They are call freecycle and we have them here in the States. Go to freecycle.com and sign up.
What they do....many things are taken to recycle areas everyday. They add up. Save the land fields and give away what you do not want to someone that can use it.
Or ask for something that you need and someone that has it will give it to you.
A couple of the rules... you must pick up or arrange to pick up wanted items.
Don't ask for things to resale on any site like ebay or anything of the sort.
These sites are for people not wanting to just throw things away in the land fields and can help someone else that needs the item or items.
I am signed up at two of them, one in Manchester Tn. and the other in Tullahoma/Winchester, Tn.
Would you join one of these? If you had something that someone else needed would you give it away?
I am in two sites and yes I would give things to people that need them.
Thank you for responses in advance.

I haven't heard of this program/facility. But I have taken things that are still usable to Goodwill, and have donated to the Salvation Army before. My city actually has curbside recycling for regular garbage. All we have to do is separate or cans, glass, and paper into special bags and put them into a different garbage can that the city provided. I think they have made it pretty easy for us to recycle.

Yes, recycling has been made easy by the city. Giving to the other places of things you don't want or can not use...well I have found that these places charge just about the same prices as Wal-Mart and other stores. Some people just can not afford these prices. The economy has made it hard to go to the grocery store much less getting things that we need besides food.
Try looking it up there and giving things to people that need them. Your life will be blessed in so many ways.

Hi.moondancer
I joined a freecycle site in Cullman,Alabama..It is a good site that helps people who can not afford to buy things they need or for people to help other people out and it helps keep things out of landfills..You can give things or you can ask for things that you need..It is a very good site if people do not abuse it..I would advise everyone to look into the site..

I would advise it as well. You are the one that told me about them. I have signed up with two groups.

Yes we have a freecycle for my area however that area is huge and the amount of people in it small. So many times when someone lists something there they are too far for me to take advantage of the give away. Also when I have lists things on it, it usually takes a while for the moderators to post it and by that time I have found someone to take it from sites like kijiji which is way more popular and more people look at it here then freecycle.

At least you are taking advantage of something that helps people get what they need and vise-versa. I totally believe in helping people and giving what you don't need to others.
I must check out kijiji. Thanks for the site.

I belong to a site like that here. Barely use it though anymore as where I'm living pick ups and deliveries is unavailable. Our little town has it's own
dumpsite and we keep it pretty 'clean' as everything goes into a pit, and we just sit back and wait for the lightening to strike and burn it all up. lol Works like a charm.

LOL, in your little town I'm sure it's a lot like mine. Really small and most people if not all know each other and when someone has something to give away they find someone to give it to.
What's left does make for a good time watching it burn though. lol

Yep, that's about how it works.
Last year it caught fire on Halloween. We made a party out of it and roasted marshmallows! LOL

Hey there moondancer
I am a huge fan of freecycle. It is a great way to pick up some great items for nothing and to also declutter your own living area. It is great that it keeps these things out of landfills where they would have ended up if not taken by someone who needed these items. I once got a car from my local freecycle site haha

A car would be a generous gift indeed. I know a couple of people that could take advantage of that gift, lol. I have a truck but it needs some work on it that I can not afford. I have the parts but service costs so much.

It was really beat up but it lasted the two months I needed for until I got myself another car. It would have cost me more than the car's worth to get it through its MoT (a road worthy test that you have to have in the UK to keep your car on the road), but I did appreciate it non the less!

There is. Every week end, we will drive there and place all our things in the various bins. We think the bins are very useful for people to throw away things they do not need. Believe me, I saw a man sending almost his entire wardrobe into a bin. He must have changed all his clothing for new fashions and styles, I assume. We normally discard magazines and newspapers we no longer need. Yes, and all T-shirts. My brother discard even his VCDs and DVDs here.

Wow, that's wonderful. One bin and people just get what they need or put into it what they don't need. I wish we had something like that here.
I know at the place where we take our garbage to the man will set some things at the end of the huge box that trash goes into and if anyone wants what is there they can just get it. Most things are not really worth having though.
We really have no place to put nice things that someone could have. So the websites that allow us to post for free works well for that.

Yes I am a member of seveal freecycle groups on my area. I do give things away. I plan on giving more stuff away in the next up coming weeks. As I plan to move out of state with my two younger children. While my 18 yr old teen and husband stay behind because of the economy. Long story for another. I am in several freecycles because of where I live. I live in a town that you blink your eye you will miss it. No stop light but we do have a school and a church. Thats it. The town is in the middle of much larger cities.

I live in a rural area, and the only 3 cities that are near me are the ones I mentioned. I have to go around 30 minutes to get the any of them, except Manchester which is about 20 minutes.
That's not bad at all. The same for others to get things that I want to give away.
These places are great to have.
Good luck in your move.
