I am trying to get my head around the fact that my TV is full of images of weeping people. There are spontaneous gatherings in public spaces and clubs and discos. A well know musician dies and we go into "Hero" overdrive. Why does this happen when celebrities die? These are people that we don't know personally. All that we truly know about them is their talent and perhaps the reporting of voyeuristic magazines about their private lives. So what makes us turn from our normal reasonable rational and balanced selves, to feeling as though we have lost a close family member and into hysterical zombies? I heard one girl say that today was the day that "Music Died". Wonder if they said that when Beethoven or Handel passed on.

It really is silly. I think the last time there was this much media coverage of a death it was of Princess Di, and Michael Jackson certainly wasn't royalty.

But I did get a text today that said "Michael Jackson will not be cremated. Since he is 90% plastic anyway, he is going to be melted down and made into Lego Blocks, so that the kids can play with him for a change."

Awful isn't it?

myLot reputation of 72/100. cynicalandoutspoken (2338)   ranked 138 out of 1,026 in understanding people  3 years ago

Thank god somebody laughed! I thought for sure I was going to end up crucified for my bad taste. lol

myLot reputation of 97/100. p1kef1sh (7539)   ranked 1 out of 1,026 in understanding people  3 years ago

LOL. Doesn't take long for the jokes to get underway Cyn. I don't feel bereft. I didn't when Lady Di died either. I do wonder if sometimes the western world has life so easy that we elevate celebrities to levels that they really don't belong in.

I just opened an e-mail I received a couple of days ago. It said "Black is in" and had pictures of Obama, Oprah, Tiger Woods, etc. Punchline was "Michael Jackson must be kicking himself."

Ugh. Those "jokes" are going around everywhere...it's disgusting.

myLot reputation of 98/100. tattylashes (4277)  3 years ago

i have had 3 texts about him already and 2 of them were pretty sick but one was funny and not in bad taste, it doesn't take long before the jokes start to circulate about a dead celebrity, this happened with princess Di too, but her jokes were terribly distasteful, ok so michael is dead, but his music will live on, the jokes will stop once people get fed up with them, then the next celeb will die and then the jokes start again, it's just like that.

I'll join the party

"In preperation for his up and coming tour, Michael Jackson was in the process of developing a new killer dance move. Well, looks like he finished it."

WITH THE PUBLIC DEMAND FOR ANSWERS, THE CORNERS OFFICE HAS RELUCTANTLY AGREED TO PREFORM AN AUTOPSY ON MR.JACKSON, SOURCES REPORT THAT EXPERTS WILL BE CALLED IN FROM MATTEL, AND HASBRO.

McDonald’s are bringing out the Michael Jackson tribute burger. 50 year old meat between two 7 year old buns

Jockeys at tomorrows race meeting will wear black armbands out of respect for Michael Jackson who successfully rode more 3 yr olds than anyone in living memory

This one is kind afunny, if you understand it
"Well, his ticker done stopped. No more was he. Went in his sleep, I'm sure. Apart from the weirdness, the brilliance of he was what he gave to the world for the dance floor. Surely, we'll miss him. Indeed we shall do. for an icon of life was he. as his passing from here reminds us all, cruelly... of our own certain mortality. "

Tackiness alert:

Farah Fawcet died and went to Heaven...
God said, "you have been so brave and such an inspiration to others during your illness, a true Angel on Earth, i will give you anything you ask."
Farah thought a moment and said, " i want all the children on Earth to be safe."
so God killed Michael Jackson.

It's idolism and respect. When someone that has been idolized dies, people weep. Sure it makes more sense if it's someone closer, but then again to the fans, they are close to the celebrity. I don't think it's uncalled for or uncommon. I do think that all the bad publicity, even the hints of it, need to be stopped.

myLot reputation of 97/100. p1kef1sh (7539)   ranked 1 out of 1,026 in understanding people  3 years ago

That's it. Idolatry. We build these people to be something that they're not. Superhuman.

hiya Pikey

I think it's something to do with the true meaning of the word fan.. fanatical! I saw one girl this morning and she was shedding crocodile tears. Don't get me wrong I liked MJ's music... a lot! and still do. Although I had a small tear in my eye I didn't know him persoanlly so I was not breaking down over it. Fans will miss him, but his music will live on so that's ok with me. As for Beethoven and Handel... I doubt that people were as irrational back in the day rolleyes

Alice happy

myLot reputation of 98/100. James72 (7104)  3 years ago

I definitely agree with your last point there Alice. People's fascination and worship of performers etc was undoubtedly far more reserved in the days of Beethoven and Handel.

myLot reputation of 97/100. p1kef1sh (7539)   ranked 1 out of 1,026 in understanding people  3 years ago

Good response Alice. People are much less realistic these days and as you say; irrational.

myLot reputation of 80/100. arkansos (397)  3 years ago

Exactly what happened. I liked his music and dancing too. Even I was a little sad, a tear exactly one skipped my eyes but that was it, I got over it. Its no way to respect a celebrity, esp someone who beleives in living life king size.MJ did. Frankly if I became a celebrity and died, i'd want people to mourn me less and spend time finding jokes about me. I might make some of my own jokes about me on my blog

myLot reputation of 99/100. Aliceinwebland (5358)  3 years ago

James: reserved yes, without a doubt they were polite and dignified... in public! but behind closed doors.. whistle as they say here in Scotland aww frills and nae knickers. lol

Thanx Pikey, it's almost mass hysteria with the loss of famous people, one will cry because they see another cry and they think it's the right thing to do.

myLot reputation of 99/100. Aliceinwebland (5358)  3 years ago

@ arkansos:
yes, I agree I would like to see some fun after my death, a few jokes sure, but not enough to go OTT, causing disrespect. I plan to have a drink on my my mother's coffin... she suggested it! We have to celebrate that life goes on too.

