I am a child of the 80's. (Born in 1980) The 80's were so cool to grow up in! I remember using Trapper Keepers to keep my homework together. Some of my favorite movies include "Sixteen Candles," "Ferris Bueller's Day Off," and "The Great Outdoors." And who can't forget "Vacation??" And the music! Ah, the music....Tears For Fears, Def Leppard, Poison, Cyndi Lauper, The Smiths.....The fashion, the hair, haha what a cool decade! What do you remember from the 80's? Did you enjoy that era or not really, or maybe not all? What comes to mind for you?

I was born in 1980as well. It was the good times to me-Michael Jackson!! I did not listen to the same bands as you mentioned, but the 80s were good.

myLot reputation of 97/100. princess07031980 (1849)   ranked 164 out of 32,962 in life  3 years ago

Oh yes, Michael Jackson had a great influence on the 80's. I remember hearing his music at the time and thinking it was pretty cool. But when I became an adult, I disliked him greatly (him himself and his music.) But yes-he streaked the 80's for sure with the whole Moon Walk thing and everything.

myLot reputation of 99/100. cyrus123 (3255)   ranked 2,846 out of 32,962 in life  3 years ago

I liked Michael Jackson back then, myself. I didn't like him any more in the later years, though. Kathy.

I am not really sure why he took such a tiwst in his image, but he was a totally different animal 25 years ago. Heck, he evolved so much differently from even the 80's back from the 70's. It seems strange that someone in the public can be reinvented so often-and for the worse each time. LOL

Lol, oh god, the dreaded 80's! I was born much earlier but I became teenager in the early 80's. I was even in a hair band for a few years...(no, not posting pics, lol). Things I remember thinking were pretty cool back then:
The "walkman"
the "rockman" (a tiny headphone guitar amp
Finaly got a microwave
VHS tapes and machines
My first computer.....a commadore 64 lol.
Music was probably the biggest thing impacting my life at the time. I am a musician so I supose thie is natural. My tastes varied. I was a huge fan of the 70's hrder edged rock like early def lepard, judis priest, as well as progressive stuff like styx, kansas and rus. I was in to the hair band music a little, but was really more atracted to a new emrging type of music in the 80's, "speed metal". I was really in to metallica, slayer, anthrax, overkill and the like. I liked it because it was a natural progression from earlier influencesx like motor head, pile driver, venom and such
Thanks for the nostagia.

LOL, I figured it would dig up some old memories. Metallica, oh yes, how could I forget? "Ride the Lighting" is my favorite album. And they are timeless, and still played everywhere today.

I remember this mini skirt outfit I had that I wore with leg warmers!! lol
And dressing like cyndi lauper and madonna....it was a great decade!
Guys with mullets everywhere!!
Fun times!

I loved leg warmers! And who can forget the awesome look of spandex?? LOL Or how about putting the two together, and then throwing your ponytail off to the side?

happy Hi Princess. Every decade seems to have it's unique coolness, yes? In the 80s I was in my 30s, but my oldest daughters were coming of age, so I do remember those things you've mentioned as favorites of theirs, which I also enjoyed with them...from a mother's perspective, of course. And there's not been a single decade through which I've lived that I did not fall in love with some of the music, styles, etc.

My own coming of age was the decade of the 60s, but I'm thinking most by now are familiar with that era and all the changes, civil rights movements, innovations and protests and the music and such that came with it. thumbup

I am in love with all decaded too-I actually listen to something from every decade, and really don't have a preference from the 60's all the way to the 90's, it really just depends on my mood. I just recently picked up the 40th anniversary release of Woodstock, and I think out of any time frame with an event that I wished I could have attended, it would have been that.

myLot reputation of 100/100. PeacefulWmn9 (3480)   ranked 38 out of 32,962 in life  3 years ago

thumbup Yes, Woodstock was a powerful event attended by 10s of thousands more than was anticipated. They were wonderful, scary great days of change and growth.

Happy day to you. happy

I graduated high school in 1984, and I remember that decade very well. Izod shirts, parachute pants, skinny ties, and crayon shoes. Hair Bands, Rubik's Cube, The Challenger explosion, and the start of Mtv. It all had a profound effect on what was to come. :)

myLot reputation of 83/100. xfahctor (7623)   ranked 2,592 out of 32,962 in life  3 years ago

myLot reputation of 97/100. princess07031980 (1849)   ranked 164 out of 32,962 in life  3 years ago

Yes, MTV and VH1 were both once excellent networks that offered a lot. Now there are very few things to see on them. Although on Vh1, I do enjoy seeing the "song" shows, like "One Hit Wonders" and other shows. "I Love the 70's" and "I Love the 80's" were reaaly good documentaries too, with various famous people helping make fun of everything!

