Go A Little Greener... Does It Really Hurt? |
|
I think I've started to annoy my entire family with my going green speeches because to them why should they do a little bit when nobody else it - but that is the biggest point of all. If everyone did just a little there would be a huge impact overall, people just need to stop being so pessimistic about it.
So what little things do you do in each day that helps the environment go greener?
Have you thought about not using a plastic bag when purchasing an item? Have you thought about hand washing dishes instead of wasting all the water and electric on using a dishwasher? Hang- drying clothes? Turning off your computer at night? Recycle paper and plastic?
There are simple things that you can do each day that doesn't even affect your daily life - its just taking the step to change a habit.

2. Wizzywig (2887) | 7 months ago | I've been doing all those things for years now because some of them also save me money. We also recycle glass and cans here. We only put as much water in the kettle as we're going to use; dont have anything electrical on standby; only iron laundry when necessary (usually just my work tunics); unfortunately, I have to use the car for work but I go grocery shopping etc on the way home rather than make separate trips; keeping tyre pressures correct, avoiding sudden changes in speed; I read somewhere that it used less fuel to reverse into a space than to reverse out of it.. I'm guessing its something to do with the engine having to work harder when you first start up and when you reverse - so if you reverse when the engine's already warm you save (??); garden and food waste is composted; I handwash small items of clothing ... I'm sure there are other things I do & more that I could do. I work on a busy hospital ward and it really winds me up to see the number of plastic aprons, bottles, paper towels etc that cannot be recycled as they must be treated as clinical waste!!

anotherxidentity (1058) | 7 months ago | It's great what you are doing!
I understand where you are coming from about what a waste a lot of things in hospitals are but at least the one in my area has it where the food court is almost all about recycling. They don't really offer you a trash can and instead they offer you all recycling bins and then a conveyor belt to put your trash on so therefore if you don't recycle the people behind the scenes can do it for you.
But I guess the main concern hospitals have is do we go green or do we take a precaution that otherwise could end in a high paying lawsuit later on. Its a shame that it happens - but it does.

anotherxidentity (1058) | 7 months ago | You are right - its all about a mindset and so many people think that its going to change their lives drastically when it doesn't take any extra time to do most of the things - they aren't a hassle - and in the long run you're actually saving yourself more money. Its a win-win situation, but of course people won't listen. They would rather believe that global warming is false and that its all a big scam to get people to do certain things etc.

5. change1life (1192) | 7 months ago | I have the cloth shopping bags and I am doing much better at remembering to take them when I go shopping. They really are quite nice because they are bigger and you don't wind up with 50 bags to unload when you get home. I have heard mixed messages about using the dishwasher, I have heard more that it actually saves on water, I am not sure but I don't run mine but about once a week anyway. I always turn off my computer at the end of the day and there are other little things I do here and there so I don't think it hurts to go a little greener. If I had the room to put different cans I would do more recycling of plastic. I plan to start that when we move into the bigger apartment at our complex, just not sure how soon that is going to happen. Have a happy and safe 4th, God Bless!

anotherxidentity (1058) | 7 months ago | But in all actuality there are a ton of facts showing that we need to stop consuming so much and we need to start going green in order not only to save the environment for ourselves but for our children and grandchildren.
And the thing is - I'm not "shoving" it down their throat. Its me saying hey why doesn't the whole family recycle, or hey why don't we all just turn our computers off at night.
I'm not asking anyone to make HUGE changes to their daily habits. These are small things that don't make you go make to the stone age. I'm happy with having electricity and everything else but Americans like to overuse on a ton of things - the big reason why there are so many obese people - they overuse food.

Palmerhusky (735) | 7 months ago | and im very much like that too. but im not saying go back to the stone age either. all people like us are saying is do things to help offset what we've already done. stop using plastic bags from stores and start using canvas or recycled reusable bags. buy things that are carbon neutral and things that have a high recycle contend. stop using patrolium based products and things like that. thats all were saying. its really not that difficult.

ra1787 (229) | 7 months ago | The problem is that people who don't care about being green are consuming finite resources that are depleted every day more, and our future generations will lack those resources because we have wasted them because we didn't care. So it is right to try to convince others, because most of the people just ignore the problem and the consequencies of their behaviour, knowing how things are it is hardly justifiable to waste energy and resources. I am not saying that we should go back to stone age, but using a 3 ton car to move an 80kg person is definetely exhaggerated, a 900kg car serves the same purpose, leaving a computer on on night when one doesn't use it is senseless, it saves you 50 second the day after, when you have to turn it on, but i don't think it could decrease your overall quality of life. Energy is too cheap in many parts of the world and this leads to huge consumption and pollution. Here in europe we have the same quality of life of americans and we use less than half of the energy used by an american, and we still waste a lot...

8. ra1787 (229) | 7 months ago | I always do those things you say, except for the plastic bags that i use sometimes but then i use them to throw garbage (if i didn't use plastic bags from shops i'd have to buy waste bags:D), i also avoid using the car every time it is possible and use mass transit. I still can't understand why so many people in the united states use the dryer, hanging the clothes and waiting 1 day can save loads of electricity (and money), and i find no draw-back in that. I also recycle everything i can (metals, paper, glass and plastic) too bad there is not yet organic waste composting in my area, and living in a flat i can't compost my waste here^^ I turn off everything when i am not using it, and avoid keeping things in standby.

10. desteny114 (707) | 7 months ago | You are right if we all made a little efort it would make a bug diference. So can you imagine if we actually made more than just a little efort? I have a conteiner where I put all my recycling items in there and I was surprice to see that every week it we get it all the way to the top. It must be better tu put it in the recycling container than the regular trash so they can do something better with it. I also hand wash my dishes I just don't like to wait until the dishwasher getd full of durty dishes. I changes all the little bulbes to the little florecent bulbs that use less electricity and also tune of all the electricol items and disconect them from the wall outlet. Well on disconecting all the items I tend to forget to do it for all of the things but I might disconect some every night.