I really don't know to be honest. Sure, it's a very sad thing that such a talented musician has passed away and it's also sad that Farrah Fawcett died too. Maybe these events provide the catalyst for deep seated emotions to finally spring forth and that's all there is to it? Maybe people have these convoluted ideals of celebrities and in a sense, see them as somewhat immortal and therefore immune to the same tragedies that effect themselves? As I said, I really don't know. I'm saddened at Michael Jackson's death because he was a troubled man that probably never truly found peace with himself and he was a popular icon from my youth, but I'm not going to cry in the streets over this. Beethoven and Handel unfortunately were never truly recognised for their brilliance until after their deaths. Such is the fate of many a true artist!

myLot reputation of 97/100. p1kef1sh (7539)   ranked 1 out of 1,026 in understanding people  3 years ago

I think that in the west we have constructed a celebrity culture where we believe that in order to "succeed" we need to be famous (and wealthy). Achievers are shoved into our faces daily to reinforce the fact. Obviously when one of these people does something as human as die we can't quite grasp it and hence the public outpourings of grief that we are seeing today. Good point about Beethoven and Handel. Of course they didn't have the media/communications packages that today's artists enjoy.

myLot reputation of 99/100. Aliceinwebland (5358)  3 years ago

A very troubled man indeed James. He was an introvert too, according to one of his close friends and I believe most of this was caused through lack of a normal childhood. Don't you think he was trying to make himself look like his sister Latoya? There was a big bust up between her and the father if my memory serves me well.

myLot reputation of 98/100. James72 (7104)  3 years ago

The entire family has had their share of ups and downs that's for sure! Such is the price you pay for always being in the spotlight I guess because all families have issues of some kind or another. I read an article yesterday that was saying that MJ's constant plastic surgery had a lot to do with his desire to look as little like his abusive Father as possible. LaToya is bizarre in her own right too and I've seen some very odd behaviour from her in interviews before. I wonder how the family will fare in the public eye now that their most well known member has passed on? After the hype surrounding MJ's death settles a little, this may actually be the first time they ever get the chance to have some anonymity? Time will tell.

Steve. It is obvious that our world has a misplaced set of values and concerns.

The entertainment industry has allowed a few fans to focus their attention in such a mournful way to the people you have described.

I think of so many people who die from so many different things, and wonder where the mourners are for them.

I am personally sickened by the goobers that went to the in this case, the UCLA medical center to weep and mourn over Jacko. Yes, his style changed contempory music and dance. That's nice. Get over him. He just was not that important and didn't do anything to significantly improve the lot of mankind.

And so many groupies do this dumb shiit!

Where are the groupies that mourn when someone responsible for a great medical break through dies?

Good post Steve.

myLot reputation of 97/100. p1kef1sh (7539)   ranked 1 out of 1,026 in understanding people  3 years ago

Get over him. He just was not that important and didn't do anything to significantly improve the lot of mankind. Good point. I don't blame him, but just how did he manage to be elevated to a God? You are right. I don't remember a river of tears when Christian Barnard (first heart transplant surgeon) died. Yet he undoubtedly made significantly greater impact on the future of mankind than most celebrities.

Well, I have to say that I felt that way about Elvis Presley. I still remember where I was the day I heard he died. I loved his music, thought he was one of the few handsome ones in my era, and could listen to his voice forever. So when he died, I was in shock, and couldn't help shedding a tear, as ridiculous as that sounds. I didn't worship him, nor did I ever think about him on a daily basis, but when I realized that there would be no more music sung by him again, that's what saddened me.

Mourn his passing by all means. What I don't understand is how people go from being saddened by his death to hysteria.

Its a way of honouring and respecting his talents and the greatness he achieved. You may not be personally touched, but other people are. So they mourn. Though you feel no sense of loss, you must respect the way other people feel.

myLot reputation of 97/100. p1kef1sh (7539)   ranked 1 out of 1,026 in understanding people  3 years ago

Thank you. I am sorry that he died. But respecting his talent seems insufficient to me to explain the weeping and wailing that we are seeing.

sandeepnongkynrih (59)  3 years ago

Well different people are attached to different celebrities. Apparently, a lot of people have a stronger feeling towards Michael Jackson, than they have for other celebrities. That must be why they are in mourning. Just because his passing doesn't make me and you sad enough to actually cry, other people's degree of sadness differs.

myLot reputation of 89/100. kprofgames (1668)  3 years ago

I can understand what you are saying there sand, but I think the thing that gets to me is all the media attention. He is not the only talent that has passed on recently. So why wouldn't there be the same media attention for the other? I guess I look at things differently.

myLot reputation of 99/100. Aliceinwebland (5358)  3 years ago

very true sandeep, it's everyone's perogative to grieve in their own way, although I think most of it is crocodile tears.

sandeepnongkynrih (59)  3 years ago

Well kprofgames, i think all this media attention is because of the scandals and controversies surrounding Michael Jackson's life. As we know, the common public loves scandals. So i guess that is why the media is giving so much attention to Michael Jackson's death. The media has become very commercial and wants to show the public what the public wants to see. I'm not very good at expressing what I'm trying to say, but I hope you get the point I'm trying to make. :P

Cheers.
Happy MyLotting.
=D

sandeepnongkynrih (59)  3 years ago

Aliceinwebland, I completely agree with you when you say that most people are shedding crocodile tears.
