Here is the reason why I am asking this question under Etsy. I was bored, and browsing around on Etsy. My search category was Caribbean. I found several things that were Caribbean related. One item really shocked me, I saw a photo of a lady. It was not a painting just a picture someone took and there description was beggar in the sugar cane field. I think the price was over $100.00. I am trying to understand how is this art. I am not into that politically correct stuff, but it seems like exploitation of a poor person. I cannot see the art in that, and why Etsy has it on it's website. Am I reading to much into this, is taking a picture of someone now considered art. I thought art was creating something. I just don't get it.

I think any photo can be considered art but this sounds like someone trying to make a fast $100. I consider art an item that has taken time to design, work and complete. I also think art is a painting or drawing by a talented artist. I enjoy the crafty side of arts.

Etsy rarely removes anything from their site without several complaints. They often take the stance that what someone considers art, another may not and they won't play the judge unless the item is grossly out of line.
I also don't see anything positive in exploitation of the unfortunate, but I suppose everyone's opinion of what is and what is not art varies.

Photos I think are supposed to be art as what their subject is. Personally I believe art should be something you make with your own hands. Be it paint, stone, cloth or thread.

To me art is any creation by a person or persons whose intention is to stimulate thought or emotion.
This would include a wide range of expressions including sculptures, paintings, poetry, music, dance, acting, photography or any number of other forms of expressions.
I have taken pictures where my intention was to capture a moment in time, that is not art. But I have also taken pictures where I wanted to make a statement of beauty or grace or I wanted to ignite passion. I may have not influence many people in my attempt but that was my intention.
Therefore what is art is determined by the one who created it.
Art requires that the person creating it use thought and time.
