of the card in the first place!
I work at a bank, and of course we provide debit cards with credit card logos as most banks do. I see SO MUCH fraud every week and tons of affidavits filed for stolen credit cards or purchases the customer didn't make. EVERYONE should be required by law to provide identification when purchasing with a credit card, that's just my opinion.

Hmmm, that's horrible. Some people have no common sense.
Thanks for the best response!

I absolutely agree. A few years ago at work someone took a credit card number over the phone (a no no in the first place) and the owner of the card filed a complaint saying they didn't authorize the charges. Since we had no signature (and the dummy who took the number didn't even ask for a last name) our store got stuck with the charges. And rightly so, it was totally our fault.

I am finding that more and more places are asking for ID when you use a credit card, sometimes even when I used my debit card I got asked for ID which seemed odd to me but hey. My exchange student got carded and she didnt know what to do since she isn't from here. SHe didn't think her Italian ID would work, but we found out that it does.
