[b]Anyone who's ever camped out has likely run into "The Ugly Camper (TUC)."
That's the person, or group of persons who drive up next to your spot out in the pristine, gloriously peaceful natural spot you've chosen, the better to find peace, then proceed(s) to make your whole outdoor experience miserable.
They're worse than loud; they have big boom boxes playing loud music (even if you like the kind they play, you still can't hear yourself think, nor hear the nearby waterfall or birds!), even though they could've at least used earphones...they "share" it with the planet.... They bring all their home comforts with them, so they can watch TV, play volleyball, in general disturb you. If all they wanted was to bring their living room with them & not enjoy nature, it begs the question: why the heck didn't they just stay home??
They're often full of foul speech, too. And they gouge up clumps of wild flowers for replanting at home. They litter, trashing out the area. Their rug rats brought fire crackers. Oh, joy. They get pickled & throw bottles & cans at any wildlife they see, scaring them off. Carve their initials into trees, sometimes even stripping bare limbs to burn in their campfires, which they leave unattended, & leave burning when they finally go, as well.
If no Forest Ranger is around to put a stop to all this, what do you do? Leave? Confront them? That could be dangerous. Report them if you have a good cell phone? What?
Is there a good cure for TUC syndrome? Other than an Uzi, I mean?
Do you know any UCs? Are you one? If so, what's your excuse for such boorish behavior?
Talk to me, fellow MyBotters!

Oh the memories, lol. It was one of the main reasons I stopped camping at commercial camp grounds. I found the smaller ones were more likely to toss someone out like that, and when I could, I didn't even use camp grounds, I just camped on land that belonged either to some friends of mine or my families land in the next town over.
To me, camping is just me, a tent and a camp fire, though at my age I have now added a cot to that list, I hate getting up off the ground in the morning. It is usualy quiet, relaxing and peacefull. Granted, I have "party-camped" before, plenty of times, but it was always just our group and on private land where we weren't going to bother anyone but the first person to pass out (and goddes help that poor soul, lol).
Some of my other pet peves with campers include, but aren't limited to....huge fires burning completely out of control....kids that aren't put to bed at a reasonable hour.....destruction of live trees when perfectly good and dry (and better) fire wood is available on the ground....the throwing of discadred food on the ground (attracts bears).....kids at a camp pool unattended by adults.....dozens of patio lights glaring and ruining my peacefull darkness.....the parking of 20 cars, boats, 4 wheelers and such, crowding me in and taking up nearly half the camp ground....drunk lost people staggering through my camp site, knocking over tent poles and tripping over guide ropes and getting mad at ME because THEY are too drunk to watch where they are going.....kids using axes to cut fire wood.......that one woman with the spine wrenching cackling laugh who always seems to find the camp ground I am staying at, no matter where it is.....and please people, please, I know your out in "nature" and that we're all mammals, but this isn't the discovery channel and I politely request you keep it to a volume that doesn't permit it to make it's way to my camp site, I'm not getting any tonight and I don't need to hear proof that YOU are.

LOL You poor thing! I take it you camp in an RV park or something like that? If so, experiences like this are going to happen no matter what. We belong to a private club that used to be a rock quarry many moons ago that someone turned into a beautiful and very popular fishing area that has a beach, picnic areas and loads of camp sites for both RVs and tent camping. Needless to say, we like our privacy so we've discovered a few campsites that are very primitive so never have anyone camping close by. Hubby bought a cheap pop-up camper this past spring and after the first time camping with it, I'm going back to my tent. Camper would be fine for cold-weather camping but not for hot weather. I was miserable in it and longed for my tent. We going this weekend and I'm packing my tent. Btw...if your in a camping park of sorts, you can take their license plate number down and report them right away to the owners/caretakers or maybe even to the police. Those people should of been considerate and pick a spot some distance from you so as not to be a disturbance.
Better luck next time camping!

[b]Actually, I was only mining my past for discussion fodder; I haven't been camping for ages. Health doesn't permit...but, hey, now that they've come up with battery-op oxygen condensers that are very portable, should I find a willing partner with a car (relax, Elic, you know I'm not hinting!), I can at least dream it could happen again!
And no, I've rarely camped out at one of those rent-a-spot campsites. I'm speaking (from sad experience) of more remote places, where one has a reasonable expectation of peaceful, safe silence! It did't happen often that I was plagued with UCs, but when it did, it was so frikkin' annoying!

My camera goes with me everywhere. Most of the time I get the greatest shots. Other times I get choice video clips to upload to any video site I can find along with the name of the campers, license plates, MANAGEMENT and other personnel who did NOTHING to resolve the situation... etc... or joined in. (case I'm talking about: bus load of folks came in to the lot next to me, LOADED with pot, smoking publicly, brandishing knives, loud).
Then you take your videos and upload them, etc. (Even better if you turn copies over to the establishments they work for... as well as the local police...) I figure if that guy from GirlsGoneWild can do it, why can't I?

I've run into many kinds of campers like this. Often I will just ignore it as long as possible, although sometimes they've driven me to leave early from camping. Sometimes I've found campsites that don't allow trailers or electronics, and don't have any electricity, just a water spicket. I prefer these campsites a lot because they don't attract "TUC"s.

usually where I have gone camping, there are rules that each camper must sign. If people do not follow the rules, they're thrown out. Since I'm usually by myself, I usually get a site next to the people who own the camp or next to the Forest Ranger or whoever runs the site at night. So I haven't had to deal with TUC. When my Mom was alive, we went to Old People's Camping, no one under 65 unless accompanied by someone 65 or older. It was a very nice camping experience. No one was loud. Miss my Mom.
