Will this stop the PANDAmonium? |
| |
| Thai elephants painted to look like pandas after the black and white bears steal their fans! The elephant is Thailand's national symbol, but the country has gone panda-crazy since the birth of a female panda cub. Sick of all the fuss, keepers decided to take drastic-action, painting five of their neglected giants in water color paint, then parading them before schoolchildren!! I find this absolutely inane. I can understand the craze though being a panda spanker but this is one instance too far! What do you think? Source: Mailonline | | MasquePArades od pandaphants | | | | |

| | I can understand their celebration and it feels so good that they are rejoicing the new born. However, its kinda bizarre how they are treating the elephants just in an endeavor to pull more crowds and satisfy the stupid whims. Can you beat the agony that the poor animals have to go every day? | | | |

| | They are painted with colours, then paraded and made to perform in front of school children. All this to draw the attention back to the elephant. The elephants must be going through anagonising time and moreso now with all the extra attention. | | | |

| | Hi Alok I think this is even more inane since we kinda create the craze. The fun part is OK but what after it dies down, it really makes us to ponder over the urgency of the make over. | | | |

| | Take the look of fatigue as one of resignation or quiet and wry humour ... "What daft idea will these idiotic humans dream up next? Still, it gets us looked at and admired and what, after all, better gives an elephant that "scratch-behind-the-ears" feeling? "Sure, humans are incomprehensible bordering on stupid but most of them fail to see that we enjoy making fun of them simply by doing the things that they make us (or train us to) do!" | | | |

| | I think better call those three as ELEPHANDA and not PANDAPHANTS. The telescopic merge of words for Elephant and Panda. Keepers hunch really genuine because nobody has yet comes out with this notion(general understanding) before. Sort of blueprint or conception, I guess. Very good idea and I like it very much. Thanks mimpi1911 for your pictorial sharing with us on here, a rare in a few news material. | | | | | | |

| | I know, you're a superb artist, mimpi1911. Do you like mural drawing? I learned something good from India members, to balance up my right and left brain functions, I have to practice more on drawing in whatever type of it; sketching, painting, etc.; so know I am learning about how to get it started by heart or play by ear. I think better start with sketching your avatar...hahahahaha! am I right, mimpi1911?. | | | |

| | I think the keepers are suffering from jealousy more than the elephants. They chose to work with elephants, so they shouldn't be acting like that to begin with. Painting elephants to look like pandas just degrades the animals themselves. They are elephants, and should be kept to look like elephants. Personally, I think elephants are marvelous creatures. They are so caring of their family groups and the whole herd is involved with raising the babies. Us humans could learn a lot from them in that regard. Give me an elephant over a panda for a pet any day. Ok, so I don't have the space, but it would certainly be well looked after and would become a great mode of transport and source of fertilizer for the gardens as well as a great companion. just don't know if an elephant would cope with our troop of monkeys though (those being our kids). | | | | | | |

| | I prefer elephants over Pandas, too, and just want to add that NOBODY had better try spanking an elephant. Elephants are highly intelligent and should be treated with kindness and respect! | | | |

| | Newzealtrailian, elephants are well known to have a good sense of humour and to love dressing up. I don't doubt that they didn't know that they were supposed to look like pandas (or even what a panda was, though, coming from a zoo, they might have seen one). Elephants can and do smile (though they hide it beneath their trunk) and they have an incredibly wicked sense of humour. | | | |

| | That's a pertinent point you have made. I think, it would be utterly confusing for the little ones as well. They would be confused as to the identity of the animals. They are tender minds, they do not know the masquerades. | | | |

| | I think all animals are beautiful in their own ways and we must respect each of them for the individuality they come with naturally. May be, I am going overboard and the zoo authority has enough respect for its inmates, but I am very passionate about it. | | | |

| | I am wondering if your panda would submit to having his coat covered with grey, wrinkly mud and a hosepipe attached to his nose to make him look like an elephant. Somehow I doubt that, placid as they seem to be, pandas would have that depth of humour. | | | |

| | Wow, grrrrl, I might need a few decades to think on that one. Can I get back to you? Reminds me a bit of the fuss over the Bonsai Kittens they had a while back, only that was just photo manipulation...not real kittens. These are real elephants, errr, I mean fake pandas. Hmmmm. Just so they don't try to feed them bamboo leaves? | | | | | | |

| | OK, I have thought about it and looked at the pictures and decided it is not only inane, but inexcusable to ridicule the elephants in this manner. Instead of painting the elephants, if they wish to draw positive attention to the elephants and made some money too, they should give the elephants paint sets and canvas and let them use their trunks to create original works of art to be sold to the public. They have done this in many zoos here in the US and around the world and some of the elephant painters were selling their works for thousands of US dollars not because people felt sorry for the elephants but because some of the elephants were excellent artists. To read more about the elephants who paint instead of being painted, here is a page that has links to some of the many galleries which show the elephant paintings online: http://www.elephantart.com/catalog/history.php Here is a page featuring Renee, an elephant artist living in Toledo, Ohio, USA: http://www.elephantart.co... | | | |

| | I saw a picture of this on a a blog a few minutes ago. I don't know what to think about it. Should we call them Pandaphants? Should I be enraged that they painted them(I hope it wasn't led based paint) without asking the elephants how they really felt about the color scheme? I laughed because I thought it was an edited photo. But it's real, so I'm semi-speechless. by the way, what pray tell is panda spanking anyway? Sounds a little bit kinky, and a whole lot of weird. Does it in any way help to increase the panda population? Do they enjoy it? Is there an internet meme that involves panda's getting spanked? If so, would it be considered as NSFW? | | | | | | |
