What is the longest or shortest time you have spent in one house?

I've calculated that I have moved house around twelve times since I left home at the age of 21 which... Ehhhmm...Was a few years ago...Ehhhmm...Each move was a little more difficult than the one before because, as we all do, I had more and more belongings accumulated and the fact that one is shifting house is not enough to entice hoarder like myself to get rid of some of that ‘just in case I need it’ stuff.
We’ve been in our house here for the past nine years and the mere thought of a move is daunting and unlikely for quite a while.
Just curious...How many times have you changed residence? What is the longest of shortest time you have spent in the one place?

Ten months is not too bad at least you got a few months out of all the trouble of moving. You must love where you are now, I prefer to stay in one place if I like it. Thanks ElicBxn!

Well I guess technically speaking I've moved only twice in my life. My father's side of the family were in California (where I was born) while my mother's here in NY area...when they got divorced when I was only a year and a half my mother went to live with her grandmother and mother until age five, then my mother, grandmother and I moved here in this apartment I'm still living in since 1961
Back in 1970 I suggested the idea of us moving into a larger apt as this one is kind of small, but my mother not a great one for change made me as the excuse...that "Oh, you're still in school and it would be hard to change schools." Like duh? I wasn't suggesting we move to Osh Kosh, Wisconsin...just a larger apt in the building or neighborhood. Now, with rents being so ridiculously high, most people don't move--my rent is relatively low since I've been here for so long

That is a long time to be in the one place Pye, it must be right for you and the rent being low would be the greatest advantage in this day and age.
I moved from one rented place to another for years, spent some time overseas, more rented places and when I got married we bought our first home which we loved until we learnt the council had plans to widen the road which would have resulted in us losing half of our front yard so we sold the house to the Ministry Of Planning after much negotiating which took over a year and bought the house we live in now which is in a much quieter area and right across the road from the school which is ever so handy!
As much as I dream of a property in the country, which I can't afford, we have no plans to move again for a very long time, besides we have a lot of mortgage repayments to make!

Hi paula, I lived in Hawthorn until I was in my mid twenties, when I spent a year overseas. In Thailand, we stayed in one house for only a few months. As for how many, well I'd need a calculator to tally that.

I have to move at the moment, as we are house sitting. However, when my two years in Australia are up, then I will move back to my premanent home back in Thailand.

Sounds as though you have moved a few times, (LOL)! I used to move around a lot years ago and now that I have been here a few years and the older I get the more daunting is the prospect of shifting again!

If I remembered all the places I've lived and calculated it correctly, I've moved about 20 times since I've moved out of my parents place when I was just 16 years old. I've lost quite a bit of stuff from moving that I'll never be able to recover. Especially when my house caught fire and burnt to the ground. That's the one where I lost my fiance and three of our pets which was 18 and a half years ago. Since then, I've accumulated a lot of stuff and am doing fine and hate the thought of ever moving again!! lol But I know I will eventually..... ugh.

Yeah....
in upstate NY in a rinky dink small town called Bath. Plus there's Hammondsport and Cohocton. It's up around the finger lakes. I moved there with my ex just before Christmas in '85 and moved back in July of the following year.

I forgot to add!!
The longest I've lived in one place was 6 years which was our first home in Texas. The shortest would have to be the apartment in New York which was about 6 months.

Wow, Paula...12 times is sure a lot. But awesome.. I can only imagine what is must be like. And you are right; daunting is what I thought too. For me, I changed residence like perhaps close to 5 times. Not much, anyway. My parents were not really avid movers, LOL..though I'd love for them to be, so that I could experience different things each time. But what I misses the most were my very friendly neighbors. Good neighbors are really priceless and hard to come across. Most neighbors like to keep to themselves and even if there are friendly ones, they are nosy ones. LOL...

It's really my pleasure..
That's right.. me too, unless I win in a lucky draw and with a Grand prize or something, I'll consider 10 times before moving, LOL....
Neighbors are more precious than relatives, because when we are in trouble, neighbors are just beside us to help..

