Collecting DVD movies on an economical level.... email this discussion to a friend?

I am still back in the 20th century and am using to play and record with VHS tapes. Over the years I have recorded so many good movies. I dont' TIVO so I still record on VHS.

But as I find my favorites on DVD at a cheap price, I will buy it and then hand down the VHS to someone else..or just record over it!

I always watch for them on sale at $5 or less... never more than $10 and only then if it is one I have been waiting for or haven't seen cheaper. Today I got Jurassic Park and Twister for $4.50 at Target. I have been adding to my collection of my favorite movies this way and am doing very well. I know many will buy ASAP and pay $25 or more for the movie... but I won't do it. I know the price willl drop. I wanted 27 Dresses SO BAD. Got a free rented acoupon and had never even heard of it (don't do the theater!) and just saw it and thought it looked good so I rented it for free. I Loved that movie! But wasn't going to pay $20... it dropped to $15, then $13, and I almost bought it but then went to Blockbuster and it was on sale (pre-viewed but perfect condition!) for $7.50! I grabbed it!

So how do you accomodate adding to your collection of DVD's and movies on an economical option?

i don't buy dvds until they are reduced to a low price and only if its one that i know i would want to watch again and again because its just too much money full price, so in the mean time i'm a member of love film and i rent my dvds

I haven't paid full price for ANYTHING is so long... I can't remember the last time I did! I ALWAYS wait for sale, use coupons and the like. I will wait till the are at around $5. I wouldn't bother at all, but I see the VHS players are on their way out...once they are gone... my VHS aren't any good so that is why I have started collecting them on DVD. But I have time. I bought a VHS player to have on hand if the one I have breaks.. I have family movies on VHS... those can't be replaced!

I only buy the ones I really like - I dont' waste money. Renting is nearly $5 apiece ($4.49?) I haven't rented in so long. I get a free rental every month at Block buster. I hate to spend the money to rent and then the movie be horrible. That happened on the last two free rentals I had...they were the worst things I've ever seen as was only saved from total aggrivation by the fact that they didn't cost me anything! But I'd been so mad if I'd paid for them!

At the moment, my local charity shop is selling films on VHS at 10pence each so I can get 10 for 1GBP. I buy them, watch them, hand them on to my mum to watch and then she donates them back to a charity shop. I don't find that many films that i want to watch more than once but, I would never pay full price for DVDs. I'll wait for them to turn up in a 'bargain bin' or buy a pre-watched copy like you did.

myLot reputation of 97/100. coffeebreak (4821)   ranked 180 out of 11,307 in watching movies  5 months ago

That's a great way to go! I am only replacing my VHS as if they tapes break.. that is it. And with VHS players on their way out...if I dont' have one, they can't be played. I have famiy movies on VHS too.

But your 10 centers are a great way to go! I am not a huge movie fan, but if there is one I really liked.. I just wait till it goes on sale.. they will sooner or later! And at $5 - that is a savings. I'll watch it over and over and over throughout the years

Likewise I still have a huge collection of videos both pre-recorded and some which I use for recording from TV. I got rid of part of my collection a while back and regret it now so made the decision that I will only get rid of my videos when I can replace them on DVD, which in some cases is not possible.

Generally I watch out for DVDs when they come down to below £4.00 and if that means I end up watching a film a year or two after its release then so be it. I really object to paying full price for a dvd and rarely do so unless it is a special edition or boxset. I dread to think how much money I would have spent if I had payed full price for every DVD I own, especially as the sell on value for second hand DVDs is so poor.

That's how I feel. I only get rid of the VHS when I can replace them with DVD. And you know... quite often... picking the movie up a year or so later after now seeing it is a fun thing! I hadn't seen Final Countdown in YEARS. Loved that show! And saw it on DVD for $5 so I grabbed it! And now I watch it about once a month!

I have a Lifetime TIVO but it is in NoCal and I'm in SoCal at the moment, so I'm stuck. Was thinking of trying Netflix as a friend joined and loves it, but the truth is we don't watch that many movies, so I hate to be locked into a subscription that maybe we won't use. I'm annoyed that TIVO quit selling the Lifetime accounts. Maybe I need to check out the competition.

I don't watch TV much either and haven't been to a movie since I saw Titanic!!! Won't go into the reason, but I'll wait and hear how they were or if my daughter recommends it... she knows what I like. Then I might rent it and if I like it, I might look to buy it. But that is why I dont' do NetFlix too. I just don't watch enough or think there is much out there available that is worth wasting my time watching. I recently rented (for free thank goodness) two movies that I thought were said to be really good and they were the dumbest things I have ever seen. I like the 70's, 80's tv shows better anyway!

I don't always worry about being economical when I buy anything. I bought a movie at Walmart today that was on the $13 dollar rack. I bought it because I couldn't afford buying one for the newer price of $20 bucks. But next week if I have the money I may very well buy one for $20. My philosphy is that when you die you can't take the money with you so you might as well enjoy it when you can. Of course, it's easier for me to look at it like that because I don't have a family to support along with all the other debts. Don't get me wrong. I don't spend my money wrecklessly. I do budget my money to an extent. I just don't look for a bargain everytime I go shopping. Sometimes it's just too much of a hassle.

One has to spend their money the way they see fit. What works for one, might not work for the other. Yes, looking for bargains can be a hassle...but for some of us it is a way of life. Happy movie watching!

I have a huge DVD collection, but I started backwards, I began to buy older movies, usually they are cheaper, once movies are released and been out on DVD for a few years, they drop in price dramatically. I still go to the cinemas when someone interesting is released.

myLot reputation of 97/100. coffeebreak (4821)   ranked 180 out of 11,307 in watching movies  5 months ago

That's pretty much the way I have done. Old movies and tv shows. THe sitcoms from the 60's,70's and 80's are the best ever so I have been collecting them. Nothing worth watching on tv these days in the way of a funny sitcom. And the movies.. like Long Long Trailer, Harper Valley PTA, Final Countdown and so many others... those are all classic, and totaly enjoyment to watch over and over. I thin the most recent one I have bought was National Treasure 2. It happened to be on an unadvertised special in Target one day for $10 so I got it. Next time I went in and ever since.. it has been $15-$20.

They are cheaper as they get older and in a way.. that is good... keeps the oldies but goodies around in these days of constant crap that seems to be dominating the theaters these days!

I am a member of a movie club and only buy from it when they have really good sales. I also have a membership with one of the rent through mail places and that is where I look to get alot of my movies on DVD. They are previously viewed but in very good condition and the best part is they are between 5 and 10 dollars, just depending on how long they have been out and how popular they were. I don't spend full price on DVDs unless its buy one at full price and get additional ones free or half off, or something like that. I will have to remember that Target has them for 4.50 and check it out sometime. God Bless!

Check Target for alot of unadvertised sales on TUESDAYs. Thatis when I find lot of other bargains, but I always check the DVD and there are always $5-$10 sales.

I love my movies and my collection is quite extensive and for the most part I have gotten most of them for very cheap. Walmart is another great one they have the 5 dollar bin. Either that or I search on line once in a while I will spend full price or almost I should say but those are for some I have been really looking forward too.

Oh, yeah, forgot about Walmart.. I don't go there much.. out of the way. But they do have a few stands of DVD for $5. I did go there last 2 christmas to get DVD stocking stuffers
