Dyeing disasters

A while ago I bought a hair dye just on a whim. It was deep purple in colour and I was looking forward to trying it out. My friend came around later that day and helped me to do it. As my hair was rinsed out there didn't appear to be a huge difference as my hair is dark brown naturally anyway and it was wet, making it look even darker. The next morning I woke up excited to see what my dried, newly purple dyed hair looked like and ........ it was red!!! Ok, well I didn't mind because I was kinda going for a bit of a shock colour but it most certainly wasn't purple. Have you ever had any disasters from dyeing your hair? Have you made a mess of someone elses hair? Have you ever given someone a bad trim?

I had a messy experience 6 months ago. It was my first time to dye my hair at home. Before I did it at hair salon but I felt it’s too expensive to dye my hair in the UK. I had very short hair so I thought it would be easy for me to do it by myself at home. So bought dye cream and started my dying. My husband also came to help me. However we both were new to it. At last he made his t-shirt dirty and got a color on it. I made the floor and wall dirty too. We paid time and extra money for washing his t-shirt. It’s totally not economical. At my second time I did it at bathroom then everything was fine.

i am slightly wary of experimenting on myself but i did use plain henna for conditioning my hair.since i had also taken a shower prior to applying henna(it is known to colour hair when used for a long time)i applied a little more than needed and it took some 2- 3 months for me to get my original colour back.

Hi there riyasam Someone once told me too that if you put lemon juice on your hair whilst out in the sun it will turn your hair blonde but I think you have to have fairly light hair in the first place! Thanks

Hi hummy, Once i went to the sears salon.. it was close to my house. and i was not thinking i guess.. After i told them what i wanted, they decided the best way was to use that cap thing.. my hair was fairly long. (i wanted purple around my hairline, so that when i put it up it looked purple, but was mostly natural colour when down) They asked me if i was taking and medications and i told them yes i was on antidepressents, and the main hairstylist there said taht was okay and went ahead and when home to let the new girl do my hair. well.. the mix of the colour and the medication turned my hair GREEN. not purple.. and it took much much longer then anticipated. Also when they goot the cap off.. my hair was So knotted and frizzy they ended up brushing a lot of my hair out. I will never go back there again.. they still tried to make me pay full price for that.. I shouldnt have paid them anything. but i only agree'd to pay for the colour that WORKED in my hair. only the cost of the product. JERKS!

I have a natural dark brown hair but sometimes but I really like to see others with a dark hair color of black, brown and also a light color like blond. Nothing beats the natural and I'll always opt for the natural flavor. I suppose just for fun and experimentation wise, a spray dye would do; which allows it to be washed off easily..that would be fun. You can try spray cans and there are arrays of colors from green to purple and whatnot..

Really? Wow.. then that might be bad.. unless the person can control to spray on ends only..

Hi ya zed_k4 That is a good idea but the problem with that is that you tend to colour your scalp too when you do that!! haha Thanks

I have had MANY hair disasters, but I think the worse was the summer I thought my hair was UNTOUCHABLE. First, I put highlights in it, then lightened them with Sun-In. It looked great, but I got bored with it after a couple of weeks and decided to go over the blonde with some crazy magenta color...which also looked good, but it faded quickly so I dyed it an even darker pinkish color... Then a few weeks later I got bored with that and decided I was going to bleach the entire top of my hair and color it bright purple, then add black and blonde extensions to the back so I could have a really crazy fashion mullet. It came out great, but it's not the kind of hairstyle that you can have every day, so I dyed black over it. Then, like a total idiot, I decided (2 weeks later) that it had been long enough to be safe to relax my hair. My hair ALL broke off and the entire bathtub was full of hair. I think I was left with an inch of hair all over! It was horrible, but totally my fault.

Well, I remember my dyeing disaster. Just like you, I too was in the grip of hair colours and since my hair is half grey from the time I care to remember, dyeing was nothing new to me. the usual colours I selected where either black, or deep brown or raven…even burgundy looked nice with my wheatish complexion. Anyways, once I decided to try out the light brown hue…suffices to say that my entire family was shocked, I could not walk on the streets without people boring into me and in general l looked like walking around with a halo around my head!

can't say that I've had any disasters, worst thing was with one brand of hair color where I didn't test it for the allergy thing and I had a mild reaction, and the second worst was when I just did a lousy job doing my roots... Dang, purple turns you red? Guess I won't try it then. lolq

Oh my, well not yet, and hopfully I wont, but I've been thinking about dyeing my hair for a while but I haven't taken the plunge yet, probably coz I haven't decided what color I want to try yet. I've thought of trying just some blue streaks or light brown streaks coz my hair is naturally an off black color, though hope that I don't have a dyeing disaster lol.

