Broke the 10 Minute Mile!

I know, some people easily run 7 or 8 minute miles, but for me... this is an accomplishment. Even in high school I would be the one out there running the 12 minute mile. And now I'm usually running a 10:30. But last night I ran a 9:57 mile.
I tried to do another one after a one lap walk for rest, but only got a 10:05 the next time.
I'm hoping that by the 5K I can bust out a speed that is just under the 10 minute mile.

Thanks! I just keep on trying and keep getting more and more addicted!
Right now I'm still taking it pretty easy most of the time. My ankles killed me after that fast workout. But then they seem better in my ultra stable walking shoes. But still I don't want to risk hurting them so that I can't run the 5K at all. So I'm still down to only 2 runs per week. Although a lot of people in my running group do minimal miles programs with great success so they didn't have a big problem with my decrease. Just as long as you don't stop completely apparently it's still good.

I found another book you should read. It is Marathoning For Mortals by John " The Penguin" Bingham and coach Jenny Hadfield MA. C.P.T.

Oh nice, I've heard of that one before.
I just ordered one book because it has a big chapter on preventing injuries. Apparently, I need that chapter.
Now my ankles are less swollen, but my metatarsals on my right foot are hurting. But that isn't from running (well, not entirely)... it seems to be mostly aggravated by my evil office dress shoes. So I'm trying my best to mostly be barefoot in the office when people aren't looking.

Cngrats on the 10 minute mile!!
Way to go!! I know what an accomplishment that is. I was close when I was in New Orleans where there were no hills!! Keep up the good work and you'll do fine on the 5K!!

My next race should have no hills at all as far as I know. The first race I did had some slight hills/inclines. So I'm crossing my fingers that I can beat my last time.
Right now the main thing is just making sure my ankles don't sustain further damage and hopefully repair a bit more as well. I'm going on a trail run this weekend, but I think the new shoes I got for trail running should help so that the run doesn't injure my ankles. It is so annoying being slightly injured! I just want to be 100% again.

My ankles are swollen slightly right now so all I did was swim today. Ugh, I'm hoping they'll be good for that trail run! I have wanted to run that trail for awhile but there are different branches of it and I never get invited. I got invited for the shortest branch, the 5 mile. And normally I could so do that. But with my ankles I am worrying now. I don't want to mess them up for the race. So the swelling must be down by Saturday or I guess I'm stuck not running the trail.
Despite all my constant injuries (well, it seems like it to me anyway), one of my friends now wants to run a Halloween 5K with me. She asked me if I would run it awhile ago and I told her I might. Then she asked again tonight and I told her probably not just because I didn't know anyone else who was going. And so she asked if I would mind horribly if we did it together. She was hoping we'd actually stay together, but the problem is that our paces are just too different. So I told her it wouldn't be that long that we'd end up being separated and then we could enjoy all the after festivities together. She's just hoping to finish, even if it takes over an hour. I know she'll finish. :)

Yeap, that slighly injured thing is really a pain. I have a place on my leg that causes me to slow down some. I tried running just below the pain but it is so annoying! Good luck on your trail run, I hope to try that one day too!

I am very impressed. I was proud when I could walk a mile in twelve minutes, but that has been a long time ago. I feel lucky if I can go a mile at all. I hope with all this various training you meet all of your goals and have an absolutely wonderful day.

That is really good for walking. I was practically dying on the 12 minute mile in high school.
I can walk forever it seems like, uphill or downhill, it doesn't bother me. But running has taken awhile for my body to get used to. I swear people who knew me in school would just laugh like crazy to see that I'm running for fun now. Because I used to do everything I could to not run in school!

this is great. I also just recently broke the 10 minute mile barrier.
I sure hope your ankle situation gets worked out. I don't know what I would do in the same situation. I probably wouldn't run and I can't imagine not running because I love it so. Though I haven't run now for 3 days due to my own laziness.

That is awesome! Congrats to you too then!
I always thought I wouldn't want to run injured. But then, I never want to stop. However, since I have that 5K in a little over a week, I am freaking out. So this is my plan... I'm not running anymore this week. I will substitute it with bicycling. Which is still good since I have a marathon bike tour coming up too. Then next week I will skip my hard workout on Tuesday and instead practice the 5K course with the group on Wednesday. Apparently we are also warming up together before the race on Saturday. And I'm hoping we aren't doing too much of a warm up because otherwise that will slow me down. After a short time going fast my ankles start to hurt and I am hoping I can at least make it to the halfway mark nearly pain free. I'm not sure I can run 3 fast miles in constant pain. Not without a mountain lion chasing me at least!
Oh, and I'm going to try ankle braces because some guy in the group had the same problem like I'm having and he always wears them and they help. But I think once my ankles are better I would mostly not run with those since I want to strengthen my ankles again. I plan to strengthen them largely by wearing my VFFs to do errands and such. Walking in them would probably help strengthen my feet and then maybe someday I will be daring enough to run in them again. Someday long after my feet are all happy again!

I would love to be able to do 10 miles. Currently I'm building up so that I'll be able to do 10K (6.2 miles). I'm going to run a Turkey Trot for a food bank!
I am too lazy to walk, but I love running because I really feel like I'm getting exercise. But walking that much has to be good too!
