Katrina survivors get needed help |
|
It was very consoling to me when I read an article in this morning's Washington Post about Katrina survivors getting a chance to buy homes for as little as one dollar. It was only a few days ago that I heard on the news that FEMA stated that on June 1, they would be free to begin eviction proceedings. Many of these displaced people have not bounced back from losing their homes in the 2005 hurricane which hit Louisiana, and some agree that more should have been done to help them to rebuild their homes or relocate. The Obama administration is promising to take up the slack and get these peopled settled. Have you been following this story at all? I have been due to a keen interest in Louisiana.http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2009/06/02/AR2009060203897.html?g=0 The above link will take you to the story if you would like to read it.

I also feel positive about the fact that these units will not be sitting vacant after evictions. I do hope the case by case help is there for those physically or mentally unable to make any choice or do anything.

2. Aurone (2545) | 6 months ago | I know New Orleans is still having a tough time. I have thought about going there and teaching myself. I feel for those people we should have had them settled by now, four years is a long time not to have a home.

worldwise1 (6079) | 6 months ago | I have been following events closely, stephcjh, because New Orleans has always been very important to me for some reason. I can't explain it since I've never even been there for a visit. Those people deserve whatever it takes to make them whole again.

4. xParanoiax (4933) | 6 months ago | I hope it's better help than we got after our house fires. We got sold an ancient trailer that didn't even have heat until a year later -- in Ohio.
I'm not complaining, it was enough to keep us alive, and it was donated to the red cross which they sold to us for a buck. Someone gave us what they had. I appreciate that.
I'm just saying that I hope the government, who has more reach than the Red Cross, can help them more.

worldwise1 (6079) | 6 months ago | I believe the main reason for all the delays can be attributed to FEMA's mishandling of the entire situation from the start. It actually took days for them to get fresh water in for the people. Many people are laboring under the false notion that all the victims were poor and lazy people but that just wasn't true. Many hard-working folks lost their homes and have become displaced as a result.

General_Spacey (1194) | 6 months ago | Here in Springfield, I know that 2 churches helped over 50 families total move here after Katrina. None have moved back. I want to thank FEMA for the 2 dentists, 5 doctors, including one heart specilist, and all of the others who moved here from New Orleans. I think the city/county did a "study" and found that out of over 1,000 households that moved here temporary; about 800 stayed.
