Well, I am 24 years old and know that I have A WHOLE BUNCH more to learn. I have discovered that there are so many people in the world who have addictions. For a while I thought it was just drugs, but there is a whole realm of addictions. One that has caught my attention is shopping. I hate to see my friends who are struggling so bad in the economy go out on a shopping spree because it makes them feel better. I have one friend in particular who does that and then she will ask her brother who is my boyfriend to borrow money. I try to tell him to stop loaning her money, but he keeps doing it because him mom told him to always look out for his family and she just recently died.
What are some addictions that you have experienced or see someone else experiencing?

1. darkjedi1 (752) | 5 months ago | Hey:D Welcome back:D
Well I smoke, so that could be considered one lol. I used to use drugs a lot but wasnt addicted to it perse. Ive seen lots of people with the shopping addiction and drugs and alcohol before though. That sucks your boyfriend wont stop, looking out for your family doesnt really mean in that way.

latoyahall (400) | 4 months ago | The cost of cigarettes is outrageous these days. I know here in Rhode Island they are 8 dollars a pack. Thats enough to get some people to quit. How much do they cost in your neck of the woods?

|
darkjedi1 (752) | 4 months ago | Damn 8 dollars? Jeez, yeah I think I would quit too then lol. They are around 4.70 or so here.

2. maezee (4411) | 5 months ago | I think I've been addicted to a couple of different things: shoplifting (when I was a pre-teen; no joke) - it took a prosecution to get me to wake up to it and get help (I got counseling and have thus channeled my need for an obsession into a different channel!!) Other than that, I used to be bulimic for about 3 1/2 years..Which is a crazy-addictive behavior & lifestyle if you ask me (although medically they don't consider it an "addiction" per say). To me it felt like one, though, and still does occasionally. It's like having another side of yourself that's always telling you what to do and that you NEED to do something (whatever you're addicted to) to be whole. It's scary from a first-hand point of view as well as watching someone else experience it.
Otherwise, I have addictions all around me - both of my parents are bona-fide alcoholics (and have been since I was a child), and I have a distant cousin who has recently re-surfaced in my life and is addicted to CRACK - and some of my family members feel BAD for her and thus BORROW HER MONEY. It's outrageous if you ask me!! It's the same situation with your boyfriend borrowing his sister money - pretty much, they're encouraging her (them) to spend it on their addictions - which is unhealthy! My idea is that addicts can WANT to change. They can CHOOSE to take that first step in recovering and getting better; and even though it's hard, it's not impossible. And partially, addictions are immature/irresponsible. I think they need to find out the hard way that their family isn't ALWAYS going to be there for them. If I was your brother, I would refuse to borrow her any money so she can shop. In fact, I would try to blackmail her into getting help or joining a 12 step program. It seems harsh, but I think people who have these kinds of addictions (where they rely on others for support) need a reality check.

| lstreet60 (13) | 5 months ago | Wow maezee, you're going to think this is trivial but I was addicted to buying movies, sometimes new sometimes used. My living room looks like a movie rental store. I've had to make myself stop because at work, they cut my hours and my boyfriend got laid off. I still look what new movies are out. I just know I can't buy right now. When things at work change or if they change I'll probably go back to buying movies. It doesn't really hurt anyone, I guess. I don't drink(too much), smoke or do drugs(illegal ones) I have epilelpsy. I do have an addiction but I think I've got it handled.

MachaMongRuad (149) | 4 months ago | Please don't be offended or upset, but this bothered me and I feel compelled to correct it.
The person who is giving money to someone is LENDING it. The person the money is being given to is BORROWING it.

latoyahall (400) | 4 months ago | It's tough, I love to be on the computer, but I have two children that keep me in check, they need my attention! Drug addiction is a huge problem. I know several people who just can't quit...it is so sad, especially when they are close to you and you want to help them, but you know that they have to want to stop in order to get the help they need.

5. carolbee (6738) | 4 months ago | I'm a smoker and that's a horrible addiction. I do know others who have problems with shopping and gambling. Both can be devistating and have effected others lives as well. I know of two men who loved to gamble. They both owned restaurants. They stole from their business and took the money gambling. Both lost their homes, cars and all furniture and other assets. It was a major mess. One continues to gamble but don't know about the other since I'm not close friends with either. Shopping in stores and online can also cause major problems. Don't think I know anyone personally who does either or both and has caused financial problems.

6. nonersays (151) | 4 months ago | I have an addiction to the computer/internet. I actually get cranky if I have to go more than a day without logging on.
I also have a caffeine addiction, and my hubby is addicted to DVDs. I can't get him to stop buying them even though we both know we don't have the cash for it anymore!

7. astonysh (1824) | 4 months ago | Addictions - I am sitting in front of one for starters. Training myself to switch off the PC is a great challenge.
I have also seen people devoting hours daily to computer games, including some that are so mind-numbing, I cannot imagine that anyone with any sense would want to spend more twenty seconds on the activity.
Then there is television - and the people who cannot bear to switch it off!

8. sanuanu (3905) | 4 months ago | My addictions. At first when I entered my teen age I thought I will keep myself away from girls and all type of drugs, including wine, smoke, drugs etc.
Well, I succeed because today I don't have any such addictions but in the process, I realized that I have addictions for video games and movies. I have spent almost 13 hours a day in those two things since the age of 15 to 22. Still I have video games addictions. Till last year I have been playing on PS2!
So, that is an addiction. Other than that I don't have any gf nor any addiction towards shopping. I love my money, I cna't just spend all of them on a single day!

latoyahall (400) | 4 months ago | Thank You! I think that all addictions make people forget about their problems while they are in that moment, but after it is done they feel bad, so they keep doing it because they think that it will make up for the badness they felt when they did it before.
