Are dogs smarter than cats?  

i don't know but i think that is not a dog is smart than cat or the contrary but simply they are different as the way they will have a behaviour or interect with you as well!
So normally i like more dogs than cats in general but i don't think there is one smarter but just different way to interact with people and live their lives too!!

As with people, I think it depends on the individual. As Tony stated, it's more a matter of how they think, dogs are eager while cats are lazy. How dose the joke go? A dog thinks "this person feeds me, shelters me and loves me, they must be god." a cat thinks "this person feeds me, shelters me and loves me, I must be god."

Ya my dog knocks on the door to get inside. He gets me the news paper everyday. He also poo and pee in the toilet. Don't you know most of the handicap people are given with trained dogs to help them in there daily life. Have you ever hard a cat is given to handicap. So what do you think now who is smarter.
I will say dogs are smarter.

my dog lets us know when he needs food or water, and when he wants to go outside. He knows the drawer in the kitchen which has his leads and treats and gets really excited when you open it. He understands sit and paw before he gets a treat and before we answer the dog he knows to sit on the bottom of the stairs and calm down before we let him greet a visitor. he puts himself to bed aswell if i'm up late quite a character

Smarter is a pretty ambiguous qualifier. I think dogs and cats have different kinds of intelligence.Is empathy a form of intelligence? Compassion? Ability to think about others? I think cats are very logical creatures - they figure out how to get what they want, how to use the litter box, where they can be, what they can get away with, and how to trick people into giving them things. Dogs, however, legitimately want to please you. They actually like you and will figure things out because it is in their nature to please their master. Dogs also develop a sense of selfless loyalty and compassion. Dogs may not have the same, manipulative logic as cats, but they are quick learners because they want to figure out how to please you. They learn because of empathy, not just for self-betterment.

Believe it or not, I'm a cat person, but I think that empathy, compassion, and open-mindedness are more important than clever manipulation. Dogs and cats have different types of intelligence - dogs have a more advanced social intelligence.

Dogs r a little smarter than cats, or cats r just to independant. Dogs will do more than cats to get attension and affection. You can train a dog to go 4 a walk, a cat on a leash for a walk for more than 5 minutes is a choir. Dogs can be taught to do their thing on your property only, like my dogs, Bouviers, working dogs. Dogs can learn and do more than cats, obediance training, guard training, tracking and a few more.. Cats / dogs hunt / track / and numerous other things.. P.S I really luv cats to Himalayans / Siamese / lions / tigers / linx / bobcats and bears . That's another story..

i realy think both of them are at a even keel.my dog never leaves my side while i'm at home. She also knows when its time to eat, and when it's time to sleep (din mean that to rhyme). What my dog hates most in the world is a bath and if i have a horse in my hand, my dog will be in the next neighbourhood. But overall, my dog thinks i am master, and should never displease me.
Where as my cat, is a different story.my cat is never home except on weekends and at eating times. Which show that he knows to tell time^^. What my cat hates most in the world is my younger brother, and trys its beest not to be seen with him.

they realy do out do them selvs, but since i prefer dogs, i say thats dogs are smarter, coz they know how to be family.
