I recently started a discussion about deer. And from some of the replies on there and obviously lots of stuff that I have faced in my life as well as learning from history lessons and books,it led me to start this discussion.

We all know about how the english came and took the land here in North America from the native american's.They came in here and took over, killed many native americans forced them away from their homes.Because they wanted the land to build their homes. As a child and I would watch in western movies where the native americans would kill white people and take over their homes. The native americans were made out to be the bad guys.Where in essence,if you look think about it and really look at they were only defending themselves and their land. Then I went to school and learned about the pilgrims coming from Europe,The Trail of Tears and realized that the native americans were not the bad guys after all.

Before The Trail of Tears,Cherokee people were forced to live in prison camps where many of them died of being shot, stabbed, getting disease and malnutrition. Then the president decided to forced them to walk from the east coast to the west in Oklaholma for thousands of miles. Many more native people died. Then they finally got to their destination. The president of the people that came and took over forced them to live where they wanted them to.They called it a reservation. They still do.Still today if native americans want to live how they want to live it must live in a reservation. The reservation are supposed to be free from the white mans laws. But,there was a native american,Leonard Peltier accussed of killing a white man official and they came onto a reservation, where they arrested him in 1977 and he is still in prison. He had a hearing for parole in August 2009,where he was denied. His next hearing cannot be till August of 2024!

I am part Cherokee and some of my ancestors are from Ireland. They settled in the county that I live in,located in Virginia.I have been told by people from other countries that I don't belong living in certain housing developments in this same county. Not only did my ancestors settle here, but I have lived here most of my life.

I have been told that I cannot feed the squirrels, deer are being killed by cars every day.Now they want to kill them in a park because there is too many of them.I believe in hunting. But,not killing them because they are there. That goes for animals and people of whatever nationality.

Yep,this is the land of the free, only for the ones that came in here and took over and the ones that are coming in here now trying to take over.Telling me that I do not belong here, saying that I have to learn their language and live my life the way they do.

How do you figure this is right?

Well your history is a little off and it would have been a King rather than a President I think but I see what you are saying.

The English can be a pretty ruthless race especially back then when England ruled a large part of the World.

Very sorry for the bad things my ancestors did to yours.

In the modern day USA I thought you were free to live where you want and speak whatever language you feel is right for you.
I don't know what language you would like to speak but I'm sure it would be ok although I have heard some bad stuff about President Obama from a few people so maybe I'm wrong in thinking you are from a democracyconfused

No,I do not have my history off.President Andrew Jackson ordered the capture and movement of the native americans.Kings were in Europe. Why are you saying that you have heard some bad things about President Obama? What's has any of this got to do with it? I speak english and when I lived in a neighborhood in the county that my ancestors settled in many years ago I was told by some people from a foreign country that I do not belong there.I should move very far away and learn their customs from their country.I was told by them and also by the county when I applied for a job with the county that I need to speak spanish.

It isn't right. I am part Native American too, some of my ancesters were forced to participate in the "Trail of Tears". Some of my ancesters decided to adopt "white man" ways and live as white men. Those ancesters lived on a reservation in Indiana. Still our land was stripped from us, we are still being denied. I am a member of The Great Nation Of Miami Indians of Indiana, we are an organized tribe. The govt. still is denying us our rights. I live in Northern Ohio, this land once belonged to my ancesters, in a treaty with "our" govt, this land was deeded to my ancesters, then it was taken away. Treaties were not worth the paper they were written on. If you haven't done it yet, it would be a good thing to prove your heritage, prove that you are Cherokee, I don't know if there would be any benefits to you, but hey its worth a try. My tribes status as a tribe was stipped from us, we as a tribe have been trying to get federal recognition, if that happens there might be govt benefits available to us.