That is so true, good neighbours are so important...We know the people who live next door and I have their home phone number just in case I need them whenever my husband is away and my daughter and I are home on our own; it is a good feeling to know there is someone very close by that I can call.

I am not planning on moving again for a long, long time now! The only thing that would entice me to move would be if I won the lottery! (LOL) Good neighbours are a treasure, I know because years ago I had the unfortunate experience of rude, noisy inconsiderate neighbours! Thanks for being here zed!

My mom is a moveabout..lol she moves several times a year. I hate moving and been where I currently live for 13 years. I think the shortest time I lived somewhere was little less then a week. We moved into an apartment when I was 10..landlord tried to get frisky with my mom and My parents moved.

!3 years is the longest I have ever stayed in one spot in my 35 years of life. But the landlord was drunk at the time, but still it doesn't excuse such behavior.

I guess the longest time I ever spent in one house was when I was growing up and living with my parents. From the age of four to fourteen we lived in one house. It was a perfectly nice house, but when I have nightmares, they almost always take place in that house. It's odd.

I would guess it is the house that you remember the most because of childhood experiences that occurred there, who knows...The subconscious is a strange thing...Thanks for adding to my discussion Alice, I appreciate it!

Hello paula. The longest time I lived in a house was the one where I was brought up in my parents' for twenty years and the shortest one was the one where we rented for a few years about five years. Then we bought our own house in 2002 and have been living in our new house ever since. I am not sure whether we will get another new house some day in another city.

moving is a scary process--new area, new people and a new lifestyle. everyone gets accustomed to their old ways of life that change becomes hard to adapt to.
but people usually get used to it, unless the place they move to really sucks.
i lived in maryland for 1 year, then to wv for 7 years then to a cali house for 6 years, and then to college dorm for 2 years, and then to my current cali townhouse for 23 years because i am not sure where to go from here. so. cali has nice mild weather, not too cold and not too hot, and with a nice breeze. so, i guess, the weather has kept me here for a long time.

I think that if you find a place that you like you are better off staying there especially if the weather is pleasant. Thanks fifileigh for your response!

It is nice to stay put if you have moved a lot in your life. It can all get too much and each move seems more difficult than the last one, could be because there is a lot more stuff each time! Thanks for responding VANILLAREY!

I spent almost 18 years in one house where I was born. In fact it was my parent’s first house too. When I was 18 years I left home to university. When I came back home for summer holiday, my parents moved to another house. So I have had no chance back to the old house again.
The shortest house I have stayed was my house in the UK. I just stayed there less than 3 months then we moved to our current house. Now I have stayed here for about 2 years. I don’t know how long I will stay here.

It is a lot of trouble moving isn't it? I have hated it every time I've done it. I guess if the time to move on comes you will know it and hopefully it will somewhere nice. Thanks for responding sblossom!

Our shortest time was 3 months. We moved across the country and stayed in a horrible little roach-infested apartment until a better place could be found.
We have now been in this house for 21 years. Frankly, I hope we never move - I don't want to think about all the stuff that's been stored away and forgotten about!

I know what you mean! The last time I moved I had more stuff than ever and I did not have my daughter then! If we had to move now we have more plus all her stuff, it would be a nightmare so I am quite happy to stay put!
Thanks for the response jashoaf!

Hi Paula, I've moved 5 times in my life. The longest that I've stayed in one place has got to be my current residence. I've been here for almost 14 years now. The shortest I've stayed in one place was about a year, more or less, though I didn't keep tabs on it, so I can't say for certain. But it was close to a year, I think.
Happy mylotting!

You can't say you never will have your own house, you're only young and I'm sure the opportunity will come when the time is right. Unfortunately nowadays it is not a cheap exercise to shift house. Living with your family is a lot more financially secure at the moment I think. Thanks for responding!
