Do you think that it is safe to do financial transactions and banking on internet. What precautions should be taken if we are going for online transactions? How to protect ourselves from fraudlant websites?

i dont think it is pretty much safe to bank on internet bcoz these days the crime rates are going very high especially the cyber crime. one may say that 90% people here on internet causes scamming or once are scammed.even i am one of the victims.
the important protection according to me would be the safeguard of your password, give a long password and do not keep the pass word in your pc bcoz may be some spyware acts on your pc and gets the password.
about scamming websites, i can only say...check its ratings or comments of other people.

thanks for the response. I am also of your view that safety of our financial transactions are in our hand. Either we do not do internet banking else if we want to do internet banking we should adopt all recommended guidelines before starting online transactions. We must not skip any guideline

It's just as safe to bank online as it is to bank otherwise. Most, if not all, banks have online sites now. Think about this. How many times do you write a check at a store? So the store has your checking account number, bank name, address and routing number. How many times do mail a check to pay a bill? So anyone can grab it, take your account number, bank name, address and routing number.
If you do it online, no one but the bank will ever see it.
Sure, there have been a few instances of hacked accounts. There have been a few instances of bank robberies, too.

I do all my banking on the net and have never had a problem. In fact, I don't know anybody first hand who has. Banks themselves, though, that's another issue. I have been ripped off and known others who have been ripped off by banking institutions. I now bank with a customer-owned building society.

Frankly speaking i really dont believe banking on internet, i prefer going to a bank by myself or an ATM for any transactions.I have seen many fraudlent cases of my known ones whose accounts had been hacked and a huge amount had been taken away, banks also hardly pay you the whole amount otherwise they might not.If you have a genuine anti virus, anti spyware, spamware, firewall then you might be safer at some extent with the help of all these, but still there are chances.

I too never believed in internet banking. I use to do transactions from my ATM Debit card and Credit card. They are safer then internet banking. Many cases of internet banking fraud have came up and people fear to do even a single internet transaction. Technology has changed rapidly but still lot has to be done for proper safety of internet banking.
