What's happening to the trackball mouse?  email this discussion to a friend?

Long long time ago my mouse broke and hubby got me a new one. When I saw it I was surprised. It was completely different from all the other ones I used to have and I wasn't even sure that I would get used to it at all.
But the truth was that I got used to it really fast and ended up loving it. Much more than any of the other ones.
I actually have a bit of trouble when I use someone else's computer, just because of the mouse.
It's still working, but that ball needs to be cleaned often and I need to clean it inside more than what I used to have to.
And this week I went about looking for a new one. I have a stapples and a future shop close by so I decided to take a look. But I couldn't find any trackballs.
I looked everywhere and there wasn't even one in any of those two stores.
Plenty of the regular ones, a lot of the cordless ones, but not trackball. I guess maybe they're not as popular as the other ones, but I really feel that for me they are more comfortable.
Thankfully I checked tiger direct and found out that they still have trackballs of all kinds so I will be going there tomorrow LOL
ANy way have you ever used a trackball mouse? Did you find it comfortable in your hand? Which kind of mouse do you use?
Mine is the one in the image below.

You must have very precise thumb-control to be able to use that thumb/trackball for graphics work... I have an old one connected to an old server - no need to search for a flat surface when I need to control the mouse... I still prefer the old analog mice, the ones with the ball that need cleaning. They don't suffer when used on reflective surfaces, unlike the optical ones that get all confused and stutter the pointer all over the screen. ^_^

It took me a bit to get used to it, but after that I feel much more comfortable and I am more precise with my thumb for some reason.
I know what you mean regarding the optical ones, but I don't have many reflective surfaces - I did have a bit of a problem when I connected it to my laptop and was using it on top of a glossy magazine, but I just covered it with a notebook and it worked :)
I do have to clean the ball sometimes - mostly when I forget and touch it when I've been eating - my bad :)

I just came into the 21st century by buying a cordless mouse!!! Didn't think I'd like it at first as I figured I'd be loosing it on my desk..that is often a mess. But I haven't lost it once so I'm happy with it! The track ball with a cord that I had.. was always giving me a problem with the cord from the tower not being long enough and I was always having to adjust my pull out keyboard tray. The cordless is very nice to have!

myLot reputation of 100/100. arkaf61 (5809)   ranked 143 out of 6,367 in computer  3 years ago

I have a cordless in the desktop. It's also a trackball hehehehehehe
So I have the best of both worlds :)
I know what you mean about the length. When I had my other desk I had that problem too. That's why we got the cordless.
I am using the old trackball with the laptop because I'm using the laptop more lately.
In any case, I don't care if it has a cord or not, as long as it's a trackball thumbup

I have enver used a trackball mouse like the one you are describing, but i supose, just as with any other mous, you get to used to it after a while, it is hard to use anything else!.. I personally am in love with my optical mouse, and love the fact that i cn use it on any surface, that it doesn't have the problem with the ball underneath catching it i am on an unven surface, and i don't have to take it apart to clean it (i have cats, and their hair gets everywhere!!) It's not so hard to adjust back to a regular mouse, such as at work, but the hardest adjustment i have to use it when i come across a computer with a mouse that doesn't have a scroll wheel. I use that soooo often and it is such an inconveinence to me to have to actually roll over to the scroll bars and hit the button to move the screen!!

myLot reputation of 100/100. arkaf61 (5809)   ranked 143 out of 6,367 in computer  3 years ago

Yes, it is always a matter of what we are used to. And I got used to the trackball ones LOL
I actually like the fact that it is much more comfortable for me. No pain in wrist or arm.Plus I feel more control when I'm doing small things. Some people don't like to use them for graphics but I really feel I have better control with my mouse.

myLot reputation of 98/100. fruitcakeliz (968)   ranked 2,115 out of 6,367 in computer  3 years ago

I actually am in love with the mouse i currently have, and the best part about it? I didn't pay a thing for it! lol

I got it free after signing up online at "rheumatoidarthritis.com" (i don't know if the offer is still there or not). I love my online freebie sites. This mouse is an optical mouse, with the scroll wheel, but what makes it awesome is it's design. The back part of the mouse, where you rest the palm of your hand, has a large rounded gel-filled ball, so it just fits inside your hand so comfortable. No cramping in your hand or wrist after using it for long periods of time.