Hi ya apples99 It is hard to dye your hair when it is dark like mine and yours but I am sure if you have it done properly at the hair dressers they can do it for you and they will also be able to advise you. Thanks

Over a year ago I dyed my hair. I picked out a dark ash blond because I was trying to go back to my natural color. It turned my hair green. I had to go to a salon and have it fixed. So much for trying to save some money. I had to wait until the weekend to get it fixed because I had to work. Luckily only part of it was green. I would just put my hair up. I'm not sure if anyone noticed or not. Nobody said anything. Several years ago my husband and I moved to a new town. I had to find a new hair dresser. I found one close to where I was living. I wanted a perm. I explained to the stylist I want a very relaxed curl. Almost no curl at all. I also showed her a picture. At the end I looked like a french poodle. I was so angry and upset. I asked to see the supervisor and refused to pay for the perm. I never went back there again. The stylist had been a stylist for many many years so it wasn't that she was still learning. I am very careful what products I use on my hair now. I don't dye it anymore. I am very picky about hair dressers. I ask around to see who is good instead of picking one out of the phone book that is closest to my house.

Hiya bmuchler What I usually do is go by word of mouth or if the salon is really booked up then you know they are popular. I think I have tried almost every salon in my town by now and am finding it hard to choose one that is reasonable on price and cuts well!! Thanks

Hello there. You really had quite an experience there on dyeing your hair. I have no experience in dyeing hair and I have been thinking of dyeing my hair. I wnat to try out different looks using different color for my hair. I have a friend who have tried out to color and highlight his own hair and it was done in a proper manner he followed every instruction in the box and every was well done. I know that you too have read the instruction, but maybe there was a mix up with the color that you have bought and just did not notice. At least your hair is still great and does not look awful.

Hi there marctiu Yes I did think that maybe there was a mix up with bottles in the box, maybe a shopper in the store did it, I have no idea. Thanks

I once dyed my hair a lovely shade of pink. Not the whole head, but just part of it, to give it a shocking look as you say. it did cover the gray rather well! But, after a few days, it turned into some sort of ugly orange color and I couldn't get rid of it. I ended up dying my hair completely brown just to remove the orangish color. I haven't colored my hair anything other than my natural brown since then

I have dyed my hair countless times since I became a teenager. I tried various colours, the favourite of which was probably the midnight blue - it was really really dark black, i.e it was so black it was blue! I did dye a friend's hair once, I remember I was trying to make it blond using hair bleach, but it ended up being a really horrid orange colour. I am just glad that we both saw the funny side of it!

Hi ya UK_Shree Yes it seems strange how that does that to some people's hair and with others it has a greeny tinge to! Thanks

Hi Humbug, I was blond and had some highlights put in, huge mistake, because then you get roots which need to be done again. So that turned into dyes as presumed by then as the roots were darker it must be going mousey. And once you start you're stuck with it. Then a few years back I bought a wrong packet and part of my hair went blue and my lovely hairdresser got it back to normal. But at that point I decided not to bother anymore, I hated doing it anyway and if it turned out I was mouse so be it. And once all the crap dye grew out can you guess what colour I actually was underneath after all those years. Blond. And a nicer blond than the dyed blond. So I'm staying natural in future.

Well, id have to say that read was better than orange. That was my hair disaster. I was trying to dye my hair a light color like blonde and I had my husband help me out and everything. Well, yep you guessed it instead of my hair turning blondish or at least a lighter brown, my hair turned orange. I think I must have have left it in there too long. Long story short, well it took forever before the color started fading away a little bit and actually started going to the color that I wanted and that was one thing I was happy about. Cause walking around with orange hair was so embarrassing.

Hi ya trisha27 I guess you could have dyed it another colour ontop but you don't know what sort of damage you might be doing and if it is going to turn out even worse. Mind you I guess it couldn't have got much worse haha Thanks