You're right it is sad that happened. At least you are on your ancestors land.I started doing genealogy 26 years ago to find out who this woman was that my grandmother said was full blood Cherokee and she also said that she was one of her grandmother's.I have not been able to find out yet.Plus apparently my grandmother on my father's side was full blood Cherokee also and lived in Illinois all her life.I talked to my aunt and she said that she was not able to find all the information, but what she had she would send to me.And I have been waiting for about 10 years now.I keep reminding her.I have been trying. But,it is sad that the native americans were here first, but we have to prove ourselves to the government.

hi dfollin well I am sorry if any of my ancestors did yours wrong but I did no harm to anyone myself. and my ancestors came here from Enland and Scottland and Ireland. Also this is the landof the free and we can speak any language we choose. if you mean someone has insulted you that is just one person, nobody willstop you from sp eaking any language you choose. You are free to live anyway you wish, and whoever told you otherwise is a liar.I do think that our generation of Americans cannot be blamed for something that happened many many years before we were born.we cannot undo the past much as we may wish. to blame us for what happened then is useless And upsetting also.

Some of my ancestors also came from Scotland and Ireland.Unfortunatly, some of the Irish stopped in England and got married along the way.My point is that the english did that years ago. But,the origionals are still treated that way.Native Americans still have to live on the "reservations",that places they were told that they had to go if they want to live by their customs, laws and rules. They say that they (new americans) do not have any jurisdiction on these "reservations" yet they went on there and arrested Leonard Peltier.I am still told by people that are not even native american or english tell me that I had to earn their language and customs.I was denied a job in a county office because I did not speak spanish, even thou I had all the credentials and know how to do the job.And I already proved it too. This was not hundreds of years ago,it was about 15 years ago.

It is not just people,it's animals as well. All the land is taken away from them with roads and buildings.I seen deer killed on the side of the road on a daily basis. Now the park authority in our nations capital want's too shoot and kill the deer so there isn't so many of them.

i think that time has changed a lot. i too am a native of my own country and we were colonized by spaniards. history is history. i don't give too much issue who is native and who is not. and with modern times we have the same rights but of course if we hold on to our old culture and live a certain way that i could not live peacefully with the modern culture and so i better live somewhere else away from the city. and the native people who stick with their culture stays on isolated part but actually they liked to be part of the modern life. that they have new homes like the home we have now. and they tend to rich people also. cause they entertain tourist. they will just wear native dress and dance in front of the tourist and they get to earn a lot. and they have their own cars and get to wear their old or native dress and still enjoy the best of both worlds. and their children though is not any more living or dressed up like their fathers but still they still admit they are natives. so in essence what is part of history should only be for history to remember where we came from and not to divide us or the society.

That's the point it is not history.Just about 15 years ago I was denied a job that I trained for with the county government and because I did not speak spanish I was denied the job.I still have had people from other countries that come here, have more rights to assistance then I do.I have tried to get apartments before and was told that they had to give it to the foreign couple that applied for it because there is a quota number of how many foreign people can be housed or work for them and how many US citizens can be housed or work for them. The same thing happened to my son's and friends of mine when they were trying to get jobs. The apartments and jobs issue has been even more recent then 15 years ago.

I have ancestors on both sides of this issue. I don't know what tribe my ancestors are but I know they were in Illinois. Some of my ancestors came over on the Mayflower. The American Indian is not the first people to be displaced. People being displaced is a part of history all over the world. Alexander the great did it so did the mongles with Genghis Khan in china and Russia. The Romans did it and it also happened in Africa as well as in South America. When one group of people become strong they want to expand, so another group are pushed of their land. The American Indian did it to each other too.
Leonard Peltier was wanted in Wisconsin on charges of assault and attempted murder of a police office When he went to Pine Ridge to fight Richard Wilson and his goons. There were over 60 unsolved murders at Pine Ridge at that time.
Why arent you allowed to feed the squirrels. Are they becoming a nuisance to your neighbors? As for the deer if they are not culled then they can eat the vegetation down and end up starving and becoming ill. Who is telling you that you don't belong there and what language are they telling you have to learn? The last I knew this was The United States and our language was English. The civil rights movement was all about living in the neighbor hood of your choice. Has that changed and I was sleeping at that time?

I do not live in China or Russia. That is not what I am speaking of.There are apartment complexes and businesses that are hiring saying that they have quotas about how many foreign people and US citizens they can hire.Plus they can be sued for discrimination if they hire or rent to a "white" person.About 15 years ago I trained and applied for a job with the county government and because I did not speak spanish I was told I was not qualified for the job.