Oh what comes to mind....

Atari, my family owning its first VHS player and microwave, jelly shoes, florescent clothing, the beginning of hyper color clothing, teased/ratted hair, synth pop, wearing a tank top under a tank top that's gathered in the back between the shoulder blades, D.A.R.E., Care Bears, plastic charm bracelets and necklaces, John Hughes movies, Nintendo, The Goonies, when Adam Walsh disappeared and how many kids got scared after seeing the made for tv movie about it, TMNT, all of the music groups named in the original posts, those little cardboard framed mirrors that were given away at carnivals with pictures of metal groups on them, The Lost Boys, Girl Scout lock ins / overnight events at the local mall, Pee Wee Herman movies and Pee Wee's Playhouse (gag!!!!), ALF, WGN and some station out of St. Louis were the biggest stations broadcasting on cable (where I lived anyway), late night horror flicks on tv instead of informecials, cheesy horror/thriller flicks (I watch some of the crap that scared me back then because I was little today and just laugh at myself), MTV actually played music videos - California Girls by David Lee Roth is the first one I ever watched on MTV, Beverly Hills Cop & Die Hard movies.... pouofy skirts, Punky Brewster, how people used to dress up in big costumes from shows like the Smurfs or that silly robot (alfie?) and go to malls and fast food places to do meet and greets, after school specials, saturday morning cartoons actually lasted until 11am or noon, Rainbow Brite, Moondreamers...Gummi Bears.... holy I think I ran out of ideas!

myLot reputation of 97/100. princess07031980 (1849)   ranked 164 out of 32,962 in life  3 years ago

Haha, you are defintiely one who lived the 80's and loved it huh?? I was thinking of this subject as I was waiting in the car picking up my kids from school today, and a few of the things you mentioned I had thought of while brewing it up!! DARE and Care Bears were two that immediately came to mind, but I figured, this is a forum, so I left lots of opportunities for members to chime in! Of course not that I know everything from the 80's, as I surely don't. Oh, and I loved Pee-Wee's Playhouse when I was a kid, but anymore the guy creeps me out. LOL And After School Specials as you also mentioned-when there really wasn't anything else on to watch at 3:30 PM, so we all watched why it's important to stay drug free... Wow.....the 80's....LOL

myLot reputation of 94/100. zoey7879 (2311)   ranked 4,211 out of 32,962 in life  3 years ago

lol

I got my daughter, who's two by the way, stuck on alot of the toys and cartoons from the 80s... but then again, I think that most of the cartoons from the 80s are "far fecthed" as a cartoon should be vs. many of the ones today.

myLot reputation of 97/100. princess07031980 (1849)   ranked 164 out of 32,962 in life  3 years ago

My daughter went through a huge Care Bear phase, and she had olver 15 stuffed animals. And of course, Cabbage Patch Kids came back too, after not seeing them on the market for a while either. And Transformers came back as a box office hit a few years ago.

That was a really bad period in my life. I had gone through a bitter divorce and lost everything in a one sided property settlement, and so turned to the bottle. To cap it all off my ex moved houses without telling me, and I had to find my ywo children. A period of my life I'd rather forget. Give me the fifties, or sixties anytime.

I remember the movie, "Sixteen Candles" but I don't remember the others you mentioned. That was a good movie, though. I also remember "The Breakfast Club" and "La Bamba". Those were both good movies. I had a bookstore from 1984 to 1986 and we rented movies and vcrs. We had The Breakfast Club. Oh yes, I remember Cyndi Lauper. Her picture was on the front of a lot of magazines we had. I thought she was cute but I didn't particularly like her wild style. I guess I'm a little old fashioned, lollol! I remember the curly permanents becuase I had a couple of those. Kathy.

The 80's were defintiely dawning of a new metal for sure. What about Whitesnake, Warrant, Damn Yankees, Guns N Roses? All classics of the 80's....and they carried that great, great hair. And some had some of the best make-up jobs I have ever seen!! LOL
