Words floating around in your head, waiting to get out...and causing insomnia! | | what inspires you to write? With me, it seems like sometimes i just have these thoughts and words floating aruond in my head, and the only way to get them out is by writing them down. For me this usually comes in the form of poetry. Many times when i am trying to deal with personal issues, or stresses in my life, i find the only way to calm myself and figure things out is to put that pen to paper and write about it. Some nights when i lay down to sleep, my brain just starts spinning with feelings and ideas, and i know the only way i am going to get to sleep is to get out my notebook and get these thoughts out. Does anyone else ever have this happen?
Here's a poem that came about on one such night, when all i wanted to do was sleep but couldn't!
Would you?
Don't you hate it when you wake up at a quarter to three in the morning and all you want to do is go out or see people but hardly anyone is up and there's nothing to do you're so totally bored you just can't sleep you want to talk To get the words out that take up space in your head, your crowded brain you want to run farther and faster than you ever have before to get away to escape from the poison in your mind from the truth in your soul If you were offered a way to forget it all and just go back to sleep, would you take it? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
the poem itself poses another question.....WOULD you take it? Would you give up all that creative energy to just go back to sleep? or would you rather enjoy the "high" that comes from writing something (i can't be the only one who feels accomplished when i complete a writing) and forgo the rest that your body so dearly desires?

I think that a writer writes not just because they like to write and 'work' words, but that they just MUST write. I've always had the habit to keep a pen and paper next to my bed, and in my purse, etc. There comes a time when the words just have to make it to paper lol. It used to be that my pen could not keep up with the flow of words forming in my brain, now I keep a notepad open on my computer and I get it down in a frenzy of typing hahaha. No, I don't think I would want to give up on my creativity just to go back to sleep. You're right about finishing a writing bringing a natural high. I do find though that when I wake up, or can't sleep, (because my brain is in writing mode), then once the flow is over I can go back to sleep and rest. There's been many times when I'd find it's 4 or 5am and I'm still writing lol. Even though I sometimes get sleep deprived, I'd still rather have that than a lack of creativity:-)

When I'm frustrated, angry or sad I often journal my thoughts, feelings and the whys behind them. It's a kind of medicine that drains the build up. Other times I use essays when there's something I'm deeply interested in that I compile research for and I have opinions or theories on. Then there's my creative muse. This one either rides me or I ride it. Some times I'll take a strong emotion or I'll build one up and then stream the thoughts that come, some times with a direction in mind and other times I let it take me where it will. Then there will be other times when an idea or thought hits me and I have to sit down and just write. More often then not typing, as that seems to be the fastest mode I've found. And I need the fastest and the need is a physical one. When the words come I never seem to be able to get them out fast enough. It's a deluge and it crashes over me and sends me spinning. There's this perfect moment when the words and ideas just come and one spawns another and another, and all I can see is the ideas, the thoughts and the connections. I feel a mad thing in and around me and I love it. I love the emotion writing evokes within me when I'm in that state. I let it take me over and I'm half in control and half completely out of control. Needless to say I find it addicting. So as to your answer. Hon, if I can ride that crushing, suffocating and liberating force of writing then sleep can come another time.

fruitcakeliz (846) | 5 months ago | Amazing answer.....and might i add that you have a wonderful way with words! I had to read your post a few times just so i could take it all in. The way you describe your writing literaly bought tingles to me, as it is precisley how i feel when the urge comes over me. Sometimes i just wish i could figure out how to bring that urge on, as the release felt when writing makes any kind of therapy or drug pale in comparison.
Unfortunately these urges only seem to hit me during times of great emotional turmoil, when i am torn about something, or feeling hurt and betrayed. Though i supose i should be thankful that life has been very calm and drama free these past few years, i occasionaly wish something would happen, just so i can write again! Unfortunately if i try to force my creative juices, nothing comes.
You seem to be very passionate about your writing, keep it up! You have inspired me to get a new journal and just start forcing myself to write in it. Ever since i filled up my last one, my creativity has just dried up it seems. Maybe it is one of those "use it or lose it" type situations, because i have been away from doing it for so long, it is harder to get back into it.
Thanks again for your reply.

I guess I have gotten to a point in life where I don't really keep a "regular" schedule, anymore. Because I work from home, I'm really not all that dependent on watching the clock.... so I keep weird hours, and it's not that unusual for me to get up in the middle of the night, if some stroke of inspiration suddenly hits me.
To answer your questions, NO, there's no way I'd want to not have the crazy thoughts and inner conversations that may (or may NOT!) lead to some form of creative writing. Of course, most of my writing ends up as flowing free-association rambles that never aspire to be more than journal entries.

fruitcakeliz (846) | 5 months ago | That does make it a little easier, if you don't have to worry about getting up for work the next morning when it is 2 a.m. and you are sitting in bed scribbling away in a notebook. I totally understand what you mean about most of your work amounting to nothing more than journal entries, but even those evoke the "writers high" that i alluded to.
