So not even a year ago we decided to get some guinea pigs as pets. I thought they would be easy to clean and care for and yes they were but obviously not for my son who was supposed to look after them. He decided that they were going to be his pets and he was going to play with them, clean them out and look after them. Needless to say that after some time he did none of these things and it was all left to me. Every time we have gone away for a week here and a week there I have had to find someone to look in on them and feed them every day. I gave my son one final chance to proove to me that he still wanted them but he blew it and so I passed them onto someone who would be able to give them a better home. I was sad to see them go because I had become attached to them even if my kids hadn't!! They were never neglected but they certainly didn't come out of the cage as often as they should have and I thought that was unfair on them.

Have you ever had to get rid of a pet unwillingly?

Yes, a dog. It stunk. I hated it, but she had a better home than I could have given her at the time.

I love guinea pigs! We had 5, four were old and died so we only have one left. :(

Hey there geturgreenadmin and welcome to myLot

I think guinea pigs are lovely animals and make lovely pets I really do, they have a lovely temperament too. I am a single mum to 3 boys and it was just one more thing to look after as I was hoping my son was going to do as he said he would. They were our first pet so I guess we did ok for a while.

Thanks for responding thumbup

Yes, I have. It was during my junior year in high school. I was assigned to take care of some rats for my biology teacher during the spring break. This was so I could get extra credit, and not have to take the class over again. Everything went great, and I stuck to my end of the bargain. One day, while I was hanging out with some friends, my youngest brother put his hand in the cage to hold one. The rat bit him, so he took it upon himself to squeeze the life out of it. Now, I was down one rat. When spring break was over, I brought the rats back to my teacher, even though I was starting to get attached to them. She asked what happened, and I told her. Needless to say, I did pass the class. However, I had to pay for the dead rat. That was definitely a learning experience for me

No but I'm sad to say one died on us. It was a black kitten I got for Dale when he was about 4. I stupidly agreed to taking the runt of the litter because I fell in love with him and felt sorry for him. I thought loving care would be all he needed but one day his intestines started to come out of his behind and soon afterwards he died. Dale loved him too, I have a photo of him holding him somewhere.

Hi 'a'

You know that was one of my fears, coming downstairs one morning to find the guinea pigs with their feet in the air! Not through anything we had done but a fews years or so down the road when the inevitable happens due to old age. That is a shame abou the kitten though, I remember you telling me about it before, it really is sad.

Cheers 'a'thumbup

myLot reputation of 93/100. aslanlight (1622)  3 years ago

Lol I'm wondering how they'd die on their backs, mid somersault or clinging to the top of the cage?

Dale wants a cat now but I'd have the same problem as you, I'd end up looking after it. And there'd be cat hairs everywhere, vet bills, expensive cat food, and it'd scratch the furniture to shreds!

One cat who was peeing and my husband threatened to take him to the pound, so I gave him back to the person I got him from. I really loved that cat too. When I came home from work he would jump right into my arms. If I had known then what I know now, I would have tried several other things. :-(

yes.. the first time i moved out on my own. i got two cats. one almost right after the other.. and stuff happened.. with boys whom i thought where friends, and things got stolen, and people got taken advantage of, and life just got way too out of hand, as it tends to do first time we experience freedom.. lol.. and when i moved back in with my mom.. the first time.. lol.. she said i couldnt only bring one. it was a hard decision, to choose one of those cats over the other.. but i'm sure the person who i gave the kitty to took good care of her. and my mother still has the one i brought to her house. haha. love mom! I learned from this. and i have not had a pet since..

Hi Sissygrl

As long as we learn from our mistakes I guess it is ok and you did make sure the cat went to a good home as I did with Rolo and Polo.

Hello ANTIQUELADY

At least with a dog it is easier to take with you, unless you go somewhere abroad of course, it's not so easy to cart a dirty great big cage around with you!!

Yes, years ago when I was a child we had to give away family pets, because me and my family were renting a house and we later found out the owner of the house didn't allow pets, and at the time we could not afford to move out, so we had no choice but to give our beloved family pets away. me and my sisters were very sad that day, I'll never forget that day.sadhappy

I did. when I was young we had 11 outdoor cats. these were including 3 kittens. things were ok when momma kitten still took care of her kittens, we fed the momma and gave the kittens nice and warm blankets to sleep on. they were still breatfeeding, very very small. then momma kitten started going out and mating, leaving the kittens on their own. my mom was upset and took her to a meat market, she was outdoor cat so she can eat at least from food and meat they threw out. but the kittens got worse every day, we fed them milk but they needed a female cat, and finally died. this is not the first momma kitten that we found irresponsible, and I cried everytime I remember the kittens. It's true that we might not need to separate them from each other, but we couldn't afford another kitten. we could let adult cats live outdoor but we wouldn't let kittens live out there.
I kept thinking that at least the kittens didn't die abused outside, like a lot of my cats. that's the only way I comfort myself or else I would cry forever. now I only have one cat and she is indoor. She was indoor as kitten so she is not a sneaky type trying to sneak out or something. She is really beautiful. Hubby said she will be the longest living cat I've ever had. I intend to make this happen, she is safer indoor than outdoor.

Hi ya LittleMel

Aww that is sad and horrible to see as a child. At least you have a lovely cat now that you can care for. The good thing about an indoor cat is that you won't have a problem with fleas or her fighting with other cats - or mating of course!

Aw, thats a shame, I'm sorry.

I love guinea pigs too and used to have one. Actually a good friend of mine in England runs a guinea pig rescue - she takes guinea pigs and rehomes them, finds them nice families, and has a few as pets herself which stay there. Ihave seen photos of her little 'pigs and they are adorable - and we frequently have great excitement waiting for one to have her babies, or when a new one is settling in, or finds a good home!

The only pet I have had to get rid of was my rabbit when I was young - we moved house to a place where we couldn't really keep her, and she was given to a family we knew.

Hi ya EnglishTeaDuck

Yes it was a realy shame but can honestly say that I felt a bit of relief not having to worry about finding someone to look after them all the time whilst we were away. Aww that was sad for you when you were younger then and we don't always understand why our pets have to be taken from us.

No, I never did and hopefully I never have to. It must so sad to be in this kind of situation. Pets are a part of our family. To give one away is like to part with our love one. It's a terrible situation to be in. Still, I know you have no choice. Let's hope Rolo and Polo will be happy in their new home.

myLot reputation of 98/100. Humbug25 (4577)   ranked 307 out of 19,273 in questions & answers  3 years ago

Hi there prinzcy

Yeah it's not good. I just felt it was so unfair on them as I didn't want them to become caged animals but pets but unfortunately because they were hardly let out that is what they did become. I have since spoken to the person who had them and he said they have settled in really really well.

Thanks thumbup
