Jesus in Jeans...What do you think about this?  email this discussion to a friend?

I was wondering about what everyone thought about this.

If you haven't heard, a church in England used about 35,000 pounds, I believe, to build a statue dubbed "Jesus in Jeans" in an attempt to modernize Jesus and, I think, to make him more accessible to younger people. Here's a picture:

http://thebeattitude.file...

I think this is just kind of creepy and, personally, I think it goes too far. I mean, I was baptized Methodist, but I'm not really a Christian anymore and even I think it's slightly offensive. What's wrong with Jesus just being Jesus? Why does he have to be modernized?

I realize that differently people have different beliefs (heck, I'm one of those people, LOL!). But to me it just seems like a bit of a crazy idea. I think I would prefer to believe in Jesus as Jesus, not as some modern, hype teenager. With some of the teenagers I see lately, that idea kind of scares me. o_0 Obviously not all teenagers (since I am one, that would be kind of strange), but a lot of recent teenagers.

Anyway, I was wondering what everyone else thought about this new statue? Yay or nay? Thumbs up or thumbs down?

I'm on the fence. I understand what you mean...why can't Jesus just be Jesus...but I think of it differently. And maybe this was not the churches intention with the statue, but these are my thoughts and interpretations of the story and image:

Jesus doesn't discriminate. I was just thinking of this the other night while praying -- well, God gave me this idea, is a better way of putting it, lol. Jesus is Emo, He's Hip-Hop, He's Country/Hillbilly, He's Upperclass, He's a Hobo. Now if I left it at that, you'd probably think I'm crazy...Jesus, homeless? Pfft. But what I mean by that is...He does not care what you are or where you came from. He doesn't care how you dress or speak or walk. He accepts anybody who is willing to accept Him. And basically, that's the message i get from this statue. What's wrong with kids or teens looking up at a statue of Jesus in bluejeans and a white tee and say, "Hey, isn't He cool? Yea, that's my Savior." Jesus can be cool too. That's just how I see it.

And again, the church might not have been trying to convey that message. But, sometimes it doesn't matter what you mean to convey....everything can be understood differently. If that makes sense. :)

myLot reputation of 95/100. phyrre (1259)   ranked 112 out of 19,259 in questions & answers  3 years ago

I definitely agree with your interpretation as Jesus can be anything, and I like the way you describe it. It doesn't matter who you are for Jesus to accept you and I agree that that's an important concept.

I dunno, I just don't think that your savior should be "cool". Well, I wouldn't mind them being cool, but I think it's weird to need there to be a statue. It's like bragging about who's father is better. "My savior is cooler and more hype than yours". That seems to be the message that it's spreading to me, but that's just my way of looking at it. There are plenty of others. xD

I agree, though, that it doesn't matter what the church conveys, but that it really depends on how people interpret it. ^_^

"To each his own" as it goes, right? I see it as being proud of having a Savior like Jesus, not really bragging. And by pride, I don't mean in the bad sense. All emotions are two-sided: God's feelings or Satan's feelings. And I believe you can be proud of some things. Jesus is one of them. Not in the sense of....oh, I own Him, or anything. But proud of what He does and Has does throughout history. I do understand how it could be considered bragging, though. But hey, if I brag about anything, might as well be about my Lord & Savior and not myself, amirite? ;)

myLot reputation of 95/100. phyrre (1259)   ranked 112 out of 19,259 in questions & answers  3 years ago

LOL! Well, I can't argue with that! Of all the negative things you can brag about nowadays, your savior is definitely one of those positive things that you certainly have the right to brag about.

And I know you didn't mean it as they would be bragging about it, that's just what it comes off to me. I'm not sure why. Maybe it's because I'm a pessimist at heart? xD

I agree with your thoughts that we don't need to modernize Jesus portraying Him to be wearing Jeans. Biblical dress standard will not change because people change. I believe that it is the people who need to change and NOT Jesus. And therefore, it is a mockery to Christianity. Young people will never be transformed in such a way. I believe that the Word of God - the Bible and God Himself can change lives and not a religion!lol

myLot reputation of 95/100. phyrre (1259)   ranked 112 out of 19,259 in questions & answers  3 years ago

Well, I'm not sure if it's really a mockery to Christianity. I mean, I understand where they're coming from by trying to make people see that Jesus is open to everyone and anyone.

Then again, I don't believe in the Bible as a religious text, so I really can't comment on that. But I don't think there was a "Biblical" dress standard, either, it was just what people were wearing at the time...lol.

The Bible clearly speaks about WE SHOULD NOT SYMBOLIZE HEAVEN OR ITS BELONGINGS..and by just going around trying to creat a 'christ in jeans' then what next? 'christ in bathing suite'? so there should be a suddent halt to that..its not GOOD!

myLot reputation of 95/100. phyrre (1259)   ranked 112 out of 19,259 in questions & answers  3 years ago

Like I've already said, I don't believe in the Bible anyway, so I can't really comment on that aspect, not to mention that I haven't exactly read the entire thing, only bits and pieces.

But let me ask you this...do you believe it's ok to depict Christ on the cross? I'm just curious.

myLot reputation of 76/100. ra1787 (352)   ranked 3,965 out of 19,259 in questions & answers  3 years ago

Well bible says a lot of things but i don't think that everything should be taken litterally, because if we did so we couldn't eat shellfish and would still have slaves.
I don't believe in religions but i have my faith, anyway if those people want to have a jesus in jeans i don't see nothing wrong with that.

