I love my brother |
|
When my brother and I were little, my mother was raising us on her own. We had to go to a lot of babysitters but back in those days there wasn't much in the way of daycares since it was mid to late 60's. My mom found a babysitter that lived across the street from us. We would go over every morning and stay all day. The babysitter wasn't the nicest of people. She had a bunch of foster children as well and babysat her grandson too. One day, she got angry with me and made me go stand out in the snow for hours. The snow was deep as I was only about 4 years old. I cried and cried until an older woman down the street saw me and got me back into the house where it was warm. I didn't have a coat on by the way. I wasn't allowed to put it on. What I didn't know is that my brother got himself in major trouble as well. He was trying to get me back inside and the babysitter was threatening him the whole time telling him that if he said anything to our mother she would do bad things to us and her the next time we came back. He was only about 6 at the time. I didn't know until a few years back what she had done to him. My brother, even that young, did everything he could to protect his little sister. My question is, would you protect your siblings in the same manner even if it meant that you would get in big trouble for it?
This is something that I will never forget my brother doing. I truly look up to him still because he always did things like that. Even though we fought like cats and dogs, he was still there protecting me from everyone else.

A point given, my niece and nephew, 7 years apart in age, did not get along at all. Honestly, I tended to side with my niece, as my nephew was very hyper and very bratty. Anyhow, they were staying with my sister in law in a big city, a far cry from the country life they were used to. Anyhow, the sister in law had left them in care of a babysitter and the babysitter had taken the kids somewhere, I don't know where, but the nephew went into his little wild antics. According to my niece the babysitter told the nephew repeatedly to calm down, when he wouldn't she gave him one last warning, settle down or he was going to be kicked out of the car. Of course, my niece thought the babysitter was kidding. But when she pulled the car over to the side of the road and dragged my nephew out of the car and left him on the sidewalk my niece freaked out. The next stop at a redlight my niece jumped from the car and ran to her brother. Neither one of the kids knew where they were, didn't even know how to get hold of their mother. Another sister was involved to. She was a year older than the boy, the oldest sister had to do what she felt was safest and that was leaving the little sister to care for the little brother. It was really surprising to the mother as she looked at her oldest daughter as being very self centered and not caring at all for her brother or sister. She learned something new that day.

ddhawkins63 (339) | 7 months ago | That is a wonderful story. Thank you for sharing. My kids are the same way as well. What did the mother do about the babysitter? Did she know this person well or was it someone that she didn't know. Brothers and sisters have to stick together sometimes. My brother used to hold my legs in the water so that I would have to only use my arms to keep my head above water. Not for a short period of time either. My arms would soon get so tired but he wouldn't let go until I absolutely couldn't hold up any longer. Mean I tell you haha.... He could mess with me but nobody else better! Hooray for older siblings!

My boyfriend has an older brother and younger sister. There are seven years between each of them. They have an extremely good relationship.

ddhawkins63 (339) | 7 months ago | That is so awesome. Actually, we didn't ever tell her. The lady that saw me outside told my aunt, my aunt called my grandmother and she called my mother. We had a new sitter the next day. We thought that if we told that this woman would do some great harm to us. That is the effect that adults have on children. It is terrible that adults can abuse thier power so much. But she didn't get away with it in the end. She was a foster parent as well. I felt sorry for those kids. Me, my mom and brother often talk about it now. I sometimes still cry over it beleive it or not and that was over 40 years ago. How someone can be so mean I will never know.
I did go back to this woman years later, when I turned 18. I went to tell her what I thought of her, but in the end, I let it go. She was a frail old lady who was paying the price through loneliness and I really don't think that she knows what she did was wrong. She is the reason that I never put my kids in daycare. I didn't want to take a chance on them having to remember something like that for the rest of their lives.

dragon54u (9544) | 7 months ago | Your mom and your family did a wonderful job with you, and you see how precious you were (and are) to them when they immediately pulled you out of that situation.
I doubt the woman knew it was wrong, she was probably raised the same way. But in doing what she did, she possibly saved your children from abuse since you won't leave them in daycare. Everything happens for a reason, I truly believe that. Your children are blessed to have a mother that doesn't want them parked in daycare but it's a shame the lesson had to be learned so painfully.

4. Canellita (3214) | 7 months ago | Let me put it this way, that woman would never have threatened either of us again. I am the oldest and if someone had done something like that to my younger brother they would still be having nightmares about me today.

ddhawkins63 (339) | 7 months ago | Yes, I understand where you are coming from. This was when we were very young. My brother hadn't even started school yet. She is dead now and she lived out the rest of her life pretty much lonely. I don't know, if we were older, it might have been different, but for the age we were, my brother did everything he could to help me, even at his own risk. Older siblings are the best. He still hasn't stopped looking out for me and I am 45 years old haha.