the one you describe seems to be extremely comfortable in the hand. And it being free even better LOL

i haven't used the new trackball mouse yet(laugh) i used to work and play with mechanical and optical mouse for ten years, i don't change my habit easily, but i will try to use trackball mouse, it should be more clever and convenient(laugh)

myLot reputation of 100/100. arkaf61 (5809)   ranked 143 out of 6,367 in computer  3 years ago

Yes, it's really a matter of what one is used to. When people feel comfortable with something they prefer not to change.
I know people that tell me they were never able to get used to my kind of mouse, and I understand that.
In my case I can use both, but really prefer the one I have:)

I have a cordless optical trackball device, but as much as I like it, it is not comfortable for sustained use, and I also have a nasty habit of leaving it off the charger and therefore being rendered mouseless, so I find myself using a different style most of the time. In fact, the one I like best is corded. My graphics pad is cordless though. I usually have 4 pointing devices connected, counting the built-in glide pad.

myLot reputation of 100/100. arkaf61 (5809)   ranked 143 out of 6,367 in computer  3 years ago

My graphics table is corded and so is my mouse. I even take the big one and use it in the laptop LOL. I am sure that there are very good cordless mice for sale, but so far I haven't been completely satisfied with any of the ones I got. They're ok for regular stuff, like surfing the web or click on things here and there, but when I need precision it hasn't worked well.
Wich graphics pad do you have?

myLot reputation of 96/100. drannhh (9911)  3 years ago

Wacom Intuos III. It is nice but the one I'm using now takes up too much room and is slower than my little one, which is at our other place. Bummer.

I have the bamboo fun. The other ones were a bit more expensive.
I had a bit of a problem adapting to the small area at the beginning ( and I got the medium LOL ) . But all in all I love it :)

Yes, not everyone like the same thing. People like what they are used to mostly :)

I will have to take a look at the Image Twin as I am not sure what a Trackball Mouse is, I do not use one now as I use the Mouse on the Laptop, but I used to use the Mouse with no ball, infrared and cordless, I just could not stand the Cord being there all the time lol

myLot reputation of 100/100. arkaf61 (5809)   ranked 143 out of 6,367 in computer  3 years ago

Yes the cord is really annoying specially when we have so many cords behind the desk already. But I find that while the wireless ones are ok just for regular stuff, when I want to play with my graphics or play a game sometimes they are not as good.

Hi there!happy

I've used a trackball and an optical mouse and I find them both user friendly hehe.lol However, they still have their differences.

Trackball mouse are best for those who draw. I make cross stitch patterns and the trackball is perfect for I don't need to move my whole hand to get from one side to the other. It's less tiring cause I only have to my finger and my finger are more steady than my hand.

On the other hand optical mouse needs lesser maintenance. No balls to clean hehe. Optical mouse has also replaced trackballs I think and most stores doesn't carry trackballs anymore.

Ciao!wink

myLot reputation of 100/100. arkaf61 (5809)   ranked 143 out of 6,367 in computer  3 years ago

Yes, that's exactly why I like my trackball. It works better for me when I draw.
I was still able to find one at tiger direct and I'll keep it as reserve LOL

myLot reputation of 99/100. iskayz (3145)   ranked 1,563 out of 6,367 in computer  3 years ago

Oh so you draw too? lolWell, what kind of drawings do you make?

I have been keeping my trackball mouse too. It's hard to get one these days. It was also given to me by my brother who is an architect and from him is where I got the idea of using a trackball mouse.

I have not ever used a trackball for any period of time. I have seen laptops with them built in. I can see where they would be very comfortable. I may have to try one.I would suggest shopping online for one, if your local sources do not have them. I hope you find just what you need.

myLot reputation of 100/100. arkaf61 (5809)   ranked 143 out of 6,367 in computer  3 years ago

I found them still at tiger direct and got one as reserve hehe
Of course I can get used to the other ones again, but while I still have my trackball I'll be happy :)

I never used a trackball mouse. I thought you meant the ball in the bottom of the mouse. But it does look really handy to look through web pages. I have to clean out the lint and dust on the bottom ball of my mouse.

myLot reputation of 100/100. arkaf61 (5809)   ranked 143 out of 6,367 in computer  3 years ago

It sure is comfortable for me. Some people might not like it. It probably depends on the size of the hands as well.
It's very easy to clean too and I found it much more durable that the regular old ones. I used to have to get a new mouse often since I have this one, about 5 years ago, I have not yet had the need to get a new one.
