What time does the library open? |
|
I wanted to go to the library today. I figured it would open around 9 or 10. I called to make sure.
Apparently my library doesn't open until 1:30 today! Ridiculous!!
I think it's because of all the budget cuts. Ugh!
What time does your library open? Is your library suffering from budget cuts too?

1. muscles4me (8552) | 7 months ago | That is wierd. I thought they always opened at 9:00 am. I really don't know if they are suffering from budget cuts or not. Maybe there is something special going on like a meeting for the staff but I sure can not see why it would be a meeting that would take more than 4 hours!

2. froggieslover (1091) | 7 months ago | Our local library doesn't open here until 11:00 am. Most of the businesses here don't open until 11..we are in a smaller town so I guess they feel there is no need to open until 11 and I don't think they are open on the weekends either, i could be wrong but I believe that is how it is.

6. macdingolinger (1177) | 7 months ago | I think it could very likely be because of the budget cuts. In Chicago the library opens early. Where I am right now, there isn't even a library. I have to drive 20 miles to the closest library. I know it closes at 8 p.m. but I am not sure when it opens. I know that 1:00 is way too late for a library to open!

7. Jennlk84 (2273) | 7 months ago | wow! That seems so late to be opening. I don't visit the library where I'm currently living because it's downtown and not at all convenient to get to. I'm hoping that once we move I can start visiting the library again. The library in the town I grew up in (which is TINY and probably gets very few people in it each day) opens at like 9am. And they stay open until 5 or 6. I think some nights even later.

8. GreenMoo (2632) | 7 months ago | Mine is open normal sounding hours, but half the time you can't find anyone to help you. Quite a few times now I've taken books back and got so fed up waiting for someone to show that I've just left them on the counter. I don't like doing that just in case someone else comes along and takes them whilst they are still my responsibility, but I'm not going to hang about all day waiting.

9. additional001 (110) | 6 months ago | I live in a small town... I know our library hours are more like "bankers hours". Honestly I don't even bother to try to go to our local library anymore. I'm visually impaired though and as such I take advantage of a program in the U.S. done by the Library of Congress. It's called Talking Books. My books come on 4 sided cassette tapes. These are not served out of every public library but they are served out of selective libraries (in bigger cities). The nearest one to me is not that far and I know they have AWESOME hours. It's something like 10am to 10pm which is almost unheard of now.
Here is my take on libraries and the plight they face. I think that libraries are pretty much nearing extinction. In fact, I think the only reason's libraries are not extinct is because of publishers and copyright laws. I do however think that if it wasn't for this libraries would be virtual by now. Like you would login and be able to read or download a digital file that would have a check out date and a valid till date... after that you would need to virutally re-check out the book/magazine etc. Let's face it... the economy is just another strike that's causing the scaling down of book purchases, library staff, and library funding. The internet had dealt the heaviest and hardest blow to the public library system.
Remember how I said that there would be "virtual" libraries and that the books would be digital? Is anyone here familiar with the Kindle? If you have not go to http://www.amazon.com and you will see them. These are going to replace your libraries. Not only that but I give it 10-20 years these will replace the need for published textbooks in schools. They are already capable of supporting books, blogs, newspapers, and magazines. I think its just a matter of time.
It's hard for me to say if this is a good thing or a bad one.... I can see the advantages and disadvantages of the Kindle... but reguarless of approval or not I think the change is coming.
