Oh I definitely think that help for those who need it should NOT primarily be from the government. I know that may sound off for me because I'm on disability, but I believe that strongly. Certainly the government has more resources to see if the people applying for aid really need it, but out and out, the most aid should be from churches, charities, and avenues such as those. My church, struggling financially as it is, buys groceries for people who come and ask for help. My dad has bought gas for a number of people who didn't have any. And he isn't about to be played. He drives to the person's car himself, with them along. Of course he doesn't questions people who need groceries. He just does it.
Maybe the government would still have to contribute, I don't know. But I really think it could be changed. I know it wasn't the government's duty years and years ago. It could be that way again. But the government officials in office now are not looking at those ways to solve the problems of poor people.

I have to agree with you. I hope that it changes and I hope that the changes that do get made, if they do will make much more progress. There are just too many people who fall under and more being added all the time. @jillhill (37353)

I think states are stretched to the limit with helping out people. I know our state just passed a law that if you move here you can't get anymore help then you did in the state you moved here from as many were moving to Minnesota just to get higher dollar help.

The states are government, as well. They are just on a more local level. Yes, it is more efficient for aid to be distributed closer to home, states helping their residents, or better yet, cities helping people and neighbors and churches helping people. Then it is a matter of real people getting real help.

I think people should do more to help themselves and not wait for any government help, state or federal.
As to the issue of the federal government, it has very limited power. The real power lies with the state and the people.... and things are not being done the way that the Constitution says that they are to be done.
We have to get back to the Constitution and get the Federal government back within it's preset limits.

I definately think that states should be given more authority to help their own residents. I know that they do have quite a bit, but there are still federal regulations that while they are good for some states, aren't good for others. I would think that the closer and more localized the government entity was, that the easier it would be to help that citizen.