I am not christian, as stated above, but anyway the typical image of jesus is with the typical dressed of his time, i don't think it could be offensive to represent him with the typical dresses of a modern man.

myLot reputation of 95/100. phyrre (1259)   ranked 112 out of 19,259 in questions & answers  3 years ago

I'm not Christian, either, and I do have my own beliefs, too, so I understand where you're coming from. :)

Thank you for your views. I know there are a lot of people that won't get offended by it, but some will, I'm sure. ^_^ I'm not offended by it, I just think it's kind of strange.

I am not a christian and i do not think many will get offended by this act of dpeicting Jesus in Jeans. But at the same time some people will get offended by this act. I am not sure how it will be taken in that country. Depicitng Jesus in a modern way is some what a good idea to be appreciated and there is nothing to harm anyone by this act.

I really agree with you on that.I think its disrepectful to jesus christ.I believe that he accept us regardless of who we are and our walks of life.We shouldnt discriminate but why would a church want to modernize him he wants us to be close to him but come on is that really necessary.jesus in jeans plz.

myLot reputation of 95/100. phyrre (1259)   ranked 112 out of 19,259 in questions & answers  3 years ago

I completely understand your viewpoint. If Jesus is supposed to accept us for who we are, shouldn't we be able to accept him without needing him to look and act like us?

I don't agree with it. By presenting Jesus in this way, "in an attempt to modernize Jesus", "to make him more accessible to younger people," you flirt with the idea of making God in man's image. You in a sense, bring God down to man's level. By doing this you lessen the greatness and holiness of God. God will not change to suit us. He asks that we allow Him to change us. The Church should present Jesus as he is, not as we would like for him to be.

myLot reputation of 95/100. phyrre (1259)   ranked 112 out of 19,259 in questions & answers  3 years ago

That's certainly an interesting way of looking at it. I hadn't thought about it like that.

But isn't Jesus just a human? He's not God, but the son of God, so it's not really bringing GOD down to man's level, is it, since God and Jesus aren't synonymous or the same thing, but that God is above Jesus?

Sorry about the question. This has always been a point that I've wondered about. :)

myLot reputation of 84/100. dogsnme (825)   ranked 1,796 out of 19,259 in questions & answers  3 years ago

Jesus is God in human form. The Bible says so. I can't remember where it says it but I have read it. If you need me to I can look it up, but I gaurantee you it is in there. But back to the discussion. Jesus is human but He is a perfect human. He never sinned because He is God. It's only for that reason that He could pay the price in our place for our sin. But He did that because he chose to. Have you ever heard of the Holy Trinity? The trinity is God the father, God the Son(Jesus), and God the Holy Spirit. They are three aspects of the same Holy being. The devil spreads the lie that Jesus was only a man, that He wasn't all that important. But it's because of Jesus' death on the cross, burial, and resurrection on the third day that we have hope of escaping eternal death due to our sins. We can talk of God all we want but if we leave Jesus out of the equation, there is no salvation. But whether or not we have faith in Jesus as our Savior is up to us. It is our choice.

myLot reputation of 95/100. phyrre (1259)   ranked 112 out of 19,259 in questions & answers  3 years ago

OH! I understand now. Thank you for explaining that. Yes, I have heard of the Holy Trinity, but I didn't think they were the same being or anything. Thank you for clearing that up.

i'm sure the church has good reasons for portraying jesus wearing jeans. the image of jesus is of a man in ancient dress and it has been the same for ove 2000 years.

i think the idea of him wearing jeans is meant to make the church more appealing to younger people. it can only do good if it attracts younger people to church so i see no harm in it at all.

it's jesus as a person that we all love, not what he wears so his dress code is irrelevant to christianity.

myLot reputation of 95/100. phyrre (1259)   ranked 112 out of 19,259 in questions & answers  3 years ago

Yes, I agree that it was most likely done in an attempt to draw younger people into religion. And the idea of Jesus wearing ancient dress hasn't been the same for that long, only the ACCEPTED depiction of him has been around for that long. There have been some artists that depict him in modern garb.

I have this one artists in particular, I think it was a Baroque artist, but for the life of me I can't remember his name! He painted all Biblical figures in modern garb (or modern for that time), but the public didn't like it very much.

But I definitely understand that it's the person under the clothes, not the clothes themselves, that's important. :)

I guess that it will be the strange thing I will see Jesus in Jeans. I never even think about or imagine it. I always see his image crucified in the cross. But it is pretty amazing that they conceptualize it.

Jesus is one of the people in history which I admire the most. Because unlike any other god which we don´t know if exists or not, Jesus was real and the things he did for others where real. With that, I´m not saying that I´m a religious people, I don´t go to church, or pray, or...... but Jesus is Jesus.

But, well, I´m not too strict about this kind of things, since I didn´t find it offensive, but well, I know that not all the people are going to agree with that and I understand it.

myLot reputation of 95/100. phyrre (1259)   ranked 112 out of 19,259 in questions & answers  3 years ago

I think my position is basically the same as yours. I don't view Jesus as my savior, but I think he was a remarkable person just the same. And while I'm not offended, I can understand how some religious people might be, too.

This is the expression of a crazy idea! We regard Jesus, but we can never put whatever we want or choose with the image of Jesus. Can we do such practice with a living person already around us? If not, then why this is to be practised with Jesus, to whom billions of people on this earth regard? This sort of activities in the form of art or craft in media must be banned!
Thanks for this nice information and have a good day!
